Is Network streamer necessary?
« on: April 16, 2019, 07:49 »
Hi all,

I'm currently using my avr x7200wa to stream spotify and I'm thinking is there anyway to improve the the sound. than I came across chromecast audio and bluesound node 2.

since the avr is capable of streaming "very high" quality ( according to the spotify app) do I was thinking is it necessary to add CCA or node 2? will there be any significant improvement?

in the future I may join the tidal force.

If you can tell FLAC 0 apart from WAV then it's worth.

since CCA unable to do flac, so I'm suppose u are talking are node 2?
means CCA not worth it?

I was just given you seen examples.  Both FLAC 0 and WAV are lossless technically while former is a compressed.

Your 7200WA can play both and see if you can hear the different.  If you can , means been cursed , then ...

IMHO, if you are going to use the AVR as your preamp with a higher end streamer, it will not make much of a difference if any, as the AVR will still be the bottleneck.  :P

Using an alternate means to give it a digital feed will not yield any improvement.

We have customers using Lumin D2 (Spotify Connect MQA Tidal Qobuz Roon Ready) with analog output to Denon and reported positively.  The Denon should be switched to Pure Direct mode.

if node 2, will be using its onboard dac and run analog out to the avr.

main function will be streaming online music, spotify and tidal.

Yes, of course this should be the way to connect and it's also what I was referring to.
What I meant was the AVR will "limit" the SQ of what your streamer analog outputs can deliver.
But if you are going this route, it's still possible to have slight improvement.
Just don't spend too much on the streamer unless you are prepared to spend more on a dedicated stereo preamp or Integrated amp with HT-Bypass.

what's the guideline?
looking at node 2 around 500

Streamer as preamp, avr as power amp. Should yield some improvement.

Unclear what you want to do exactly...

A "streamer that supports HT bypass" meaning you want your HT source digital bit-stream to flow through the Steamer? Or did you mean you want the AVR's analog Pre-out Front R/L signal to pass-through the Streamer??  If it's the latter, then you need a Streamer/Pre-amp that has analog inputs to begin with, so none of the Cambridge Audio ones will do, the NAD C 658 probably works... but you'll still need to route it's analog output to an Amp somewhere though.

What exactly are you trying to do?
You'll never get to heaven with a smile on your face from me.

You have a seriously good AVR. AK4490 DAC. FLAC/WAV support.

Free advice: when streaming Spotify, try PureDirect mode that shuts off all EQ, video processing. Does the sound quality improve?

Spotify Free is only 160kbps.
Spotify Paid is 320kbps.
Which one are u on?

Adding unnecessary equipment is a waste of money.

Great, you're using the paid Spotify.

May I suggest this simple sound quality test (FOC).
1. Get your favorite CD that is also available on Spotify.
2. Rip the CD to WAV/FLAC files (you can use EAC software).
3. Copy the WAV/FLAC files to a thumbdrive, and stick the thumbdrive to your AVR.
4. Now, play your favorite song from the thumbdrive, using AVR PureDirect mode.
5. Then, stream the same song from Spotify, using AVR PureDirect mode.
6. Repeat 4/5 as many times as required.

Do you hear any difference?
What difference do you hear?
Which is more pleasant? enjoyable?
