My original title is more catchy/attention grabbing. I don't mind to change the title if everyone agrees that we are the ultimate disillusionists.

I agree.  The original title is fine.  It grabs attention.   The distraction from C19 is welcome.

No worries, I'm just suggesting...either way, this is a contentious topic which will sure to evoke some "exciting" arguments. I'm no audiophile though.

Those in the non-audiophile world will probably think that ppl who spend a few hundred bucks on cables are already mentally sick. ;D Having said that, I am sure those who do spend 5 figures amt on cables appreciate the improvement they heard. No, I dont have and cannot afford 5 figure cables
I buy hifi to suit my music, not buy music to suit my hifi.

The nature of audio products likely played a significant role - many brand choices, wide price range that continually tempts increasing wages/savings as the years go by, many items to buy - cables, preamp, power amp, power conditioner, speakers, etc. It's an endless shopping list.

With hifi, it's easy to fall trap into chasing any sound improvements, making numerous purchases - tighter bass, higher notes, lush midrange what not. In the assembly of a hifi system, likely more than one audio brand will be involved - different audio brands will have their own beliefs/perspectives on audio/engineering design & they have varied engineering abilities too. Also, room acoustics is one tricky consideration too. There are many unknowns, giving rise to a wide range of possibilities on how one's hifi system will sound. The credibility test of hifi is only through one sensory organ - hearing; any sound changes from any new item can only be heard with certainty in one's room. It's easy to arouse curiosity in people, getting people to have wild imaginations of how good an audio product will sound at home. All these easily set people up on a wild goose chase. There are many hurdles to cross before a quality timeless system can be assembled - much trial and error and critical contemplation needed.

Always good to have focus on musicality because this is what moves our souls and the reason why many first embarked on hifi. With musicality, one is more likely to listen to one's system more and focus less on upgrading.

Personally, I also find the ease of listening to music to be influential in how often one listens to his/her hifi system - I.e. playing/switching easily many genres/songs from a tablet/phone. The human soul is intuitive and fluid. This mode of song selection will be more likely to enable one to explore songs one has never heard before in his/her digital music collection and bring about pleasant surprises. If one has, example Tidal app on his/her hifi system, this allows one to seamlessly explore unexplored genres/songs that one never even knew one would enjoy - which fulfils the reason why we listen to music, to be moved, to be engaged.

My opinion, YMMV :P

maybe everyone who goes extreme in any hobby falls into same category.

those who spend 5 figures on fish, 5 figures on food, 5 figures on watch, 5 figures for bags, 5 figures for camera lenses, etc..

Telling the ladies .. listen.. the vocal is from the center 3 feet behind the speakers, singer voice sound warm, music instrument has a clear separation, sound stage is very wide and airy... etc.. they might think we are "mentally unstable" (siao).  ;D

don't think count as mentally unstable bah, i have to agree with botak, spending $10k on a bag, but a $100 or $1000 one does the same thing, though on that note, i do also buy other stuff that seems expensive to some, shoes, bags, but i generally don't buy branded but buy good quality, branded doesn't mean quality, but quality might also be branded.

same think for audio for me, though i'm very new to this, but i try to get everything to be about as good as i can afford/ willing to pay for, so there's no weak link. i don't spend thousands on speakers and skimp on amplifier, or source. i have to say, i'm quite happy with where i am right now, i just don't know how good this setup is (don't have audio siao friends to share knowledge). on paper might not look like much, but at least to those who have heard, they are all surprised that it didn't cost as much as they expected.
