I need help from a Momitsu V880 owner
« on: June 23, 2004, 10:43 »
Yes, shi*ty isn't it?  Having purchased a Samsung HD938 and then someone telling you that the Momitsu is FREELY available in Singapore, the following day?

Yes, I been down to FastLogic and seen the demo...on a Infocus 5700 / Momitsu and I find the picture quality inferior compared to my Sony HS20 / Samsung 938 on DVI out.

Now, I am so bloodly curious, can some kind Momitsu owner help me out....can I offer you a ride to my home with your player and do a A-B compare with my Samsung thru my projector?

Thanks!

Yes, thank you!!

Anyway, after that Demo at Fastlogic, it is a real relief to get home and watch teh same DVD "Die Another Day" to know you still have a superior picture.  Now all I need to do is to A-B it with a Momitsu at my home, JonLee, you got one?

Fastlogic is hardly the ideal place to demo a pj since there is so much ambient light.
I have a momitsu player and won't mind doing a A-B. Just IM me.

Samsung uses DCDi on DVI, Momitsu does not..

Though I don't own the Momitsu, but am using the Skyworth HVD3050. both using the same sigma chip. When compare to the Nintaus 9796 (DCDi), it's very obvious the Nintaus has better picture quality on the AE100.  I think  momitsu would benefit for those using HD PJ with 720p and above, becoz of its upscaling.

The Samsung 938 is an excellent DVD player and comparable to the Momitsu in performance except in one relatively minor area - black crush i.e., since it uses the PC DVI standard, it simply does not pass the deeper levels of black and such is visible in very dark movies. Other than that, it lacks the Momitsu's zoom, which is very useful for letterbox widescreen movies (as opposed to anamorphic widescreen). To compensate, it has a FAR better remote than the Momitsu and generally operates much more smoothly. For example, I typically have to press buttons on the Momitsu more than once to get things working. Lastly, the Momitsu supports custom DVI resolutions, so you can get 1:1 mapping with most projectors. However, I have done comparisons between 720p and a 1:1 mapping on my NEC HT-1100 and there really is no visible difference when watching a movie. Also, I think desray found it incompatible with one of his projectors (there is a thread on why he sold his 938). So relax and enjoy your 938, it is not inferior to the Momitsu,

Thanks for the reassurance!

Tonight we will see how the Samsung fare with the Momitsu.  I will post the findings tomorrow.

My thanks to Muscular27 for his help....it going to take great efforts on his part.

Momitsu has got its own issues, and the samsung counterpart also has got its own set of problems.

Neither of them are ideal, in fact far from ideal.

The main reason why the momitsu is more popular is simply because of its ability to tweak.

BTW Jag, have you put in the new Momitsu firmware? Don't seem to notice any difference, but its nice that when you turn if off, it doesn't just say "OFF" on the display ;D

The new firmware 1.1.2 didn't do much to awe us...it just fixed the VFD Power status display...

I remember the new firmware allows to have finer contrast/brightness/saturation settings.

This is finer adjustment steps are very important for video calibration that this addition stands out in the latest firmware update.

Mascular 27 from Xtremeplace Place has kindly come over my place with my Momitsu to A-B against the Samsung HD938.

We carried out a calibration with the Aria DVD...:-

Momitsu V880 - Brightness -43

Samsung HD938 - Brightness -53.

"Spider Man"

Very dark, good movie to show what they meant by "Black Crush" in the AVS forum.  As Spiderman swings from building to building in the dark, there is hardly any details in the drak shadows...just pitch black.  Unfortunately, the Momitsu is unable to play this disk due to "region protection".  Mascular27 told me that this is for most Columbia DVD and would need a special key sequence to overcome this.

"2002 New Year Concert - Vienna"

Yes detailed picture from Momitsu but the Samsung seems to have a little more detail.  The suit on Mr Osawa looks darker on the Samsung but lacks the grayscale shades presented by the Momitsu.  Overall, at least to me, the Samsung looks more detailed and more colourful especially in the scene with frontal view of the orchestra with all the foowers at the sides.

"Seabiscuit" & "5th Element" - Superbit.

Same greyscale problem with the Samsung...dark scenes with shadows are pitch black whereas the Momitsu show detail within the shadows.  Strong colours, sharp details on facial shots on both players.

For the rest of the night, I went thru many DVDs and found the Samsung picture to be completely acceptable.

Thanks to Muscular27 for putting me at ease...I am keeping my Samsung until September when Sony will release the HDMI DVD player...

I have just ordered the new SONY TA-DA9000ES.... ;D

RCE?  Momitsu cannot resolve this out of the box?
