No local industries, small market, low spending power, budget constraints... Etc

Just a few key factors that effect Singapore audio industrial scene.

Even for locally produced audio products, getting reckons by local is already a difficult task. And also a reason why DIY is total silent now.

To be brutally honest, we only got ourselves to blame for the current audio industry climate.

actually, I don't think we have low spending power. Look at the iPhones that has been snapped up, look at the crowds at the travel fairs, look at the condos that has been sold... There is budget out there. The key is to figure out how to make audio take a portion of that budget. Audio has always been very technical with measurements, multi drivers, DAC, pre amps, amps, DSP, Flac format, etc...  Technical details don't go too well with the masses. Connecting to the network is already an issue, let alone hooking up a DAC, Pre amp, Amp, Sub , Speakers. Apple did the right thing by focusing the marketing message on lifestyle, ie. that it is hip to have the iPhone.

I can bet maybe 50% of the iPhone buyers are just reselling them away for profit.

They can have tons of budget for electronic gadgets, but mostly will not spare much for audiophile.

Alot people in Singapore buy condo also for resale purposes or rent out for money.

Please lah. We don't need to dumb down our hobby with lifestyling and feminism to attract the masses.

If these kuniang masses gets a headache everytime we talk technical then tell them to stay away.

I don't want to jostle with a big crowd or wait in a queue just to listen to the latest $30k dac or that $50k turntable.

I have always believed that if the Adelphi dealers work with each other, rather than against each other, they can do a very good version of ISSE and pull in crowds. Hold it coordinated in Adelphi itself over a weekend with offers and publicity. The dealers put forward their best products for demo to how good hi-fi can sound at different budgets.

After all in Adelphi already have head-fi, record stores, big boys Audio Note, Absolute Sound, Ong family, Norman, AV One. The boutique specialists in analog, AV, used items add to the variety and wider audience.

For the dealers, an Adelphi Festival will not entail the high costs to rent a room at hotel, nor transport gear there and back. Which participating in ISSE entails. This is unique to Adelphi as nowhere else in world is there a 1-stop collection of premium hi-fi brands in the same building. Of course won't have big boys HER, Audioline, X-Audio (actually Audio Basic can represent X-Audio).

I agree with you

 ;D

Can even do it twice a year... must elect an organising committee

Those "big boys" scared missing out will just have to move in to adelphi

Ask yourself this question, why isn't there an AV retailers' association?

Keep hearing that the KL show is better than ours. Can anyone tell us in what way its better?  Got interesting seminars like RMAF? Giveaways and show discounts? Free refreshments? Better show layout and/or appropriate equipment that interest you more? Bigger hotel rooms/better acoustics?

Never been to KL show but biggest reason I can think of why I could prefer is because exhibitors will be people I have never met before. If SG show is  in Adelphi ... I probably won't go or enjoy because I probably have run into most dealers before and I don't really care to see some of their sour CBBs again. Haha

Maybe ppl from KL are saying that SG show is better for the same reason  :o

i went and i said yes. One reason and almost the only reason for me. At least KL show those demo and selling products more "wallet friendly"....SG show every year Wilson Audio or Audioline displaying few hundred K display system, how many of visitors afford to own?
For me, hifi should serve 2 purposes, display and showcase the latest products, or promote low-mid class equipment with superb offers, but seems SG show reverse both purpose...
HT: Pioneer LX-89, Emotiva XPA-5, Dali Ikon 7 MK2, Tannoy Revolution DC6Tse, Tannoy Revolution Signature DC6LCR, Deft Tech Pro Monitor 800,Dali Lektor 2,HSU ULS15 MK2,Philips S9700, Sony 47W804
Stereo: Auralic Altair, Music Fidelity M6i

I’m sorry, but thats just complete bollocks… PAP-style blame game; everything is the people’s own fault >:(

How come you conveniently forgot to mention the f'ing-piss-poor-nonexistent event promotion/marketing by the miser-zombie event Organiser? ::) If you don’t actively promote the event, of course retailers & manufacturers are going to stay away! No wonder have to rope in “Foreign talent” Taiwanese this year… just like PAP; don’t invest in locals, instead just bring in foreigner “talent” to earn $$ from.

You'll never get to heaven with a smile on your face from me.

I agree totally with PAP that if we vote in the opposition, the market will react and tumble suddenly but there is a chance that with change it might rebound. If we stay with PAP, we will die a slow and painless death unknowingly like putting a turtle on slow boil. Idea from friend who is not convenient to vocalise like tchaikovsky due to his standing.

My point. We will remain a nation of shop keepers and barter traders which is becoming a fast disappearing breed. The little wayang to promote SMB/SME has degenerated into a unique brand of entrepreneuship aptly named gfundopreneuship as the focus has shift from innovation to maximizing govt funding. Ah Kong money.....sad sad sad
