A real good test would be to do a blind test for 983, 981, 980 and an acceptable DVD player like Pioneer's DV-600AV-S.
Then we'll know how good it really is.

i don't have an HDMI-equipped TV (yet).
if i connect by HDMI to my denon 2807, can i still get audio output for SACD/DVD-A? or will the HDMI/HDCP handshaking switch off the HDMI unless my amp's HDMI-out is connected to an HDCP-compliant monitor?

Thanks, Df. But another stupid question - does it play VCDs?
Obviously, I hate them...but some of my toddler's kiddy shows are on VCD.

Has anybody compare the audio section with any latest 2k CDP player? Nuforce mentioned its comparable to a 3k CDP but I google all over and cannot find much comments on the audio section. I am looking considering to replace my 5 year old $2k CDP and I wonder how the audio section fare compare to a $2k Marantz CDP.
Can the 983 play ISO movie files besides avi files from a hd, like the DVICO.

I have compared it with a full modded Marantz 63SE which totally loses out in dynamics. Stereophile shoud have something about the audio section in May.

Dont have any ISO files to play, so far I have played avi and divx from my external HD.
You can ask the new owners and beta testers in
avsforum
on the ISO file.

joined the MO...this will be my first try with Oppo...will post my feedback when it arrives in April. particularly interested in the music capabilities. video not so important cuz (a) my TV doesn't even have HDMI so no upscaling and (b) i've basically switched to blu-ray anyway.
