Hee hee.... let me put the "curse of thiel" in you and let you end up like me. I started out with a budget of $1.5k for the whole system. Now, I'm determined to spend $3k on just speakers alone  ;D

Bring your favourite CD and go to Sound Decisions at UE square.  Listen to the Thiels CS1.6 and use that as a possible reference point.

After that.... no speakers will ever sound the same. ;) ;)

Thiel spks need high power watts AMP to drive. So do be careful. Prefer to be use with Pre/Power / Monobloc Combo of at least 80Watts and above. Then the spks will show it's beauty. If not dun consider.

Hey nobody ever try B&W 60x Series spks ???

Just my 2Cents.

hm..this is what i read from april's issue of Stereophile..

this reviewer was at a demo room, which displayed Wilson  (forgot the model, i think it's the MAXX) speakers and the Nagra monoblocks.

he was very impressed by the sound.. but later the exhibitor told him that the actual amplifier driving the Maxx, is a hidden Parasound amplifier, which costs less than the state tax to be paid for the Maxx.

and when they switch over to the Nagras, the sound was only just slightly better.

moral of the story.. u can get a good pair of speakers first... drive it with a decent amp...and save up for the real amp :)

or maybe it's just sales talk to induce u to buy expensive speakers? kekekeke...

No point paying for Thiel spks if your AMP can't drive it properly. There are lots of spks which are as good as the Thiel. Go for audition, seek expert advice. Open up yourself.

If I have the power from my AMP, I will definately get Thiel spks. Cos I like the sound from it also.

Just my 2Cents.

A power of 200 GOOD Watts will give u lotsa headroom for the choice of speakers.

And it should be more than enuff to drive the air molecues in all living rooms in Singapore (except for those mansions).

If you have the space and power, then the living room would be the best. But you may need some room-tweaks (eg. reflectors and bass traps) for the best imaging.

6. 200W per channel for my power amp

In general, small speakers for small rooms and big speakers for big rooms.

Can't comment much, never compare before...mission 77 series are lack of base, thus I am using them with REL Q201E Subwoofer - all purely for HTS.

Using Titus for music...surprising bass production from these bookshelf.

My friend, you have in your possession, one of my dream power amps for driving my dream speakers... the Thiels CS1.6.  The Brystons are not the most musical of power amps but they've the oomph to drive the thiels well (and it's within my budget). ;)

Take my advice, carry your brystons and your pre-amp down to UE Sq. and hook them up to the CS1.6s.  Sammy (Sound Decisions who sells the thiels) has confirmed that he has no objections to us bringing our own amps down for demo.

If, after listening you don't think the thiels are good enough for the brystons, I'll personally load your pre-amps and power amps back on your car for you! All you need to do is tell me when! ;D

Trust me, I've been listening to speakers from $2k to the F1s Tag Mclarens and there's no speaker that sings like the thiels for $3k. Heck, tell u what, now that you got me all excited at the thought, bring your pre/power down and I'll carry them to Sound Decisions for you and back (regardless of whether you like the thiels or not)!

Hi gagatron, you can hear them at Sound Decisions in UE Sq Don't know the phone no. but the guys running the place is sammy.  Hee hee, if I manage to convince Vincent to bring his brystons down, maybe we can all go and listen to it together. ;) ;)

When I went the past few times, sammy had the thiels hooked to his Lamms which is too expensive a reference system for me.  However, that system really sang!

Yesterday, he had them hooked to a second hand audio note system.  Will be going tomorrow at lunch time to listen to that.

If it is something from CD acoustics, you can be sure that it will be serverly marked up!!! Though they carry some very impressive brands (Rega, Harbeth, 47labs, Vandersteen), but their pricing is way off the mark..

For the price of the Harbeth Compact 7ES-2, I think you juz 3 x UK pricing ...

But earlier you said all solid state power amps sound the same ....so how will Brystons be different from, say, Quad which the factory uses to voice their spks?
