Is the firmware available in Singapore already? My 8500 tells me there is no update.

Found the firmware on the website. Looks like there’s also HEOS update.

After the FW update and a rerun of the auto cal, the speaker positions are spot on, and I can finally use my VOG speaker!
Will try out a few configurations and see how it sounds..

Since we are talking about firmware update from AVR manufacturers, latest industry news (break by Gene of Audioholics) is that Dolby will be imposing a restriction on their proprietary upmixer aptly called the Dolby Surround Upmixer (DSU) for upcoming AVRs to be released in the 2019 and possibly via firmware update for current batches of AVRs in the market. What this mean is that you can no longer choose to upmix a DTS signal to utilize the DSU as a secondary upmixer for its height effects anymore...Good or bad, you will be the judge of it...but personally I don't see it as an issue but for those who are concerned, pls be wary of future firmware updates which may "crippled" this upmixer feature by Dolby.

See this clip for more details:

Caveat: Information is rather sketchy at this point according to Gene so nothing is cast in stone yet. Await for more details...

It seems that Dolby knows it has DTS-X beaten, and is now trying to corner the market with less than friendly overtures?
It will not be good to have one dominant force, and with Dolby Vision also sprinting out of the posts, we may see Dolby as the dominant player for the next few years..

Personally I don't see any problem with Dolby trying to defend their IP. Auro 3D or DTS has been fairly quiet and I don't see any developments while Dolby has been putting a lot of R&D and making inroads not just in the cinema but also in the home theater community. They commanded the right to do it for their continuous R&D efforts...it is up to the rivals to do catch-up and make themselves more competitive.

My 2 cents...

I think they did well, but a monopoly, ala Microsoft can have negative side effects.. lack of future urge to innovate for example..
And costs may go up. What if they charge so much royalties that our DV equipped discs increase in price?

I did a short and highly subjective test with a few 5.1/7.1 tracks that had excellent surround effects, like Sherlock Holmes (scene in the abattoir), John Carter, and a nice HKG show called "PTU" where you will feel that you are in the middle of a busy HKG street and the moment the young Daredevil wakes up in the hospital and he can hear all the ambient noises amplified.
The Auro had a odd effect for the street scenes in PTU - you feel the street level was elevated instead of being as immersive as DSU or Neural X. Likewise, it fair better for 'rain' and 'helicopter' scenes where there was clearly something overhead, but in terms of putting you in the scene, IMO, DSU and Neural X did better. Neural in particular liked to 'overcook' the surrounds, which I didn't like, but I know some friends who deliberated turn the ceiling speakers up to get that overhead feel.

Auro also did best with a specific scene from "Fury", where Brad Pitt and his lads were trapped inside the tank, with bullets, footsteps and other noises all around - kudos to the mixer!

Of the three, DSU/Atmos seemed to be the most immersive, but dialogue was best with DTS-X/Neural X and Auro 3D with my 10.1 VOG setup was 'elevated'.. I guess you could say I was high on sound :)

I will do a better audition later this weekend.

It has been stagnant for many years (nearly a decade long) before Object based sound mix became the "new poster" boy...There is only so much a home theater sound mix can do its magic. Personally I do not think it will stifle innovation...if there are more "creative" ways to make movie watching experience more "experiential" in the near future, I'm sure DTS will also jump in...

For those on the fence of whether to spend another extra $2K+ to get the 8500 or settle for a 7200WA, you may wish to pay a visit to some of the member's place for a test-run and hear for yourself if 8500 is indeed worth shelling out the extra $$$...this will be the best way imo. I will probably pay member's place a visit to hear for myself the sonic prowess of the 8500. Any 8500 owner living near Yishun and welcome me, do drop me a PM.

I did some 'old is gold' experiments today and popped in some DVDs to view on my 75" TV.. well, if you have changed all your settings to "enhanced" mode on the options, it won't work if you use a legacy device like an Oppo 83.. you have to use "standard".. I might swop out the cable later on, just to see if it's a cable issue..
Sadly, no matter how good the upscalers are in either the Oppo or your TV, you can't turn a pig's ear into a purse.. it's watchable for sure, but you do yearn for better...
