DIY Upgrade Dynaudio Confidence Center
« on: July 19, 2019, 01:17 »
I have had this Maple Gen 1 version Confidence Center for 5years.
So i guess its time to perform a 2nd Major mod to it.
Previously i replaced Copper wires and WBT Platinum binding post.

expected, the accoustic foam inside has started to degrade, copper wires also turn green color.
(previously i did not have dehumidifier, now i have invested in 1 that is on almost every alternate day.

Throw away all the damaged foams.

Still very dirty, use vacuum to remove all the small particles.

Now use WBT 0703 pure copper solder direct to crossover. removed previous WBT platinum version.
(i learnt from someone that the binding post should be a fast direct connection instead of big solid classic look)
anyway i have shared before, all the newer generation Dynaudio top range speakers are using the next Gen version.

Got these accoustic foam and rock wool from the states. very nice egg crate type.
fill the whole cabinet as its original state.

Soldering back the drivers is the most tedious part, i made slightly longer length to future proof so i need not remove everything should i want to mod something again.

Now the Confidence Center even sounds better than before. using more copper in the cabinet connection IS the way to go. Vocals more engaging, bass goes deeper as well. need to run in the cables a week or so before i share more details.
Taking care of your speakers very important so it stays at its peak performance.

in order to hear distinctively the improvement, use concert musical disc that Sings more from center. however there is a movie which i particularly like is 5th Element.

Good mods and IMO the most value for the price of these speakers.

Nice mods DJQ. The picture doesn't show, but soldering the wires directly to the binding posts and speaker driver terminals is a nice mod too.

Any reason why the sandcast resistors were not changed ? I would have at least changed the L-pad resistors to the tweeter.
Less is more !

yup was busy soldering and i forgotten to take pictures of it.
the resistor values for the Confidence Center crossover was very weird. i could not find the exact value for all of them from Hifi Collective and Parts Express. i know Sim lim Tower sure have but they are not audiophile grade plus at best only 5% tolerance. the Dayton resistors was 2% from Parts Express. likewise Mundorf Ceramic resistors 2%. so i did not change them. or maybe i should? i remember i did change those for the Focus 110.

Congratz!
The foam deterioration could have caused degradation in bass performance

Thanks guys. its a passion.
anyway after 1 week run in. will have some serious catchup on some HT musical concerts to hear if there is an acute improvement.
still might be difficult as C2 is driven by Plinius SA103 and the Center driven by Denon AVR center chn amp.
