Both Panny and Philly i setup to upscale to 720p in 4:3(to achieve same picture height as WS2.4 movies on that 16:9 screen) output to my 4k Panny TV.
Recently played a few numbers of WS1.85 flicks, found that Panny output luminance is slightly higher than Philly. With that slight higher luminance, some parts of the picture can look grainy(especially with SCHINDLER's LIST DVD). While Philly is more film-like but on some scenes it's darker than Panny. Both setups using Verbatim 4k cables.
Playability, both can play my Tom and Jerry cartoon VCD without issues, so as Bugs Bunny and gangs DVD. Navigation wise, switching on of subtitles or language tracks is more easier on Philly than Panny.

so bro, in your opinion, i should just get the Philips BDP2590 ( $119) right? =)

Philips operation is more easier to navigate than Panny。However,do take note that if ur device takes only optical input... Philly can be a problem.

Thanks Pete for this. Saw in your review that it is both region free for DVD and BD. Wow. :o

How much is the player and anyone knows where to get it at lower price? :)

Think need HDMI only. Player connected straight to TV. And video and sound just play from TV cos it's for young kids use only. My HT system not involved :D

Thanks all for the advice and help. Special shout out to YANG.

Went Mustafa today and took the plunge on the Philips BD player 2590 @ $119 since it's the cheapest and dvd region free. And YANG mentioned its UI is more user friendly. Wanted to check out the Sony S3700 but a pity they didn't carry this model.

used the philips 2590 for a few times for my boy's kids DVDs. The UI is simple and user friendly.

Load speeds are extremely fast too. And handles everything i throw at it.

So good

Sorry for the late reply... Thanks for the shout out.
Glad that my suggestion can help u on the choice of the Navigation part. PHILIPS really sibeh easy to handle. Unlike Panny... good picture output, but not so easy to use UI. ;D

For children's use, it's more than suffice liao. Impt is it must be easy for wife to use too! :)

I regretted selling my old Sony S380 BD player away. That player was very affordable and SQ PQ very good for the price.
