do keep an eye on the order total so that you can avoid paying the import duties also.
that is a good point. any total amounting to s$400 or more will incur 7% gst
i wasn't referring to the 7% GST actually. you will notice that as you pile on the stuff into your cart, when you hit a certain amount, you will be charged for import duties. to avoid this, you need to ensure that the total is below a certain amount, for example USD$250 or thereabouts. when your cart exceeds a certain amount, the import duties will automatically show up on the checkout screen. so you will have to remove your items one by one until the import duties disappear.
The so-called import duties is the GST payable on the total costs of purchased items to be declared at the customs. Amazon chose to collect the tax upfront and settle on your behalf when the package arrived at the customs. This would simplify the tax collection and avoid potential delay in getting the package delivered to the buyer.
This would also means that our tax collectors will have much more to collect I don't recall paying any gst for quite a number of my stuff tat cost more than $400 tat came from overseas
