Removing Metallic Paint From A Handrail
« on: December 02, 2018, 22:04 »
I'm no handyman, so any help from pros will be very much appreciated:

Currently there's a sturdy staircase rail, which is made from wood and the railing is metallic. It is in good shape, except that the previous owner decided to save and painted it with the same paint as the metal rails. So the wood grain is gone but more importantly it's grey in color!

Is there any way I can restore it, and make it or paint it to look wooden. Ideally, it should have some wood grain, but I fear the acrylic / metallic paint has done the damage ?

Use paint remover follow sand it smooth apply wood stain or "si leak"
If the wood have damages use wood filler to repair and sand it smooth.

Normally contractor will recommend new replacement rather restore unless conservation houses no other alternative then LL restore.

Not to forget that paint-stripper/remover is extremely hazardous to health. You can save on contractor fees now, but have to pay doctors later. Not worth it bro.
Cable termination and repair services for a reasonable fee. Whatsapp Larry at 98805223.

Thanks bros for the concern.
I won't do something fierce and save pennies only to harm myself.. I am a noobie, but I want to know something before my contractor comes and does it, so I know what is he doing..
It's a pity that the previous owner decided to use metallic paint, so all grain on the wooden rail is lost.
Let's see how it looks after the job is done.
Cheers :)

Okay, just like Octave had mentioned. The contractor will have to remove most of the paint first, then sand down to bare wood. Fill-up or patch-up any crack or hole with wood putty, and finally apply layers after layers of varnish until the desire finish is achieved.

It is tedious work indeed.

Seems like the paint can only be covered with some other gloss wood / metal paint.. no chance of silac..
So I have to limit myself to the ICI acrylic paints or some paint suitable for metal and wood, instead of a varnish.
Pity... no more wood grain
