Page One @ Vivo is running a closing down sale  :'(. Every book at 50% off and non-book stuff at 30%off. I am inside now walking around, reminiscencing e spots where me and my wife had our wedding photos taken. Seeing all e books strewn all over e shelves made me really heavy laden. I am walking out without any books, with a heavy heart and a prayer of thanks for all e beautiful memories.

... of course e PA announcement that says that queuing time to reach e cash registers will take an average of 2hrs scared me out of e place too.

I had no idea that there are so many readers in Singapore... they sure look like vultures mincing on e last bit of flesh on Page One's bones. Another one bites the dust  :'(. So long Page One

Kino.... hang in there. You are e only bookstore holding e flag now. Don't u give up on me

B&M shops have to reinvent themselves in some way otherwise they will go in the way of the dodo. I collect books but have not bought anything locally for a very long time, the first reason being that local shops don't carry what I collect and secondly the mark up is a lot higher than what I can get online even after shipping. The internet has changed the way we shop and in the case of Borders they were so slow to jump on the online element that it's laughable. Throw in ebooks and the competition becomes even more steep. I really hope Kino can stay afloat, I used to go once every week.

I remember some albums when on sale can be about $15.95 when regular CDs were about $22. For a poor student it was a godsend. heh

Bro, can share where do u shop online for books?

I agree with what u said but still I love visiting B&M CD and book shops. Nothing beats that personal touch. I remember some time ago I was in Kino asking a salesgirl abt a graphic novel. She told me it is not available yet. A week later, she saw me browsing and walked up to me with a big smile and e comic I asked abt a week ago!  I was damn impressed... and I am not even good looking haha. In e old days I frequent Saint book store at Bras Basah Complex and e owner will know my reading taste and proceed to recommend stuff. The online stores are great but it just don't have that personal touch.

The usual suspects are amazon, buy.com.
If you don't mind used books I like to use used.addall.com for US sites. UK sites www.bookfinder.com is pretty ok. For OOP books I usually use ebay, I use up my full quota of 100 saved searches on ebay.  :P I'm not in a hurry when looking for OOP books so will let ebay do the work for me and strike when price is right.
Unless you have a keen interest in WWII books I won't be sharing the specialist book stores that I use.  ;D

Is there gonna be a jerome procedure for book reading? ;)

I don't know any Jerome procedure for book reading but I know the Harry Burns procedure - when u pick up a new book, read e last few pages before reading from page one. That way if u passed on, u will at least know how e book ends  ;D

It actually works the same way, and since books go much further back in time compared to digital media there are way more OOP stuff out there.

If you've watched HBO's 'The Pacific', you might have known that one of the books it was based on was Eugene Sledge's 'With the Old Breed', there are 4 hardcover editions out there. One from Presidio Press, Naval Institute Press, Easton Press and a book club edition. Prices have shot up and I'm happy to say I have 3/4 of those.  ;D The paperback ones are still in print but it's the hardcover OOPs editions that are worth collecting. My wife absolutely hates the fact that I have multiple editions of the same book.  :P

More mainstream stuff, the LOTR first edition, first printings commands quite some money. Same goes for the Harry Potter books, even more if they are signed obviously.

The hardest books to find are privately published ones, since numbers are very limited.

Thanks bro for that illuminating sharing  ;). I had no idea that there's this other world out there. How do u maintain e condition of ur books?  Our weather and humidity will always cause e pages to yellow after a few years. I am seeing in my mind a temperature controlled vault at ur place... tell me I am wrong  ;D

It's really nice to know there are literature lovers here but i must say u r on e other end of e spectrum.  Do u watch movies?  U have to watched this...

... an exquisite film abt love and e love for books. I was so enchanted by e film that I read e book too. But I was a poor student at that time so each day after school I will visit bookstores to read it. Didn't take me long to finish - 3 visits only. Then some years later I went London and made a special trip to Charing Cross Rd and at that time e street is a book lover's paradise, filled with so many quaint book stores selling every book u can think of. I brought back a hardcover edition of Roald Dahl collected short stories, 40 of em!! Cost me £15 and till this day I still love looking at it and it always warms my heart. I have not read it but have read all e stories in other editions.

I try to control the humidity level in my room, temperature control is way too costly. Most hardcovers are printed on acid free books (paper is very white/bleached) and they don't yellow so easily, the mass market paperbacks however are not printed on acid free paper and hence yellows very easily in our climate.

Unfortunately, I do not have as much time as I would like to watch movies due to work and other commitments though we try to catch at least one show at home on the weekends. I will try to get hold of the movie you have introduced and give it a go. I like visiting the bookshops in London and generally in the UK, usually quaint little shops rather than the big chain stores that I am accustomed to. Last year in Q1 I was in the UK and bought like 50-60 books, had a hard time smuggling them back and had to arrange for the couriers to send them when the missus wasn't around.
