Synopsis
Visionary filmmakers James Cameron (AVATAR) and Robert Rodriguez (SIN CITY) create a groundbreaking new heroine in ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL, an action-packed story of hope, love and empowerment. Set several centuries in the future, the abandoned Alita (Rosa Salazar) is found in the scrapyard of Iron City by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate cyber-doctor who takes the unconscious cyborg Alita to his clinic. When Alita awakens she has no memory of who she is, nor does she have any recognition of the world she finds herself in. Everything is new to Alita, every experience a first. As she learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield Alita from her mysterious past while her street-smart new friend, Hugo (Keean Johnson), offers instead to help trigger her memories. A growing affection develops between the two until deadly forces come after Alita and threaten her newfound relationships. It is then that Alita discovers she has extraordinary fighting abilities that could be used to save the friends and family she’s grown to love. Determined to uncover the truth behind her origin, Alita sets out on a journey that will lead her to take on the injustices of this dark, corrupt world, and discover that one young woman can change the world in which she lives.

A movie more than a decade in development. There's even a few posts on this forum about this movie back in 2003!

I'm not really sure about the CGI-real action hybrid used for the main character Alita. It's really out of place with the anime-inspired big eyes. Of cos, she is supposed to be cyborg but I doubt she was meant to stand out in that way. A lot of the comments I had read so far make reference to the creepy scary big eyes.

That aside, the world of Alita looks fantastic and the CG looks more than decent. It should do well at the box office but it will have serious competition from films like Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! (20 Jul 2018), Ant-Man & The Wasp (Jul 6), Skyscraper (Jul 13), and Mission: Impossible 6 (Jul 27).

Cyberpunk anime seems to be hot with Hollywood now. Following the lackluster Ghost in the Shell, here's hoping that Alita would do a better job commercially; but as always, fans of the series will be hoping that Hollywood dun muck up the story too much.

This is the actress playing the role of Alita. See how different she is...

She lovely and perfectly suited for the role of Alita.

I dun understand the boneheaded decision to spend millions to turn a beautiful actress into an almost unrecognisable freak!  >:(

Remind me of the countless boneheaded decision WB exces had made with DCEU but I digress.  :-X

Director Robert Rodriguez confirmed what I suspect all along. That the only reason why Alita has un-natural CG eyes was because of James Cameron's ego.

Quote
It was always Jim's intention to create a photo-realistic version of the manga eyes that we're so accustomed to seeing. We really wanted to honour that tradition and see that look standing next to any human character. To have the right person to emote behind it was really essential. Her origins are in the film and you understand why she looks that way. If the eyes are the windows to the soul, we have some pretty big windows. You can see a lot going on in there! When it gets to the emotional scenes it's really uncanny and striking. And captivating!

Captivating? If it was captivating the trailer would have drawn praises instead of mostly negative and uneasy reactions.

I kind of like the CG effect. It's something different and gives this film sort of an anime/manga feel. Looking forward to watching this next year

Personally I think the "big saucy eyes" though looked kinda out of place and creepy will eventually get used to it. As long as the movie itself is good, it forgivable imo. This is merely creativity opinions.

The 2nd trailer for Alita: Battle Angel has been finally released.

Still no shots of the rumoured 'Motorball' that JC has wanted to include.

For the uninitiated, Motorball can perhaps be described as 'Rollerball meets demolition derby on Steroids'. Better still, take a look at this beautifully rendered 3D animation of the fabled Motorball. (Be kind. This animation is more than 10 yrs old)

I did not realise that the film has been delayed to 21 Dec. Which means its not only going head to head with Aquaman, Bumblebee and Mary Poppins returns. There are whispers that Aquaman may be released a week earlier.

I applaud his courage in trying something that looks really strange on the screen. I was also uncomfortable with the big eyes the first time I saw the trailer. Knowing the reason behind it helps a little, and now I'm looking forward to the origin story he mentioned. (Is that a spoiler in a way?) I hope it's going to be an interesting twist because the premise isn't anything new.

Thought it was pretty good overall... Only downsides were; almost nothing of a soundtrack, a little too much time spent on the romance with Yugo, and (IMHO) the rather poor CGI of her face spoilt the overall look. The Desty Nova actor reveal blew me away!  ;D
