Help: Larger sized TVs: Sony Z9D vs OLEDs
« on: March 26, 2018, 20:02 »
Bros,
Sometime later this year, I am considering upgrading from my plasma 64" to a 75-77" TV.
Right now, correct me if I am wrong, the OLED 77" TVs, be it the 2017 or 2018 models from LG / Panasonic / Sony will cost close to 20k or more?
That means that the 75" Sony ZD9 is quite VFM (what a word) at 10k.. Not cheap, but definitely cheaper..

I would like to ask everyone for their opinion on this..

And to preempt it:
I won't want a similar sized 65", which is kind of a side move, even if it's 4k.. I might as well keep my current set.. I know the sweet spot is probably the smaller sized ones..

Neither is a projector on the cards, I had one before, and it became a white elephant - my place just isn't suitable for any screen larger than 80"

Thanks bros!

Just some context... when I first saw bro Jeff's OLED, I thought that's it, it's going to be an OLED. Does 3D, superb contrast and blacks, no bloom etc.. it was amazing. But the cost of the OLED 77" was just too high... 30k plus.. even now, I don't think there's any OLED which will cost around the 10k mark... happy to be proven wrong..
So should I settle for the best no OLED TV money can buy?

The most expensive LED TV cannot be quite VFM.

If projector is not on the cards, u won't go wrong with oled. I switched from plasma to the LG C7 recently and it's a major day and night difference.

Even my normal tv programmes and SD materials are now so enjoyable to watch.

The PQ is top notch. And I am very picky on pq

I agree that the OLED picture is amazing, but at the current prices, it's way too expensive..
Or I can opt for a cheaper >70" 4k panel first.. otherwise I may hold fire until the price drops significantly..
Does anyone have an idea of the price of the 2018 77" OLEDs?

I would also agree to save more for oled. That's a major step up like hdr. I don't think 4k make a big diff to consider a upgrade. If u switch to a 'temp' 4k now, next time need to dispose such a big screen will be difficult.

I think 10k is my threshold..
Anything more is way too painful...
10k for a 77" is a lot of money..
A  1080p or 4k projector covers that will cost less. Definitely less than a 4k 77" OLED TV anyway :)

Does anyone have an idea of the price of the 2018 77" OLEDs?

LG just introduced 77" size  in their C series for 2018. But the thing is it's US$6k more than the 65".  Likely above $10k.... Too bad the B series do not have 77"
•   65-inch OLED65C8PUA ($3,500)
•   77-inch OLED77C8PUA ($9,000)

I would say, (and +1 with Ralfale) don't waste your money on a 4k panel first. The improvement is not that great. The PQ of OLED is in a different league. Later if u change again to OLED, you lose even more monies.

If you can wait, hold off for a display/IT show piece for the LG C8; or hold a group buy later this year. The OLED will bring u smiles.

The 65" ones are at a sweet price point actually if u are keen and dont want to wait that long.

For me, the poison was too strong for me after seeing the PQ difference and also researching on the reviews.... so took the plunge and broke my bank.

Thanks
The c8 could be nice..
That's why the ZD9 is interesting...it's priced lower here than Usa .. can't say that of most panels.. and it's made to last, with one of the best processors too..
Lets hope the C8 solves some of those banding issues..
A display set is a bit scary.. especially if they are prone to burn in..

one can only guess what the C8 77" will be priced at in SG, that should be a key determining factor when you eventually have to decide on your purchase.

I think my budget is a bit low for the large OLEDs :(
But I really don't want to get the same size panel as my current TV..
That's the irony... after so many years, the costs haven't dropped as much as I hoped. Unless I go for the lower Sonys which have larger 75" panels. But these are also LCD/ LED..
