Hi-End Goldmund is a Pioneer DVD player?
« on: April 08, 2008, 06:23 »
Heard some rumours about an expensive Goldmund player is actually a pioneer DVD player with some mods added but sells for over $15K.

Is it true?

If so, has anyone bought this Pioneer player to see if it is really that good? (So good that Goldmund had to use some parts from it).

Thanks

I have a Pioneer player, been working flawlessly (touch a lot of wood) for 5 years now. Still have it. sounds great. No Goldmund to compare though.

Have you been to Google?

or Goldmnund.com?

Yes. Heard rumours but the pictures not too clear. Goldmund reportedly used a Pioneer machine and hop it up to a 15 k player. But the hop up seems minimum to me ... anyone knows more?

Power transformer and metal plate over the transport mechanism are the obvious differences. not sure how much of the electronics they can fiddle with given that everything is on a PCB...

Unless you buy that Goldmund and Pioneer and start "disecting" each of them and comparing the sound against each other, the only thing that we know are from what we read in the internet.

In addition to the 2 pics above, they also modded the remote ;D
U'll get a Goldmund-badged remote :P

actually so what if it is true?

not surprising mah.... OEM manufacture it and the company xyz can just do some mod and slap a company logo on the product....
its the power of marketing and branding at work here... as long as they can brand it and sell it for $15k. its successful...

Actually I have heard the Goldmund before. But I did not do a blind test with the original Pioneer.

The owner had a very exotic setup and the system sounded pretty impressive. He did not know the innards of the player was a Pioneer and I did not want to make him feel bad.

He paid about 6k S$ for it and felt it was good value. My conclusion isn't that the Goldmund sounds good or bad, but their marketing is superb and there are people who believe that price is a good judge of quality. Plus the fact that I will treasure my Pioneer gear at home even more now...
Please post instead of sending a pm, so more can learn.
