Then wouldn't Y and L almost always be at the back of the starting grid, barring DNF for X and K?

Not always the case - X and K have the same cars as Y and L - so there would be a huge push for Y and L to beat their team mate in qualifying. And looking at Verstappen, starting at the end isn't the end of the world.

Sorry. Don't get what you mean. I thought the starting positions is solely determined by their finishing positions in the last race and nothing to do w qualifying? In fact, if I understand it correctly, other than the first race of the season, there is no need for qualifying anymore right?

Finally, Bottas has been confirmed to team up with Hamster as expected!  Looking forward to the 2017 Formula 1 Grand Prix! :). Bigger tyres, louder and faster engines to entertain us! :)

Massa to Williams...maybe Nico will be back again...so many ups n downs
I have a pile of stuff that pushes out squiggly waveforms from smaller squiggly waveforms that sometimes come from 1's and 0's.
It's wonderful to behold as long as you don't let the magic smoke out.

Life is short! Enjoy the music while it plays, when it stops, there might be a chair for you...or  maybe not.
