When Will Home Atmos Be Available?

Later this year. Hardware manufacturers including Denon, Integra, Marantz, Onkyo, Pioneer, Steinway Lyngdorf, Yamaha, Trinnov Audio and Definitive Technologies have already announced Atmos products.
Atmos titles on Blu-ray are coming, but specific titles and release dates are not ready to be announced yet. Additionally, some streaming platforms (again, not yet announced) will support Atmos via the lossy Dolby Digital Plus codec.

Can I Watch an Atmos Blu-ray

If I Don’t Have Atmos Equipment? Yes. Atmos will be encoded on Blu-ray in Dolby TrueHD format as a 7.1 base with additional metadata for the Atmos extensions. If you don’t have an Atmos processor, your receiver will still be able to decode in standard 5.1 or 7.1 formats.
Don’t worry, you won’t lose any sound effects when you do this. All the sounds will be folded down to the 5.1 or 7.1 base and redirected to your current speakers.
Is the 5.1 or 7.1 Track on an Atmos Blu-ray the Same as a Normal Blu-ray?

No. An Atmos Blu-ray contains only an Atmos soundtrack. The 7.1 base is a fold-down from Atmos, and may contain differences from a dedicated 7.1 mix. According to Dolby, some Hollywood sound designers were initially concerned about this, but ultimately found that the results were as good or better than dedicated 5.1 or 7.1 mixes. Of course, this is Dolby’s spin on it, so you may have to take that with a grain of salt.

Can a Normal Blu-ray Be Upmixed to Atmos?
Yes. The Atmos processor can take a standard 5.1 or 7.1 soundtrack and upmix it to the additional speakers you have installed. This will probably not sound as good as a true Atmos mix, of course.
The Atmos processor uses brand new algorithms to do this, which are not the same as the various varities of ProLogic II you may be using now to upmix stereo to 5.1 (or 5.1 to higher speaker counts). Dolby claims that the Atmos upmixing is superior to ProLogic II upmixing. Again, you may want to take that with a grain of salt until someone has the chance to do a lot of direct comparisons.

I have begun holding back my purchase of new discs, that might be re-issued with Atmos.
How do you know if they are encoded with Atmos?
This list from Dolby of the latest releases will help:

Eg, I have decided that I won't get Spiderman 2, Guardians of the Galaxy to avoid double-dipping...

Huh? That's it?

In the scheme of things not too bad already :) most movies are mixed in lossy 5.1 in the cinemas :) but they are re-engineered for the home releases so we get the DTSHDMA and TrueHD for home releases.

Huh? That's it?

Yes, for now..
That's why the marketing people at Atmos must make sure they talk to the movie companies...

For the consumer, it's important to sieve the hype from the reality. Even if all the latest movies are Atmos enabled, that still means hundreds of thousands of catalogue titles which aren't.

And for this format to succeed, we better see some titles once Atmos enable amps hit the streets..

Yeah agreed...it better have a wide selection...for starters the upcoming Godzilla 2014 edition did not have Atmos track as we come to expect of it.

The first disc:
http://www.avcesar.com/actu/id-15002/ifa-14-le-premier-blu-ray-dolby-atmos-sera-transformers-lage-de-lextinction.html

Micheal Bay has the honor, which honestly is a good choice... all action, no story, but what a ride this will be...

I have stopped buying new discs until I know what will appear in Atmos :)

Dolby has announced that Transformers 4: Age of Extinction will sport a Dolby Atmos soundtrack when it is released on September 30 (end of this month) by Paramount Pictures in the US.

Both the 2D Blu-ray 3-Disc Combo Pack and the 3D Blu-ray 4-Disc Combo Pack will offer the Dolby Atmos mix encoded in the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 soundtrack.

I am hoping to move into a new place next year and will need to set up a new HT. With Atmos, I will probably install at least 4 ceiling speakers so am very interested in Atmos content. No interest at all in TF though. Maybe Man of Steel or Star Trek into Darkness might get me excited.

Just finished watching Transformers Age of Extinction Blu-ray with Atoms track, even when my Onkyo 929 that doesn't support Atoms at the moment, I can already feel the surround presence all around me. This is easily one of the BEST showcase material for both PQ and SQ. The PQ is top-notch! For moment there I thought I am watching a true 4K feature!!! The PQ transfer is flawless IMO. And this is only mastered in 1080p. I can't imagine what a True 4K master will look like!!!

I am very confident that with the latest Atmos-ready AVR, one can hear a difference in object based sound engineering vs the normal channel "bed" stream. To be frank, I dun see the need to install speakers in the ceiling in order to enjoy Atoms track... So long as there is a "height" speakers pointing towards the MLP, one should be able to hear a big difference IMO.
