Jewel Cinema
« on: April 23, 2019, 15:04 »
Hai....just came from Jewel Shaw Cinema got the wrong tickets but manage to sit to view the lumiere Set up .

Arrangement is very exclusive less than 30 seats, lounge chairs was great motorize leather recliner type . Ambient light control is much better than their other cinemas .

Projection is DLP projector ( do not know the brand ) the intresting was the screen it has horizontal masking during screening . I have suspect the screen material is a silver type as it has the shin + glitter and hot spotting a some brighter scene . Also in the black scene and colour it does not do so well .

Later going to try out the normal cinema and watch "Shazam " hope it will better .

Ahh...i just finish watching Shazam just now in a different theatre it is no 7 it is also able to do IMAX .

The projector use was also another DLP , this time round the screen use is a white type Perforated type . It was also very well control light . They must have use a white screen perforation as my Wife notice the striation during white field . It was a much better experience and the colour was good , with good uniformity . Lastly they screen has a masking system also but only on the upper portion where there is black masking on the TOP comes down .

After finish the movie they close the theatre for movie critics and industries people . They are showing Avenger endgame . Likely in the IMAX Theatre .
Should have a good review on the Avenger Endgame .

Shaws only put lots of investment on the new cinemas, but neglect about the aged ones, as well as adjusting their tix price such that they can draw more cinemagoers which in turn can generate more box-office take ins like GV do... Pity.

I watched the same movie at GV Tampines, clarity for picture was day and night difference , the GV ones are quite out of date and carry about the same ticket price , not sure I think few bucks difference

The Dolby Atmos in GV is really a Dolby “MiniATMOUSE”, sound quality totally cannot make it. Shaw ones are much better in this department.

But having said that, the Lumiere ones in DTSX also doesn’t feel as good. Somehow I find that the speaker placements are all way too high up. It feels as if all the action is happening “up there” , when it should have been on the ground while looking on the screen

Bass was slightly better, with decent dynamics, movement , nice punch, but sounds like heavily “EQ”Ed” type of signature.

I still prefer the Shaw at Punggol, that one is the best for me so far

I have stopped patronizing GV for nearly a decade, after an experience of out of focus projection. A NO NO for a cinema.

I see, yea GV cinemas are quite backward, lotsa catching up to do, sound and picture quality wise , both inferior to Shaw cinemas , Gv Bishan is horrible as well, blurry , I think they can improve further, but probably cost is a factor ...

Or they probably paid, and got a lousy job done , or probably paid peanuts and got monkeys...

Agree. Problem is, normal folks don’t care about these things. So cinema operators don’t care. I’ve been to cinemas with no masking so you can see the black bars. Super distracting. Pointed out to the person I was with and he didn’t care. Seems like it only bugged me. No wonder the cinemas no longer put in effort.

My quick thoughts on the PQ and SQ at Jewel lumiere 26 seater cinema.

PQ:
The Lumiere screen comes with top horizontal masking down.
Silky clear
subtitles are sharp. :)
As I am sitted at middle MLP , I do notice in the middle there a " tiny" shiny hotspot shining from the top PJ lens.
Overall, screen quality is clear and pleasant to view

SQ wise :
Center dialogue behind screen is clear and good.
JBL surround format seem solid but
petty disappointing not much impact at body or ground level.
Seem like the sound impact is " happening" at the higher or ceiling level

Punggol " Dolby 7.1" SHAW sound better my feel. :)

Wah ...getting inspiration .

I was actually checking out the AT material screen used at Jewel, it seems like perforated material , trying to compare and see how it is, since I was early. It’s my first PJ, trying to learn as much.

Dialogue was good as mentioned by rock123 , nice vocals emanating from perforated screen

Was also checking out viewing angle, seated at row D. Initially screen felt big, after sometime, the eyes sort of adjusted to it....

Yes I think  the room itself is not ideal, so much GAP above us (not fully sealed) plus we were sitting right in the middle, exactly in a null position for bass, I reckon the sides would have been better. But I can feel the movement on the bass, mid to Low frequency transition, definitely EQ’ed, just that the seat to seat variation is greater in that Lumiere room

Next time must try all the way back, right or left side

Love the laser PJ though , nice
