NUC vs. MAC Mini for Music Server/Streamer?
« on: July 26, 2020, 10:27 »
Mainly for music and light web browsing.

If NUC build, will use foobar2000 as main player I think.

Q1. Does foobar2000 run on Celeron CPU or minimum is Pentium?  Website say i686.

If MAC Mini, will most likely use iTunes as main player.

Q2. What alternative player to iTunes would you recommend- free, not paid?

Old Late 2012 MAC Mini cost 2x a NUC7C or NUC7P bare bones kit.  NUC6C no longer around else it has 4Core which should work fine.

I have SSD/IPS Momitor.  Just need to the purchase 2x 4GM RAM.  I do have Windows 10 Pro 64-bit + Office 365 License(s) too.  So either builds for a bit of Productivity work should work too.

I’m a foobar2000 user.

foobar2000 works fine on both 32bit & 64bit Windows.

If you don’t use cpu intensive DSP plugins, Celeron chip should work fine.

On the other hand if you use upsampling DSP and/or RoomEQ DSP, then a more powerful CPU is highly recommended.

Lots of RAM is also good, can configure foobar2000 to cache as much file content as possible into RAM.

Finally, if connecting to a USB DAC, try to use USB Audio 2.0 driver if it is supported by the DAC.

Hope this sharing helps...

Agree with Boxer. If no upsampling requirements, both are fine.

I find iTunes perfectly ok as a software.

Only difference between the two is personally I find Mac mini sounds better and can also be modified easier if you want to use it for a dedicated music player later on. NUC also comes with an external power supply which I dislike, but that can be a pro or con.
