VPN service - recommendations?
« on: October 21, 2010, 16:26 »
I know this has been discussed in a few threads about iPads and stuff, but the search button wasn't very friendly and didn't throw up the threads I was looking for  :'(

So can anyone recommend me a reliable VPN service? I recall there was one that offers you a choice of gateways in three different countries. Also, the service must work with Macs, iPads, and other Apple devices.

OK, I found the one I remembered being mentioned here - StrongVPN.

Any others? And does the PPTP option work in Singapore, or do I need to sign up for the more expensive Open plan?

the PPTP option works in Singapore and i was advised by the CS that since we are located in SG, the best option for us would be the 4 cities plan which is currently on a yearly promo.

Yup I signed up this evening too :) if it wasn't for the EPL matches tonight, I'd still be surfing VEVO right now :p

So did you guys get the Open or PPTP only $85/55 USD plans?

Are you using on your machines PC/MAC? or Router DD-WRT loaded?
I have a pile of stuff that pushes out squiggly waveforms from smaller squiggly waveforms that sometimes come from 1's and 0's.

i got the PPTP/ USD55 per year package. i'm currently using it on my iMac. I'm using Time Capsule so I don't think the DD-WRT thing will work for me.

Im thinking to put a 2nd ethernet (via USB apple ethernet adapter for macbook air) on my macmini server and use it instead of my time capsule to access the net and use the VPN in that... maybe pptp is good enough rather than go get a DD-WRT capable router but that maybe a better option.

say you want to access http://www.pandora.com or http://www.hulu.com/ then this type of sevice allows there site to think you are in the USA or UK ... thus allowing you to use their services...

It also alows for anonymous surfing too :D

Im just trying to get the best plan, but I think it looks like the $55 4 cities PPTP for now

Hmm... Since the pricing is the same, won't the 3 countries for $55 (is that USD or SGD?) PPTP plan be the best plan? No?

Still don't quite understand what that means but seems OpenVPN has better encryption and can do both Open and PPTP at the same time... Hmmm... I am thinking about this... really like to access Hulu and other sites for viewing of the series... and getting something done with the credit I got from Amazon... wasted 2 credits of downloads, because I don't have US IP address.

before you sign up, you can chat with the CS online to ask about which plan suits you best, based on where you are physically located. they will recommend a plan with servers which are closest to you to maximize your access. that was how i ended up with the 4 cities plan which costs USD55 per year.

I wanted Hong Kong as it is near to U115 where I download most of my music :)
