Amperex Bugle Boy (Current Production Type)
« on: May 04, 2002, 01:31 »
Just got a 12AX7 (thanks to Silklee), its not the NOS version.

Played some male vocals (Danny Summer).
Noticed that imaging were very good and musical too.

Just my personal views.

the box looks freshly printed..very glossy and nice :)

When it sounds good, who cares it's NOS or made in USSR or Russia or watever..

But $51...hmm..hmmmm... a real authentic NOS bugle boy will cost more than twice that. kekeke.

Just checked the website (tubeworld.com), there are a few types of bugle boys:

12AX7 AMPEREX BUGLE BOY HOLLAND 1950's (it long plates type, rare, they dont even have stock for this.)

12AX7 AMPEREX BUGLE BOY HOLLAND 1959-1962
(It's large round, Getter Halo type). They have this but not much quoted at US$110.

12AX7 AMPEREX BUGLE BOY HOLLAND 1962-1968
(Small round, Getter Halo)

I do not play EL34s (must ask silklee). I have the Sovtek 12AX7, not too bad. Mine do not have the red bird & star logos.

Nothing much at Adelphi these days. Was choosing some LPs when I had second thoughts...better save the money for something else. Got Pink Floyd's The Wall at MWH instead...

As for current production Sovtek, I have the EL34s and the 12AX7LPSs. They are slightly grainy and not refine on my system. I prefer the EHs and JJ/Teslas over them. Older production 5751s should be a good choice prior to going for Mullards and Teles. There are also many substitutes for AX7 and AT7 to play around with...depends on how deep your pocket is and your preferences...
