From the manual pg 182, it states that pre amp mode is for:
Connects all speakers by using an external power amplifier and uses this unit as a preamplifier.

I think it's when u are on full external amplification.

My bad, i just saw that u are using 2 channels of internal amplification and not on full external. In that case, let audyssey auto detect or if I'm not wrong, there is a custom mode to assign as u prefer.  :) Sorry for missing that out earlier.

I only have experience with X7200WA...IIRC there is a Amp Assign and there is also a Main speaker assignment of some sort. A picture speaks a thousand words and in this case, the speaker layout/diagram will change as you cycle through the various Amp Assign modes. The options given by you is limited and there must be a segment where you can get the Main Speaker assignment to be Front which connects the front channel PRE-OUT to an external power amplifier (in this case your Emotiva XPA 5). There should be a "Discrete 7.1 or 9.1" of some sort...if none, then I will choose to let Audyssey do the self-detection. The reason why I am not familiar is because this model of yours (4520CI) is the one that was released before Object-based audio (Dolby Atmos and DTS:X) hit the market.

the more I keep reading the more I keep scratching my head... What does external amplification hv to do with AI room correction?
When external amp engaged for amplification, it's just an external device to amplify the AI tone for AI device to capture nia right?
