Can I connect stereo pre-amp & AVR to 1 sub
« on: September 13, 2020, 08:41 »
Hello everyone,

I have a 2/5.1 channel hybrid setup for my stereo & for HT listening. The current connection for the sub is LFE into the Yamaha RX-A1060 AVR.

I now want to setup my sub to function for 2.1 channel.  Can I connect from the CambridgeAudio CXNv2 Line Out to the Monitor Audio SW-12 RCA Line Level Inputs? (I have checked with CA tech, they do support this configuration, MA tech hasn’t gotten back to me yet)

From the diagram you can see the AVR is PRE-OUT to the CambridgeAudio 851W, so when I am in 2ch HIFi mode all DSP processing are cut off meaning it also cuts out the LFE, so the sub effectively is not working & is free to perform via the RCA.

Same thing when watching movies, as I learnt recently here that the 851W does not support dual concurrent inputs I have to remove the balanced cables from the CXNv2 & power it down which means no signal input via CXNv2 to the sub.

In summary only 1 device will power the sub at a time & are not setup to feed signal concurrently.

Will this work?

Hey bro, I'm also exploring possibilities / options for sharing of sub between HT and music duties for my godpa

I'm assuming your 2ch amp does not have HT bypass.

From what I understand, it seems like a rca switch will work in this case to share the sub duties. But your preamp or source player must have a sub preout for this to work. So the sub preout of the avr and also the 2ch amp/source, goes into this 2 to 1 rca switch. When u want to use either, just select the correct path

I assume either your 2 ch amp or source player has a sub preout?

Is your 2 ch amp used for HT duties as well? Or purely for music

How about using separate low and high level input of the sub?

AVR sub out -> sub rca-in
Stereo pre amp -> power amp speaker out -> sub speaker-in

Hi bro,

I think it’s working now as I can hear the sub in 2.1 :)

To answer ur qn, my 2 ch amp is basically a monoblock & my source player is also a preamp & has rca line outs as well as balanced xlr outs. So since the xlr are in the monoblock I used the rca line out to the sub.

If u see my attached pdf in the earlier post u will see that there is no rca out. Only rca in which is where the avr pre out connect to.

AVR sub out -> Sub LFE in (SW mono analogue RCA cable)
Music source & pre-amp -> RCA line out -> Sub Stereo RCA in (Stereo analogue RCA cables)

oic... I've looked at the rears of your source and 2ch amp. As there's no sub pre-out on both devices, i think the rca switch method is unlikely to work for you. But it could for my godpa as his oppo source has a sub pre-out. :) Sori that this method can't work for you.

His sub have stereo RCA in and LFE RCA in.  Thus can connect:

AVR sub out -> LFE RCA IN
Source stereo out -> stereo RCA in

Then adjust the low pass filter on the sub to blend with the main speakers.  The low pass filter will not affect the AVR sub out since that is only LFE.

Ah i see. That's great. Means no need RCA switch to switch. Sorry, I'm really unfamiliar with stereo setups. Could u help me understand how it works:

1) if the user needs to adjust the sub's volume, does this mean that he need to use the gain knob too of the sub unless the preamp/ source has sub channel controls?

2) does this mean that, the speakers will need to run full range in this case and not able to have a highpass xover?

I will adjust the sub volume (and low pass filter) to blend in with the main speakers for stereo listening.  Stereo nothing to set, the speaker will show what it can show, the sub will show what the speaker can't.

For LFE, adjust the AVR LFE channel level without touching the sub volume.  AVR settings still set speaker as small.

Bingo!! :)

& the LFE is controlled by the AVR which is default at 120Hz. For bass management for movies, I set my front floorstanders to Small at the THX recommended 80Hz.

For music, I tweak the LPF between 40-80 depending on the genre / song playing.

Nice, thanks. Glad it worked out for u :) I'm still trying to figure out my godpa's one lol.

So if you want to adjust the sub's volume for music, does this mean you have to turn the gain knob on your sub? Cos sometimes u need to balance the sub's volume with your mains for music.
