« on: July 13, 2012, 10:56 »
Hi,
It is a jungle out there on this piece of music. Any recommendation? CD or SACD is fine with me.
Thanks.

Second the Montreal/Dutoit performance. Good sound and atmospheric.

I have the Chando and Hyperion SACDs.
In terms of performance, this Charles Dutoit RBCD beat both of these SACDs.

I have 2 copies of this Dutoit RBCD. Both were made in west Germany.
But there is very audible difference in sonics.
The first pressing sounds better, of course.
below is picture of the first pressing RBCD

On the later pressing, it looks identical to the first pressing, but it has the words "Made in W. Germany by PDO" print on the silver ring spindle hole area.

try to find the first pressing, without the words "Made in W. Germany by PDO", if you can.

I like this version... Excellent performance and recording.

Sorry to hear that. You can try " That CD" shop. Give them a call to confirm stock.  :)

I went to That CD store for a quick browse before heading to hmv as I suspect hmv might have a wider selection. The classical selection at That CD store seems limited.

Order online. Classical stuff in local cd shops are pretty miserable.

That's quite a discovery and seems interesting...I'll check it out. Thanks

Guess I'll have to do that. I tot can get from shops so don't have to wait to enjoy the music mah. There are other planet albums in hmv but I prefer to stick to the recommendations made by the bros here hehe

The Hyperion SACD not bad actually. It is a pure dsd recording.
It has an "alternative" ending, in addition to the original.
So you getting 2 full length orchestration in one disc.
Ernest in ndv should still have a copy.
The Charles dutoit RBCD original pressing only available on eBay.
You may wait weeks or months before some seller diligently post photo of the disc inside.

Go to HMV at 313 and ask for Ng or Siew in the classical section and he can give good advice and order for you also. Very friendly also. I am a long time customer there.

This, in my opinion, is one of the best recording I had heard for this piece of music, and it is conducted by one of the top (and my favourite) conductor. Worth paying the extra for a XRCD.

A lot of choose from - just go with your favourite orchestra / conductor then? :)
