External bluray drive recommendations?
« on: May 30, 2020, 19:14 »
Hi all,

Even with physical drives slowly becoming a thing of the past, I am still buying CDs or Blurays at concerts.. however the number of bluray drives available in the market is exceedingly low, probably since low demand.

Any recommendations? I can only see some outdated offerings from Asus, or maybe consider to import a Pioneer or LG..

I still own a Nimbie for mass ripping of CDs, so that's less of an issue.

Thanks Audio.

Went to Pioneer website and have a look and saw something interesting:
https://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Computer/Computer+Drives/BDR-X12UBK

More bulky item but looks to have better read, and also some features for audio CDs. However can't find anyone selling this...

I'll probably pick up the same model (XD07) off ebay.

As a reference for those buying Japanese.. I was wondering whats the difference between XD07J and XD07BK, it's reading of Ultra HD.

I bought this Pioneer during my last Osaka trip.

Ordered this Pioneer on Sunday from Japan, and today (Wed) it's already in my home. Super fast shipping.

Yet to test out the ripping, but it works via single cable. :)

I bought the ASUS BW-16D1HT, UHD Friendly Internal 5.25 at SLS. Paid about $125
Then bought the Vantec external enclosure from Amazon.

Used Anydvd n makemkv to backup my UHD disc collection to iso n mkv formats

Interesting idea, thanks for sharing.. I think end up about similar price after considering the enclosure.

Are you using the new anydvd under redfox? I'm abit apprehensive to buy after reading all the reviews, still using old version which works for my old media. I'm testing makemkv for my newer stuff now which seems to work fine.

The reason I went this route was bcos I dun have desktops....using NUCs and notebook. Also, there were no known friendly UHD external drives then.

Am using the new Anydvd ....so far so good

Btw, my friend bought the same drive from AliExpress . I bought the last piece at sls . Just happened that it was the only shop selling it n was the last piece.

Strange. The pioneer xd07 is not listed as a UHD friendly drive

The Pioneer has a few versions of XD07, only the J-UHD is UHD.. also it is a Japanese domestic model.

Don't think I have UHD disks to test, but at least the XD07J-UHD works fine with makemkv and anydvd (old).

Even though the top cover is abit flimsy, the drive is stable, maybe because less moving parts than usual laptop drive. So far it's been reading my discs fine.. can get abit noisy but usually it spins slower when ripping so that's ok. Does not get hot at all (versus most of my internal drives).
