Marantz Owner's thread - stereo products only
« on: August 27, 2009, 00:33 »
This is a thread for fellow owners and potential owners to share their info, tips and experiences.

There is a HT thread over at the planet HT, so post there for your questions on the AV components.

In SG, Marantz products have always been cheap, and this gives them the edge and attracts a lot of cost conscious buyers.

So lets share our tips and prices too!

Cheers

This costs around 6xx.

Some opinions on it in XP:

I think the SA8003 is slightly warmer, slightly less detailed than the Benchmark for normal CD. I have found virtually no differences between the SA8003 as a transport and the Duet streaming Apple Lossless. Those who notice a big difference often compare the Duet to a 5k transport  like an Esoteric. Which is too rich for my blood anyway.

As I maintain before, CD playback has pretty much plateau-ed. If you are getting the SA8003, make sure you start building up your SACD collection  because THAT makes the biggest differences.

If the mods improve the SACD significantly, I may consider them

The 15S2 didn't even have balanced outputs so I think the huge incremental increase is not worth it. But the 11S2 is even pricier. I read elsewhere that HK has the XA5400ES in stock. May be worth checking out if you know anyone there.

I picked up a 2nd hand SA-15S1 from a fellow forumer who is also using the Almarro 318B sometime back. What can i say, i am loving every moment of it.

Before making the decision, was trying to find reviews on it and how it compares. Sharing some links here:

I have also found some comments on some forums that the SA 8001 is actually a better CDP than the current SA 8003.

I think if you get the plain vanilla SA 8003, you may wish to consider tweaking it, but give it a spin anyway.

I hated the remote on my 7001 Ki S which is what you refer to as the 8001.

The added USB port and mp3 features are useful bonuses.

Edit: As for the PM 11, try asking Seeket at Seng Heng, or Anson Audio for the price, not many will have that here.

Cheers

Recently I had the opportunity to compare PM-15S1 and PM-8003 with my old EMA-modded PM-6100SA, using the same CDP (SA-15S2), I/C (Chord Chorus 2) and speakers (B&W 805s) in Adelphi.

Somewhat to my surprise, the premium model did not perform to my expectation. My preference is as follows:

PM-6100SA > PM-8003 >> PM-15S1

As usual, YMMV..  :P

Re: Marantz is warm?
Many companies try and project themselves in a certain way, and Marantz has always had this "music first" or "music matters" kind of theme, and many buyers consider the sonic signature to be warm.

Hence they have been a natural partner for more treble happy equipment, such as Monitor Audio, but IMO, it is imperative to listen to the equipment, and make sure it suits you. MA is also popular simply due to their VFM stance.

Partnering well is essential. Auditioning is equally important. Simply slapping together a bunch of award winning gear can result in a pretty awful sound.

Other brands which may work well that I have tried will be B/W (more neutral), Mission, JM Lab, PSB (tends to be treble happy too esp for their aluminium tweeters), JBL control 1, Ushers and SVS (SBS series).

I might be tempted to buy the SA-11S2. Where can I find the cheapest brand new set? KEC? ;D

As mentioned before....

KEC is no longer going for the cheap cheap model. They are aiming for "value" and service. Their prices can be matched by other shops easily.

So it will do buyers good to establish good relationships with some of the other shops too.

After you have got the price do post it too.

Junchoon is looking for the same item.
