I’m assuming it doesn’t even reach HDD boot.

If PC is very old, check CMOS battery on motherboard.
Check and reseat DRAM.
Reset BIOS to default config may help.

PC BIOS battery is commonly just a CR2032 battery.
If the message says something like Checksum error or Date Time error.

reboot to bios means what? just restart and restart ? did it manage to boot to windows?

if battery low... it will probably hang there with a fault...  press f1 to continue

it keep on rebooting, maybe something else... power supply? motherboard

Strange no such message.

It will boot into bios and I will exit the bios without making changes and into windows. Funny huh
I have tried hard reboot and it will still boot into bios again.

Is the scenario like this?
1. PC is powered OFF
2. PC switched ON
3. PC hoes through POST then goes into BIOS screen.
4. You don’t make any BIOS change, save and exit BIOS.
5. PC continues booting into Windows.
6. Windows works normally.
7. You can use Windows without problems for hours.
8. You shutdown Windows.

Going back to step 1, the same steps repeat?

If yes, very very good chance your motherboard battery is dead. Changing the battery would be a good starting point. That battery is cheap.

Reason: after you shutdown/OFF PC, and if the battery is dead, your BIOS configuration setting will be lost once the capacitor discharge (maybe 5mins). When you power up, the BIOS think it is a new unconfigured motherboard, so bring you to BIOS screen.

sometimes symptoms are

time/date will reset to some 1990 date after cold boot

or wouldnt even boot to windows, cos u lost all your settings

if the bios settings retain, battery should be still good

This is one sign of virus infection. Better shutdown before more damage is done. Then find a way to backup important files.

If faced with this sort of situation, I would take out the HDD. Put the HDD into a HDD dock. Attach HDD as external disk to a laptop. Scan for virus and fix. Copy out important data files. After that I will nuke the HDD and install fresh copy of Windows. If possible use original Windows on CD, not some downloaded slipstream version that may have embedded virus. Nowadays the virus sibei scary one.

There is nothing important or private files in the hdd. The deleted files can easily restore from the recycle bin. I will replace the battery and do a full installation.

Any good and free anti virus software?

Any good and free anti virus software?

I’m using Avast as primary anti-virus.

Plus occasional manual scans using Malwarebytes to cross check.
