Prog. Remote control & HTPC
« on: May 20, 2002, 13:50 »
HTPC users,

Is there an elegant method to control a HTPC using a programmable remote ?

Programmable remote eg, Pronto, Marantz MK2, yammy AV remote...etc

I'm not sure if there's a way to control a HTPC as elegantly as the way we control the DVDP. Eg Pause, press a botton on a small remote?

If there is, many of us here would like to know! TIA. :) :) :)

Of the HTPC setups I have seen, the owners end up having 2 sets of remotes; 1 RF remote for the pc itself, and another IR remote for the rest of the equipments.

I havent seen a remote controller that alone can control an entire htpc setup, as you will probably still need some  kind of remote mouse (or joystick) to control the cursor.

Speaking of remote controllers, I just got a Sony AV3000:

size compared to my "other" Sony remote:

and the thickness:

You can use the free Girder software + IR man infrared receiver. And along with any wireless remote control(programmable or not is OK), you can program the Girder software to activate your HTPC from your remote control. Any keys on your remote can be designated a specific control for your HTPC.
Those IRDA compliant infra recievers in Sim Lim cannot work. I have to buy the IR Man instead.

If you own one like saiful's remote control with so many built in IR codes from different brands ( i think) without using another remote control. You dont want to use the same codes to activate your HTPC and your equipment at the same time, do you?

Actually I just want my Philips Pronto to be the control centre for the entire setup, HTPC inclusive.....together with all other AV equipment I have.

The Sony RC is a nice piece of toy. How much did u pay for it?

My RC toy is the Philips Pronto940.

The remote is wedge shaped, starting at 2.5cm thick and 7.1cm wide at the bottom and tapering, over the 13.7cm length, to 3.8cm thick and 8.9cm wide at the top

I'm still looking for a device that can control a HTPC fully, but the last thing I need to to navigate with a mouse interface. IMHO, slow, clumsy and inconvenient to navigate a HTPC (essentially as a DVDP) on a mouse interface. Moving a mouse cursor is really not a good way

Conflicting codes is not a problem. I just download a set of unique IR codes from the PC solely for the HTPC.
SLS tend to sell IrDA transceivers, and thus imcompatible with 100% of the prog. RCs out there.

Check out this webby for a review of this bad boy.
