Online places to buy HD quality music?
« on: April 11, 2012, 19:58 »
I no longer buy CD's and prefer to buy inline but in formats 24/44, 24/96 and 24/192 (if available).

I buy from Boomkat (good for off the radar music) and 2L for classical, but anyone have any other good suggestions?
I tried HDTracks but they wouldn't sell to me in singapore as they don't cover this region for some reason.

Cheers

For HD Tracks, can the downloaded tracks copied to another computer or is it only exclusive for one computer only? I have both Mac and Windows notebooks.

If you access HD Tracks through a VPN, you can use a Singapore credit card for purchases.  There's no DRM on HD Tracks music

Ah now thats a good idea as I am regularly using a VPN :)

By the way this is not HD music but I found a website offering 320K MP3's called 7 Digital and they have a SG store and the prices of the music I got was ridiculously cheap, kept waiting for me to be directed to some Russian Porn Page after each click, but no, paid with Paypal and got the new Philco Fiction EP (Norweigen band, sounds like Bjork) for SGD3.69!!

Can find them at http://sg.7digital.com

Over the past 2 weeks I finally started really exploring high resolution audio downloads and fiddling with streams into my DAC. Sources for commercially available stuff is scattered all over the place, a pain in the ass to scour around, so I revived this thread as a reference point for others also looking to explore the world of high-resolution download music.

A couple of reference sites to start with though;
http://www.audiostream.com/content/hd-music-download-sites: a very good article, currently lists almost 30 Online music sources and appears to be updated regularly. Though not all mentioned sites are high rez, nor downloadable

These are just some of the ones I read through personally, I'm sure there are tonnes more references

Premonition Records is beginning to offer the sale of DSD downloads at 2.8MHz (64fs) and the first title to be offered is Patricia Barber's Companion at USD30 a pop! It includes the provenance of the analogue-tape to DSD transfer as well.

http://www.premonitionrecords.com/productdetail.php?p=107

Good news for DSD-loving music lovers. Opus 3 Records will be rolling out their online DSD offerings in either DSD64 (2.8 MHz) or DSD128 (5.6 MHz) flavours in the coming weeks. In case you are not aware, Opus 3 records in native DSD for all their recordings. Meanwhile, there is a sample track in each of the DSD sampling frequencies by simply filling up the online form!

Pono Music
The Godfather of Grunge's pride & joy  ;D

https://ponomusic.force.com

i really hope this one lives up to its hype & potential - when it eventually launches, that is. just looking at the artistes' catalogue on display, this one really has the potential to rival HDTracks - especially in terms of information regarding mastering, which HDTracks sorely lacks. plus customers will be allowed to post their own reviews of the quality of the hi res music files for other potential customers to decide if they too want to buy or not. pretty much like how amazon's customer reviews work!

i may not end up buying the pono player but if the music store delivers on what it promises, i may end up being a regular customer there.

HD Tracks has imposed territory restrictions (recently i think). My last purchase was in March which went smoothly but i tried to buy some titles over the weekend and was declined even before payment stage.  Anyone experienced otherwise?

I think for some albums there is this restriction.

I actually selected titles i previously bought and they were now restricted. So i dropped them a note to ask if this was new. They replied to say that restrictions have always been in place for Sg and they did not know how i managed to buy them previously.  Im sure there are ways to get around this, like via a VPN but im wondering if others are experiencing this now as well.

slave8: I have always "experienced" restrictions with buying their music, and know that you can get away with it using VPN. Fact is, this happens with many sites that are aggregators of music (not just own-label), since the licensor may have only given them the license to sell in a limited territory.
