Miniwatt S1
« on: February 10, 2010, 09:18 »
Heard some great comments about the above, which is going for below $400. Anyone tried them? Interested to find how they sound compared to other mini amps like Dared etc. Some reviews from their site:

Please ... ... 2.5 watt is not enough to drive your Harbeth.

Please.   ;D

1. I have other spks besides Harbeth
2. I didnt say I wanna buy it for myself
3. Have u tried em with Harbeth to come to this conclusion?
4. Besides the sensitivity of your speakers, can drive or not depends too on how
loud u play, the kind of music u play and the size of yr listening room

So Quest, u heard it with the Omegas?

Its NOT ORIGINAL, but a Homage, SOLD to you as BETTER, and at a BETTER PRICE

And even a DECLARATION, mind, you DECLARED ONLY as different,

Note: There is an “APPJ” branded tube amp being sold in the market, but not by authorised MiniWatt dealers. It may look like the MiniWatt S1, but is not the same. For more information from the manufacturer (people who bought then rebadge and then become manufacturer)please click here:

OTHERWISE THE SAME right down to the last screw, a la Goldmund Pioneer remote, a la MHZS, remove the Miniwatt sticker, you'll see!

"The HK company you dealt with bought this amp from APPJ, renamed it and sent it to you for review."

well ddtrr, maybe u are right.. it was an interesting read, assuming all facts are correct. :)
but at least it isn't a goldmund price jump.

i noted that the price difference was just S$30 vs the resellers/dealers in singapore for the two brands at the time of my post previously (not sure if things have changed since).. it was small enough a disparity that i'd be willing to pay for the opportunity to audition it properly and be given service and warranty.

of course if u can get a hold of the appj directly from china at a substantial discount, story might be abit different.

U know, this is SG, where there are tonnes of people who buy cheap things and resell at higher prices. Where audio is expensive.

I mentioned in the other forum also, the price of the APPJ is only 698RMB, this is the price from the manufacturor's taobao store.

The so called clone even garnered a 6moons review albeit cancelled  ;D

set the record straight. Hong Kong-based MiniWatt really only distributed and rebadged that marvelous little amp

Can you tell me which business in the world does not buy stuff at distributor/OEM prices (= cheap) and re-sell to you for a profit ?
Even the hawkers do that, eg the mama store buy their canned drinks cheap and sell to you for >=100% profit, but people still buy. right ?  ;)
Note that as a rule of thumb for any biz to survive (paying fixed overheads etc), you need at least 30% profit from all the stuff you sell,
otherwise it's better to work for others  ;D

You're misunderstanding... these people are mostly not businesses that buy at cheaper prices, but individuals that buy at the same price as consumers and sell it even higher to the clueless. Overheads? Forum admins are already very nice to let them flip for zero cost.

Harbeth need power to play properly mah

You listen your music loud and those kpkb rock kind cannot make do with 2.5 watt.

maybe i am overly skeptical when there are conflicting views. APPJ will want to leverage off the good press the miniwatt has gained, and miniwatt would want to distance themselves from APPJ. :)
the problem is that none of the facts are verified and 6moons basically used a string of email from another party to make a conclusion
i personally feel it was not so tough for 6moons to have gotten 2 of the units to confirm if it is indeed the exact same product, rather than relying on those emails.

and this after 6moons themselves (albeit different reviewer) did a good review + also saw the innards of the miniwatt.
http://sixmoons.com/audioreviews/miniwatt/miniwatt.html

googled around and found some internals of the APPJ.
