What have you learnt in Hifi?
«

Long time didn't post in this planet!
What I have learnt:
Never judge a piece of eqpt by just listening to them once. It can sound very different in different setups and rooms.
Beware of words like "good" or "best" cos tat means different things to different ppl. What u consider best can sound like sh1t to others.
As far as possible, listen to what you are buying in your own setup.
Your listening room and whatever are in the room are part of your setup.
Don't vote for pap. If u do, yr hifi will sound like sh1t

Hmm... some things I've learnt:
- The critical part of getting good sound is the tuning and matching process, not equipment purchasing, and there is no short-cut to learning.
- Being able to get high levels of enjoyment doesn't mean you need to have high end equipment.
- If your system sounds good to you, don't get caught up by the latest hype or others' comments and feel the itch to switch.

A dealer once told me that your system is a reflection of your character, and that you can tell a lot about a person by looking and listening to his setup. Agree or disagree ?
One thing I've learnt is that the word, "Reference" is a very dangerous thing. Many audiophiles that have listened a lot to their own setup take their own tonality, staging etc as the reference of what a system should sound like.

Agree. Person's character = System setup. Even size of the person = size of equipment (speakers).
Many take "Reference" as their "Preference" in terms of tonality and soundstage.

It just the same as, in my eyes a D cup (o)(o) mei mei to Chowbotak is just a B (.)(.) mei mei. So I must try to touch it n play with it then i know how big it was. Never listen to what others say

I have never heard a system tat I can really call a reference system. D or B cup is preference, not reference

I learnt humility - you can have a more expensive system that may sound worse than a cheap system that is optimised and which has components that work synergistically.

hifi brings strangers together.
But it also does the opposite at times.

That most people (not necc just xp members or just in Singapore) buy & enjoy their Hifi more with their eyes then their ears... the number of systems in very live (pun intended) living rooms with marble/homogenous tiles and glass everywhere is frighteningly common
I think they see them as functional pieces of art to display out where guests will also enjoy them...
