In tracking down an original first-press Columbia Records SACD of Dave Brubeck Quartet's “Time Out” (stunning disc acoustically!), I stumbled onto Venus Records, and picked up a couple of their SACDs… Wow! Incredible acoustics! I picked up 5 random discs, all of them sound incredible. They don't explain exactly what they mean by “DSD mastered”, but its bloody good ;D

Thanks, good to know, I’ll give it a shot. Just one “negative” though, the recording level of all the Venus SACDs I’ve got are unusually high for an SACD. Are the Archie Shepp ones the same?

The use of female nudes on some Venus covers has caused a bit of controversy, limiting their marketing in stores and on some websites (one of which substituted the back cover to promote Kenny Werner's recent With a Song in My Heart) while several Venus artists have complained about their use.

But Tetsuo Hara is convinced that his packaging is essential to his CDs. "Venus Jazz recordings reflect my total artistic concept of music, cover art and overall sound quality that I most prefer and choose. When these recordings appeal and resonate well with a lot of listeners in the world, that makes me very happy."

Alternatively, Acoustic Sounds has them online; store.acousticsounds.com/l/887/Venus

PS: All clues point to these discs being high-res PCM (24bit) transfers to DSD... though they sound very good, but caveat emptor nonetheless ;)

Mr. Hara also cares about sound quality. Although there is some controversy surrounding the "loudness" of CDs, his signature 24-bit mastering process, dubbed "Hyper Magnum Sound," produces very powerful sound with strong presence, which is adored by many audiophiles. Under the vision of the strong-willed producer, Venus Records has, after 15 years, become one of the most popular and respected jazz labels in Japan.

Despite my earlier comments, the 5th Venus disc I bought was a bit of a dud... loudened and somewhat compressed!  :-\

Still, they're putting out some good material... here's a new SACD on Venus by Anna Kolchina
