Essential Phone

If this new kid on the block keeps dropping its price and improves on the features and camera performance, it’s a good buy at US$499!! :D

Agreed...I actually preferred this design over the iPhone X notch. The only concern with Essentials at this point is that it is a small start-up in spite of the fact the Father of Android himself is helming the team. I'm afraid there is only so much the team can do at this point. But I have to admit that the drastic drop in price will definitely make it a very attractive propositions for those who wanted to have a near bezel-less phablet.

Competing with the new OP5T which is debuting in a week or so at this price point is going to be tough!  OP has a long fan base and 5T looks nice and a proven product!

Hoping the price will drop again so that I can pick it up and port the Google Camera HDR+ over to turn the camera into something close to the top tiers! ;D

It's a pity, another potential upstart going to bite the dust in view of the onslaught of cheap and good Chinese phones flooding the market! :P

Barely 3 years. It's quite a shock! Initially there is a possibility of an Essential Phone 2.0. But now no more in development.

Are you ready for the Essential Phone 2?  Prepare for a radical design that looks like your HT remote ;D
https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/10/09/andy-rubin-shows-off-new-essential-phone-with-a-unique-design/

https://phandroid.com/2019/10/08/essential-teases-strange-new-device-called-project-gem/

The design seems to be inspired by a High end remote controller we found on some TV, AVR and Blu-ray player. LoL.

For this type of design, one of the best use case is definitely for loading a universal remote controller android app with less swiping to the next page to access some of the device features.

This is like a remote controller doubling up as a handset that makes and receive calls as well.

This seems like another “foldable” phone design based on the rear design concept else how do we hit such an elongated handset into our pocket?

Looking at the photos, there is no grease line at the center of the phone so clearly this is a fixed screen hi-end Remote phone for Audio/Videophiles and Androidphiles ;D

If they have a IR Blaster in the specs, this will be it :)

Yeah you are right...upon closer inspection (earlier using a phone to see), there is no crease line so unlikely to be a foldable phone. I really wonder what kind of OS is in this "new" Essential Phone 2. Radical design aside...there are many things to consider - for starter, Android app scaling to fit such a "narrow" screen aspect ratio...Till this date, Android still can't nail it on the app scaling to fit most tablet form let alone this weird aspect ratio and secondly, how is viewing video from Youtube and Netflix going to look like on this weird aspect ratio? I can't think of anything "bright" from the design and use point of view. It may scream "unique" but practicality in terms of daily usage and getting some work done is a whole new thing altogether.

BUT I still hope there is something good from this design (apart from being the most colorful universal remote controller with telephony features). I wish the "father of Android" all the best with this new iteration of Essential Phone. :)
