Title: Need help with Yamaha RX-V430 receiver speaker binding posts
Post by: ks on January 20, 2006, 23:19
Had this receiver for a while liao and having been clipping the speaker cables to the speaker posts behind.

Now trying to by proper banana plugs to terminate cables but find that the binding post's size is smaller than the std banana plugs.

Is there this kind of smaller-than-banana-plug connector?

i think the banana plug hole is er, plugged - on Yamaha receivers. you gotta use a small knife or something prise the center plug out to be able to put in your banana plug

Hi , you are like me , got my yammy amp and found that the hole too small went back to the shop and look for smaller banana plug and realise that need to get any flat head (test pen/screw driver) to open it.

Using pliers, flat head screw drivers, pen knife and the plastic centre plug just wun come out!!
It seems that that piece of plastic plug is moulded to the base plastic cover.

Hiya KS,

Actually I have posted a solution for  this sometime back which by the way I learned from here.

For your benefit, here it is again...
first get a small screw, one of those for wood with a sharp point , then screw this in about 1/2 to one turn, then use a plier to pull the screw head out, if you do it right,  the plastic piece will come out together with the screw. Then repeat with the others...
Viola virgin hole ready for your bananas

Regards.

When u said screw in 1/2-1 turn, u mean screwing into the clip itself or to the side of the plastic?

U have a pic to show me the back of the receive after this treatment?

Now im not sure if u guys mean removing just the round cap, or removing the whole unit of spring clip.

just the round caps

Even if i were able to take up the smaller round plastic, i dun think it will dun anywhere like those round binding posts

To start of with, the 430's clip is squarish.

ks, could it be that the RX-V430 (http://www.yamaha.co.jp/english/product/av/pdfs/moreinfo/rxv430.pdf) is using spring clips for speaker terminals. in this case you cannot use banana plugs

(image here (http://www.yamaha.ca/av/Images/receivers/back_panels/RXV430B_back_panel.jpg))

instead you can use bare wires, or pins like these

Dang.. we all think that it's a simple case of removing the plastic cap while in fact the terminal cannot accept banana plug at all..... ::)

Just out of curiosity, what problem do you have with using bare wires?

well, for one, most of us - me included - assumed that the RX-Vnnn line of Yamaha receivers would use 5-way binding posts for the speaker terminals (these look like Synthesis' pictures)

secondly, it is a well known quirk of Yamaha's to cover these with a cap when they ship it out of the factory, to prevent cockroaches laying eggs inside, i presume. apparently no one else does it.

so when you said Yamaha RX-V430 no one checked out the picture of the backside... until you said 'square'

you can get the connectors from LHS, or SLS or wherever - i use bare wires for my spring clips on the XR25 though.

Just out of curiosity, what problem do you have with using bare wires?

1) I dun think that there can be a good connection of a contact point of the clip on a small portion of the barewire. But perhaps for a budget sub, yamaha never tot end users would try using banana plugs or spades for connection, like in normal seperate amp binding posts.

2) Just gotten 3 sets bananaplug-terminated 1810s, each with 2 conductors crimped into a banana plug. If I were to remove the plug and connect it via the default clips, im not sure if i can get a fit it in at all.

Sigh...looks like all efforts gone to waste :(

Feel sorry for all that effort. However, think that you should try with bare wires first. If you feel that you are not satisfied with sound after a couple of weeks (and this is due to wires) then you can try with the plugs.

Use bare wires. IMHO, it is as good, if not better than banana plugs or whatever. ;D
