Can full hd tv plays hdr movie?
« on: September 17, 2019, 23:25 »
Hello bro, i’m confusing..Wondering whether full hd tv can plays hdr movie if the hdr source is play through a hdr compatible set top box/ streaming device?
As i’m planning to replace my old tv now, if above works i will probably save some money to fund a bigger screen 4k tv w/o having hdr and dolby vision features. Hope to hear from bros soon!

HDR is not only dependant on the hardware hidden in the TV model u own,it's also dependant on the software u feed it in. so,if ur TV is a old model that couldn't detect HDR and react as accordingly,u may* or may not** get “full” HDR.

for example,my player is not HDR type, yet my Panasonic TV is. most of the discs i fed into my player are not HDR “encoded”,however,i get some sort of “hybrid/partially enhanced HDR” effect with some(quite a number of recent years made movies) ,while some older transfers doesn't.

*i wonder does upgrading ur media output source will give u “hybrid/partial effect”.
**at least on my case,“hybrid/partial HDR effect” achieved. with my TV possess both HLG n HDR10 processing.

on TV buying choice,if u r comfortable with current size as well as FHD resolution, new FHD TVs with HDR processing is available out there, sized 40inches and above.
4k TVs without HDR is also available out there. so,blindly choosing one without looking thru into the specs of the TV u eyeing on,may bring u disappointment rather than enjoyment.

If you have an Oppo 20x series with HDMI input, you could in theory send an HDR signal through the Oppo and get it to convert HDR to SDR so it would look (not too bad) on an SDR display.

Hi bro Yang i’m using zidoo Z9S at the moment, but didn’t notice any improvement when watching hdr movie on my SDR display. Perhaps there might be some setting missed out? but i’m not sure.

Bro doggies that mean there is no way for me to get HDR equivalent quality on my SDR display even if they decoded thru HDR capable player?

Nope.

HDR means the movie was intended to be displayed on a tv that can handle much higher brightness.

Your SDR tv probably handles like 100 nits.

HDR can be designed for 10x 20x 40x 80x or more than that.

Plus you also won’t get the extended color gamut

For the money, I would look at a 75" X95G from Sony. It has got enough brightness and a good local array dimming and a big size.

That or the cheapest 65" OLED if you can live with a smaller size. I think this year, the bargain might be the Panasonic 950/1000 series with both Dolby Vision and HDR10+

That’s a nice recommendation but if TS is looking to save $, somehow I don’t think he is looking at a panel that costs so much ..
But the recommendations are true
You need high nits and good contrast if HDR is important
Cheers

Bros thanks for advise and recommendation, i will pen down to my shopping list. 60-65 inches would be great for my watching experience now, since my seating area to tv panel not so far away.

I would rather spend a bit more and get a good enough tv that will last a few years than be forced to upgrade in shorter cycles.

I still think the ZD9 and C7 OLED aren’t completely outshone by newer models.
