Hi Desray & DH ,

Thanks for the info in the x12000 H model and LK990 already send the info to Singapore Benq Team . they will get back to me .

The body of 3 models ( x12000 , x12000 H & LK990) are identical with 14 segment Glass lens in all of them .
Actually i am also keen to know not just the performance but the physical throw distance end to end for ease installation .

Please keep add on the names for those who wants to see and have a social gathering ( so i can arrange enough refreshment and some snacks ) Thanks

Not quite...

The chassis is the same BUT

This is the lens array on the LK990

Thanks DH . LK990 is Laser unlike the x12000 H which is LED Lamp .

So may be the throw distance might be different between the two .

Hopefully can get more info from Benq Singapore soon .

Yes, it’s important to get the technical specs right for which model since BenQ is lesser known these days to the projector users. I recalled back then, Jag was the first to own a BenQ DLP 8700 projector which cost him a lot.

Hi Des , in my office unit have a Demo space first enclose and light control Projection and Audio with a nice powerful sub on demo . ( 5.1 set up ) My new improve Cyrus Motorize screen Standard fiberglass based and Tap tension type . ( 4 people seatings )

The other side will be the larger space for the viewing the 4k projector the model x12000 and those who are keen can stay back to look at the entry Benq 1700 4k projector . No sound just 4k projection image .

The visual side is huge enough to host 25 to 30 seatings . ( refreshments are served in this room )

Lets see how many more will put in the list.  I will also control the number of packs so it will be by invitation only . So will require all the Guess in the list to give me the Hp contact so I can send the maps and invitations .

Alf, 7pm is too late for me...I've noticed that you moved the timing quite a few times from 5.30pm to 7pm and I am fine with that but 7pm is a bit too late for me as I need to rush to somewhere else. So I'll probably skip this demo session. Next time perhaps...I'm sure it will be a great sharing session among the rest of the XP members.

Have fun guys!  :)

Thanks again for setting up this session. 7pm is too late for me, I can't make it for the session at this time too.
I suggest timing in noon or late noon will be good for future sessions.

Ok, I will try to make it but it will be kind of rush for me... :)

Agreed with Kaydee6, during weekends, family time is quite precious for most members here...only during mid day - 12pm - 5pm will be a more ideal time slot for most.

Thanks Alf for being a wonderful host and providing some delicious food. It was an interesting session... if one stayed to the end.

Alf had two Benq projectors to display. The first one was a HUGE 2-year old model. Fed the latest Avengers Infinity War 4K Blu Ray in a room with a shiny wood floor and a brightly-lit EXIT sign, and projected to a large 135 inch screen, the picture was very washed out and dull, and skin tones were off, which led Desray to start fiddling with the adjustments and Francis saying that it couldn't compare to his LCD TV ;D I was scratching my head because the picture was dim, lacked contrast and wasn't much better than my Sony HW40 which has a badly damaged light engine! Furthermore, the price was $7K+ the price of a pretty decent 4K projector these days. But little did we know that Alf had a trick up his sleeve  ;D ;D ;D

After seeing the first projector, Alf led the slightly disillusioned crowd to the next room, which was light controlled, where there was a tiny projector (about 1/5th the size of the previous one) projecting a 1080p war movie onto a 100 inch screen. Quality was pretty typical for a current generation single chip DLP projector. Skin tones were fine, but blacks were OK, but no where close to JVC or even Sony's SXRD series.

We watched the war movie for awhile, then Alf revealed his little secret for the night.  ;D ;D The tiny projector was actually BenQ's latest 4K DLP projector (to be released soon) and cost.... S$2,699. He hooked it up to the 4K Blu Ray player and BOOM, it transformed the 100 inch screen to a nice, contrasty, sharp 4K movie display. I was impressed. Cheap 4K has come a long way. For S$2,699 and a large white wall (best to get one of Alf's Cyrus screens though) you can get a sharp contrasty HDR picture, that would cost you about S$30,000+ if you bought a TV. The only way previously to get a decent 4K projector at this price was to ship one via Amazon to Singapore and have no warranty. At S$2,699, we finally have a good low priced local set that has full warranty and support. It's reasonably bright and should be able to handle about 120 inches or so in a reasonably light controlled room by my guesstimate. I'm sure BenQ will sell a truckload of these.

On another note, it was nice seeing Desray and Jag again after about 15 years. It was really hard recognizing them after all this time and I hope to catch up in the not too distant future.

Tks Alf for hosting the demo. Nice to meet up with old and new  Xtremeplace members!
The new BenQ DLP 4k / HDR / P3 / Full Glass lens under SDG $ 2.5k is pretty good! Overall nice color tone and natural looking.

Sexy8

Unfortunately I did not stay on for the 2nd demo...Is it confirm that the 2nd BenQ projector is indeed using full "glass lens"? If true, then the sub-$3K price is definitely a good buy. Well done BenQ!

Yep was great catching up with some old friends and putting some faces to some old names too...and a couple younger ones too.

Thanks Alf and Darren too for making it happen. 4K looks like being an affordable option in the not to distant future...for my old 1080P replacement anyway.

This is my first time meeting you Wiz...and yes, you are right, 4K projector (pseudo or native 4K) will become more ubiquitous from here forward. The only inherent limitation that makes 4K "fly" in the projection system right now is the existing technology - DLP and LCD...for instance, latency, black levels, rainbow effects etc.

Thanks Alfie for, hosting the session some more with free makan  ;D, I'd gotten some good pointers from the sharing towards my 1st projector(ie. there could be light reflection from the floor one should avoid)

Great meeting fellow XP folks esp the long termer and gurus of XP. Thumbs up for the continuous sharing

Thanks Alf, this was the first event am participating.Nice to meet you all.

This event gave me some good info which will help me to buy one.. BenQ W2700 is the value for money. I think for a home user 100" is a sweet size where the new 4K projectors can fill with it's 8M pixel..

Thanks Alfie for putting this together. Really appreciate all that had turned up. Had many valuable takeaways, esp from Desray.

Hero was actually the new model which most were adequately pleased with. GG for the W11000H setup but i think Alfie had achieved what he wanted to show. One, rainbow effects had been eliminated greatly from the past, though i would have to admit it may still be visible to a very very minute group of people. but at least most, if not all didnt witness any that night. Two, his bags of tricks (i bet all would agree  ;) )

Let this be a start to many more to come. I always love community coming together to share, laugh and be passionate in what we hold dear. And also the hearty greetings "oh hi, so you are "so & so"...". It's like homecoming. LOVE IT.

alrity folks , take care and see you soon.

Wah DH , you are fast on the up date . This model will fit a lot of those who has the mid throw lens projector like Sony / JVC / Epson/ Optoma . It is also a bit more expensive but under the current brand prices .

The specs is better and have more feature on this model w5700  ( same full glass lens ) . It will be arriving to Singapore between May or June .

On plans is will do the pre view launch at my place for xtremplace Kakis .

I will not be able to tell , this was not physically on is lens movement positioning .

We have to certain , the calculation on PJC is all base on lens to projection image and not PJ with body and HDMI distance .

Make sure BenQ do a proper calibration this time and get more "vibrant" titles to showcase the HDR.

Yah ! Vincent got it spot on , I did a physical test on the benq 2700  for both the distance mounting and type colour setting possibilities .

It is true in regards to the distance mounting , the benq 2700 is mend for those small space and hall application it will mounted in the middle of the room or just before your seating area . During that night the colour adjustment on HDR setting is also limited for on the prototype unit we have seen . Overall I have manage set the colour much better for deeper blacks and colour saturation ( movies demo Lone Survival , Great Wall n John Wick ) On setting “Standard” out of the box if you set on cinema mode it does very well on SDR via Netflix for TV series  . ( tested during Benq launch for gamers in last week  )

So for those who has a larger room or need longer throw is best to wait for the next demo on Benq 5700 model .

Hopefully Benq Singapore is able to get hold of the benq 5700 soon for xtremplace member exclusive preview again . I will be starting a thread soon on the demo so can stagers timing for those who are interested .

Hi guys the unit is already in my hands , it is for me to test and evaluation before is send off to some other location on permanent install and review .

Out of the box it is very impressive , plug in different source from SDR 2k / 4k / 4k HDR . Test the distance , check the lens clarity to maximum wide and tele . The lens shift is just great for both Horizontal & Vertical for those have the centralize type and off set projector . All are manual to minimize cost and break down I guess .
The body is wider fill up later ........

It will still need to do some adjustment and setting to get the best out of the unit .

Major difference from all their HT model this 5700 will meet those have like better blacks , sharpness ( 4k /UHD ) HDRs is fantastic .

Too be continue ...

It’s mentioned the sets come factory calibrated, so this could literally save us hours of calibration work, probably just one or two minor tweaks and done,  I suppose

A center len featured in a projector is ALWAYS a welcome sight...this is what I'll called good engineering design with sense. :) I think W5700 will be a hit! For those who don't wish to wait for the JVC N series should seriously consider this alternative. And I truly hope that BenQ has make some redesign to their IRIS mechanism to make it work more seamlessly to make it "less distracting" in this new model.  :D

Alf, pls pls pls ensure it is properly calibrated before the demo session. Don't rush it like last session. Take your time and when you satisfied, then roll out the invitation.

Desray bro u made a very good point. This is really an superb engineering design with PJ lens Center position.

When i first mounted my BenQ PJ lens is not center, the lens is exactly to the left.
Adjusting image is an issue..  rely hard
Even PJ handyman also don't know loll..

So potential PJ buyers, do mount with LENs projecting towards center of your screen.
cheers:)

Actually off-center projector len design not only has an impact on flexibility with placement - especially true when there is literally no len-shift feature for some of the low to mid-tiered projectors but it also has some undesirable effects on the overall image quality where you will see uneven sharpness in certain parts of the image due to the curvature of the lens...things only make worse if the len is not all-glass type. Just remember that the focal len and the len assembly on a projection system can be more complex than we think...to reduce any form of chromatic aberration cause by refraction of light passing through the different focal len of the glass requires some good glass len assembly. Hence whenever possible, try not to have the len skewed too far right or left...slight off-center is fine but center is still the most optimum.

That is WHY most flagship projector len design is center instead of off-center... :)

Come! The more the merrier!  Would be nice to have you around and share your personal views on this since u are already an owner of the N7, it will be a bit unfair because we will be having the best source material on display

I’m very keen too, getting ready for 150”... this will be the final piece of equipment needed in my set up

Hopefully it doesn’t disappoint, still waiting patiently...

Calibration is for colour accuracy. I believe for EOTF and Gamma targets you still need to calibrate this , including brightness, contrast etc

The specs state that it is capable of 1800 ANSI lumens. How many nits is that equivalent to?

Is it 500+ nits? Saw this article with a table conversion

1800 lumens is achieved with the max brightness setting. This is usually at the expense of correct colors. The true lumens for cinematic color, especially with the D3 filter in place will be much lower. This projector would be suitable for a light controlled environment.

Heads Up on the source material to be used, Tekno3D. This source file will have an edge over the conventional bluray or UHD Disk. I will bring another copy for test, its beautiul. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1, its done using Dynamic HDR-X

Extract from Team Tekno3D

ADVANCED PQ HDR GRADING:

Our transfer is mapped into the original DCI source colors and placed into the BT. 2020 color range.

This way you make sure you watch the original colors into your HDR TV.

HDR grade performed from the original source to obtain all exposures and best possible high dynamic range video.

When studios do a basic HDR grade they lack most HDR benefits. Our Advanced PQ HDR grading adds this to the mix:

- Realistic Specular Lighting

- Realistic Reflections

- Huge LOG Range details ( More details than present in 1000 or 4000 nit grades thanks to the new room in the PQ gamma )

- Amplified HDR Contrast "Pop" Effect

- Super Whites

- Super detailed black zones

Thanks for the source bro . I am very sure that there will be no HT projector range from 1800 to 2200 ansi lumen can do the 1000 to 4000 nits . Recommendation and calculation
Is more for LCD , LED, and laser type TV .

Yes Alf, I concur. None will hit these type of levels , but there is difference when tone mapping is superior.

When grading in full range you are able to see every single detail among with a higher accuracy in color expansion and HDR contrast.
The limited range grading makes use of a high contrast but lacks details in the blacks.
Full range not only fixes details in the blacks by keeping the contrast effect but it's also a lot more accurate in color gamut.
Studios most do limited. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 UHD Disc is a limited range grading that's why it crushes details in dark scenes

The blacks are stunning on the OLED

Patiently waiting for your demo announcement date . You must check out for yourself the quality of the source file , brilliant stuff

Ill bring this version together with Aquaman. The other one that is solid is Spiderman Into the Spiderverse! All 3 very very good picture quality

Hi Alf , confirmed my attendance for the event on Saturday, I’ll be there early.

Standby a hard disc too, I’ll copy two movies for you, aquaman and Guardians of the galaxy, both specially tone mapped movie files, in HDR-X full version

Anyone who has the disc, u can test this against the Tekno3d files and compare as well.

See you for the event !

Alf, what sound system will you be hooking up for the demo?

It was suppose to be POLK audio speakers but too tie up with meetings and site management . Can’t decide what to do . It is just tough lah .

Thanks Alf for hosting this session.

After viewing this projector in action, I have to say the BenQ did some fantastic work in this latest iteration.

Good work BenQ!!!

Very good PJ! Thanks Alf for hosting...

I’ll be considering as well. I think could have been better if HDR was calibrated, but can’t fault the overall quality, very clear, black panther was good.

I believe if proper calibration is done, will be the PJ to beat at this price point

Cheers ! Will get in touch soon , thanks again!

Nice meeting everyone too

Alf,

Thanks for the demo. It's an intriguing projector.
I do not see rainbow which is good. And, motion is smooth.
I like the color but Epson does have brighter colors. Black levels is as expected of the DLP, not LCD or LCOS black however DLP have move up its game in this area.
I still see iris pumping as scene brightness changes which I do not see on my Epson. Possibly fix through firmware.
Sharpness is exceptional which is better than 3 panels LCD or LCOS projectors. This is expected from a single chip DLP.
HDR will definitely look good with slight tweak. Overall, I don't think there is competition at this price for a 4K HDR projector. I would buy this if I do not have the Epson now.

After Alf done a proper calibration on the projector the picture quality improves tremendously compared to out of the box.

The colour gets richer and more vibrant after switching to UHD disc. The day &
night scene from the movie, Great Wall has the WOW factor for me - beautiful colours.

I’m very impressed with the performance of 5700 regardless of price but at this price range it’s a no brainer.

Was never a fan of BenQ but after this demo my view has changed. Well done BenQ.

5700 is definitely at the top of my list when my JVC projector dies.

Glad to hear that. And yes, I have to agree with everyone that the price to performance ratio is indeed attractive.

One noticeable key improvement for me is the Iris which is less aggressive now. Transition from bright to dark intrascenes  still can spot some Iris movement if we look hard but still BenQ did quite a marvellous job this time compared to its previous models. Iris is a must if we want to get more dynamic contrast out of each scene and DLP till this demo has not being a plus performer, not just for BenQ but other brands like Optoma as well. Hence the improvement is noticeable.

For colours, there is this distinct DLP colours that is inimitable. For those playing with projectors long enough can straight away tell this is a DLP Projector (no need to see whether you are susceptible to RBE). The OOTB colors really need proper calibration and dial in, especially for HDR content. For REC709 (SDR), this Projector did reasonably well but still need some refinement for better blacks and shadow details. The gamma setting is locked which I do not know why as such I can’t really comment much on the gamma which in a way directly affects other aspects of the picture quality like black levels, shadow details and even dynamic contrast when DI is engaged. One can only make an educated guess that it is the default 2.2. If so, it can definitely go higher to achieve deeper blacks (in DLP standard).

For the BenQ engineering team, all I have to say is focus on proper calibration of colors and unlock the gamma setting. I have a feeling that the gamma is locked for specific factory picture profile setting like cinema or reference mode but it can be adjusted under a custom or user mode setting. If this is so, then I’m fine with it.

I did not have the chance to try out the 3D but I can only imagine that it will do just fine based on my previous positive encounter with DLP 3D using DLPLink.

That’s my initial impression after viewing some of the content for coming to an 1 hr or so.

Hi everyone!

Don't usually post anything (Just lurk and read for knowledge) but would like to take this chance to publicly thank Alf for his time and great service!

I visited him off-peak as my office is really nearby and decided on the W5700 after a nice chit chat and demo session with my friend. Service was top notch. Overall price-point + Warranty period was very very appealing and I pulled the trigger straight after the session.

I am replacing my Sony HW40ES  (was having lines appearing) and I must say the improvement is great. One thing I agree on which with kaydee6 is that the Iris does pump and 'blink' so I turned it off for now. Other than that given my HDMI cables were older (was stuck at 4k 30HZ max), I had to upgrade and getting electrician to re-pull fiber ones so that can enjoy 4k 60HZ / HDR etc etc.

All in all I want to thank Alf and this forum again, else I probably would have gotten the Sony VPL-VW270 (which I also auditioned elsewhere) at double the price.

Cheers  ;D

I was there today when ronildoq collecting his set. As usual Alf is a great host. Overall the Benq 5700 is very nice, sharp and punchy color though for black and shadow details I still prefer my JVC. So it is a tough decision whether to switch JVC to the Benq, it also depend whether I can offload my JVC successfully.

I have no qualms about the set, I can tell from the quality of the video processor and how crisp the image and best of all no eye fatigue, perfect and has got that warm d65 temp.. Coming from OLED, the black levels surpassed my expectations on the BenQ.

my main motivation was:

1.  pricing
2.  I had factored that  if the PJ can hit 70% and above the quality of the OLED, then it made sense to go for a bigger screen.

I am very happy it met my expectations. It was clear and crisp and colour was beautiful too. Just need some basic calibration on HDR and I believe this unit will shine. At least on the grayscale, white balance  and colours. I’m all set for 135” with AT screen !

Very very hard to beat at this price, really good deal.

Anyone into 4K HDR PJ should seriously look at this unit, worth the time. Calibration is still required to bring out the best from the unit. I’ll be sharing my journey soon, so hope that everyone will benefit

I passed for a number reasons...one being the throw distance is not long enough for my setup at 4.7 lens to screen for 96" and unless I go very large I need something more comparable to the Panny AE2000 zoom capabilities. MAYBE MIGHT JUST DO IT WITH A BIT OF PRECISE MEASURING

Another being that my XMC-1 needs to upgrade for 4K and atmos

Hi Guys ,

Thanks for the turn up also great too see different faces this time round , it also great to know you guys know to do calibration and what to look out for in a good set up .

Again the cheeky side of me has made the Demo session a bit more interesting , as the last time I show case a 1080p up scale ( 3 years old MIC BD player ) projected  image on the Benq W 2700.

Let me share what was my intend ( w5700 Demo ) , I have only calibrated the 1080p source  ( Fast and Furious ) the mode setting on it was CINEMA 709 . the rest was left un touch like D -CINEMA and HDR 10. This was to show that even the Projector is Pre Calibrated you will still require to do a bit touch up or adjustment in your HT environment .

In between the break I did a fast calibration just to view some decent HDRs Images .

Continue session we played source via Hardisk compliment of Ronildoq . The Benq 5700 has 2 HDMI both port is HTPC 2.2 n USB 3.0 media reader.  It was plug in via USB under media selection input we played the Black Panter , Aquama  ( 4K HDRs ) most can see the IRIS movement especially on the dark scene . That got me thinking could it be when it is not in the HDMI port that causes it . ( When the PJ detect 4K disk with HDR it will go automatically HDR-10 mode ) So I played the same content Black Panter from my UHD  BD player it was in HDR 10 and the IRIS was lock to off , and there is no more movement .

The other discovery from more time playing with the 5700 PJ , the terms are different on how they put the mode .
Cinema REC 709 is mainly for 1080p source / D-Cinema ( HLG ) for 4k content without HDR / HDR- 10 auto detect.
Both Cinema & D-Cinema you have option to switch it off . Obviously there is a few more settings to switch around to tune to your preference . Like lamp mode , HDR brightness , those using Spyder Or x Rite there is also more intense  mode to adjust .( Colour Management / Colour Temperature )

The 5700 is not the same throw distance vs 2700, as for those who don't have sufficient throw distance or shorter room space the 2700 likely to fit your application . Where else the 5700 has more flexibility like the old Panasonic, SONY , JVC and Epson these are mid throw lens .

For those wants to pull the trigger of intend to up grade please call me or whats app so that you can get faster response on the options . ( HP 9765 0195 ) Alf

Thanks for those who has gotten the units hope my findings are beneficial to you guys . Appreciate the support .

Alf, I suspect the dynamic iris in HDR mode  performs some type of tone mapping feature that dims the display when subtitles come on. (White)

This is similar to the OLED feature “Dynamic Contrast” , when set to Low or on, it will use the TV’s internal tone mapping function.

Turning the dynamic iris on should improve contrast and likely triggering the internal tone mapping processing from the BenQ. One way to circumvent the issue is to switch off subtitles or use a darker coloured subtitle, like gray. For me when I watch a movie, I’ll switch off subtitles because the vocals and dialogue is clear. So no issues. I’ll have this dynamic iris on.

But when watching documentary material with kids or animation, then I’ll need the subtitles on! I want the kids to read along the lines while watching .

Is there only like one HDR10 mode ?

Haven’t unboxed my set, haven’t got a  screen, so can’t help much for now

Might just make 4.7M throw and 96" screen based on https://projectorcalculator.benq.com (https://projectorcalculator.benq.com) but moving to a bigger screen will be ideal in the longer term.

Yes sir it has been a Long time , how is the Cyrus Phantom Grey screen working out for you ?

This 4k HDMI cable is a tricky thing most of them can do 4k 30hz only . If you are going for full HDR out with 4:4:4 best bet is fiber HDMI . It is not about if it is Native 4K or not bro , is about handling the signal . You must see for yourself on the DLP chip rendering or processing to obtain 4K the sharpness of it .

Hope that helps

Ok I found it , it’s under the manual that we can configure for “user defined” viewing modes

Also noticed that gamma is lock, and there is a separate isf mode to unlock and open up a whole new custom settings that would normally be used by a certified isf calibrator

Does anyone know the default password on the 5700 to unlock this setting ?

No idea, i know pj is very hard to sell, gotta take a big hit. Thats why i have been patiently waiting for the right one at the right price. This one met my expectations and within the price range. So no issues. if i use it for 3 years, it would have been fully depreciated by then, anything sold after the 3 years useful life is a plus, warranty is also 3 years....

Hi Ronildoq ,

Having a larger screen will be great , since you have the PJ just try out on the desire size for several time . For AT screen there is two type of material the microperf with polyvinyl base and acoustic weaved (2 type hi resolution surface
and better audio pass thru ) Do go and check it out .

Took the plunge last night with the Benq 5700 as well.. Finally found a 4K PJ that can fit into my room situation.  Impressed with the sharpness of the image and thankfully no Rainbow issue for me given that this will be my first DLP.  My thanks to Alfie for his time and patience yesterday in answering all my questions.  Now to patiently wait till the end of the month for salvation to arrive.

Hi Alf

Should i decide on the 5700,

MLP 3.5m to screen,
5700 mount at back of the room about 6m to a 120inch screen, will there be issues??

Is there a screen for use with 5700(for movies) and a ust PJ(for pc/gaming)?

Is there a screen for use with 5700(for movies) and a ust PJ(for pc/gaming)?

The Benq 5700 can surely do the size at that distance .

These will depend on the ambient light condition on PC /Gaming mode ( lighted light or some lights on / day time or night )  , watching movies light control condition and overall room colour and set up ( like it like movie theatre smooth hi resolution images )  There is few types of screen material so all depends on what is your expectation .

They do have those all in one type which can do both ALR screen ( smooth type ) it will have some trade off in terms of screen projected surface ( some sparklies , speckles or even striations ) which you might experience . This are inherent on the screen to produce the projected effects . ( I used these screen for commercial projects )
The other ALR are specifics for the UST Projector they have a optical finish surface to be able to have retro reflected light to viewers or user . Surface is made for mainly UST or can use table TOP placement but result is not as good as what is made for . If you were to use a mounted projector and want hi resolution on these screen it will not give you the desire result .

Until I know how the set up looks like and what the user expectation I will not be able to recommend the right type of screens to use .

Welcome back after such a long hiatus. Get back to home theatre again to reenergise. Start with this new BenQ 4K DLP Projector and slowly upgrade as you go along.

Netflix recently launched a new manga like series on Ultraman (your fave iconic character). But I have a feeling you won’t like it. LoL

It was great to see you jeffong ( since my Stewart days.. yah ) , now if you want to change the current screen material  (Stewart Fire Hawk G2 , give them a call Asia office to fine out what is the options and also who can help you to get it in and do replacement service )

I will suggest a smoother finish material to give you better 4k / UHD experience . On the tone or shade I suggest you get the lighter grey for your fixed screen ( I have just assemble on show case and match with the w5700 ) . As it will provide a better contrast and not too dark grey ( White looks to bluish ) it will also not going to be oversaturated . It also can do very good 3D not that most of us going to watch but options is there .

You can make the time to come and look at the two tone , tap tension white finish and light grey fixed on stand .
Since you are waiting for the w5700 to arrive .

Quick question for the W5700 owners. Have you played "Grand Tour" from Amazon Prime on the W5700. On my W2700, the colors from the episode where they drive European cars in China seems exceptionally red. Viewing on my OLED, it has a slight red cast, but on the W2700, Jeremy Clarkson's face is so red that he looks drunk while driving around Kunming. So far, this is the only title where BenQ's processing seems to have gone off on the deep end. Might be errors in the signal that it can't interpret, whereas the OLED is able to get around it.

Doesn't sound normal.

Is grand tour in HDR or SDR?

What picture mode did u use on the pj?

Are there any contrast/ colour enhancement settings that are enabled?

I think something I discovered recently (apologies if I missed any discussion on this), which is a plus for the W5700, is that BenQ developed a unique color coating technology for their color wheel to allow for 100% of the P3 Color Gamut without a filter. This has never been done before with a DLP or LCD. On my W2700, when I engage the wide gamut filter, it lowers the lumens by about 40% (from the 2000 lumens spec). Since the W5700 is able to do 100% of P3 without a filter, HDR signals can be run at the full lumen output and are brighter. The only downside compared to the W2700 is that when not showing HDR content, the W2700 is slightly brighter. The W5700 also therefore beats the new Epson 5050b, which also requires turning on a wide gamut filter to achieve 100% of P3 and reducing lumens by 40% although the Epson has leading black levels for a Batcave.

Grandtour is in 4K HDR. The PJ has only one mode for HDR and everything was set to default. I tried fiddling with the color and white balance, and it improved a bit, but just a bit.

during the demo, I feel the out of the box colors for HDR is quite off. So maybe that's why. But SDR looked quite good out of the box.

does the pj allow greyscale calibration on HDR? If yes, maybe try a simple 2pt greyscale calibration and adjust the white point for the HDR to see if it helps, if there are such controls. (But i'm not familiar what calibration controls are available for HDR on the 5700....)

I didn't know that the new W5700 is able to do P3 at 100% without any color filter?! That's unbelievable! Ad I'm also surprised to learn the 40% reduction in light output for W2700 when P3 filter is engaged...Interesting find.

The W2700 demo was definitely not optimal. The colors are very accurate and spectacular when the room is very dark. I really enjoyed rewatching Crazy Rich Asians and Hunter Killer in HDR. Truly spectacular colors.

The W2700 allows for complete ISF calibration so I'd be surprised if the greyscale calibration isn't there. PM me if you want a private look.

The most command question ask by user or new HT set up , which BENQ model should they buy ?

I always will suggest to potential user what are they most concern about .

A) Cost /Budget
B) Looks of unit and colour
C) Room dimension L x B x H
D) Screen size
E) Ambient Light condition
F) Application ( how long usage )
G) Require Ease of replacement ?
H) Type of mounting pole location / load bearing .
I) Type of source played Media stream / Netflix / Apple or purist BD/UHD Play (Disk )
J) Performance and Quality is it important ?
K) Advantage on PJ vs TV .
L) Minister of Home affair approval .

I always say we are blessed on having a HT & Movies hobby vs Party and Drinking right ..!!!

Just had my Benq 5700 delivered and installed by Alfie.. Kudos for the great service rendered even though we got into a pickle trying to figure out why the 4k signal was not getting through to the PJ.  Finally realized that the culprit is my ageing Denon 4520 receiver which is not HDCP 2.2 compliant :P.  In the end had to pull out additional HDMI cable to connect my Samsung 4k player directly to the PJ and walah a beautiful sight greeted my eyes.  Even my kids could immediately tell the significant difference between the old AE7K and the new Benq.  Will let the PJ burn-in over the next couple of days before doing any further calibration.  No regrets on this purchase although now I have to source for a new receiver which means an unexpected hole in my wallet. Haiz..

I think it goes as a package, everything will have to change, cables won’t cost a lot, decent ones can do the job, PJ is reasonably priced , if sceeen is good, that doesn’t have to change, AVR, plenty in the market that can do hdmi 2.0, or some 4K players can do direct

If you can sell old gear, can fetch something there

It’s probably worth considering the move as a lot of content is now in HDR Atmos, even the old movies like Rambo, Jurassic trilogy, Batman, toy story trilogy, (I can watch this many times), is really enjoyable , gaming, Xbox playstation etc etc...

It’s not really a necessity, more to when, it’s only a question of time... defer if funds don’t permit, go ahead if it does... straight forward decision

However, if the wait is for 8k, 12k, 16k material or hardware, then the wait is never ending...

In short.... my favourite quote of all time....

Just sharing purpose
I did encountered continuous challenging handshake issue too before when i connect
my receiver HDMI Main Out to my 1080P PJ HDMI Main input via my media player\bluray player to AVR's HDMI source

I also did the same test whereby media player or Bluray player plug in straight to PJ and it worked without issue.

The turn around solution is to set my media player display resolution output to 1080p\24hz and it work eventually lol.

You might want to check the player display output resolution\frequency settings.  Not sure if it help.

Heheh.. don't need to do that since the Sammy comes with dual HDMI output.  It's only my AppleTV 4K have to be configured to 1080P SDR for it to work properly.  However, I just read that Denon has launched the new AVR-X6500H receiver in Hong Kong which is equipped with 11 channel amplification and some HDMI 2.1 support (ie. eARC and ALLM).  I'm hoping that this is already available in Singapore market and is Made in Japan model.  This way, I can move my 7200WA to my projector room and get the X6500H for my living room setup and retire my old AVR-2309 which is being used to provide 2-channel amplications for 2 of my ATMOS ceiling speakers.

Heheh.. don't need to do that since the Sammy comes with dual HDMI output. This way, I can move my 7200WA to my projector room and get the X6500H for my living room setup and retire my old AVR-2309 which is being used to provide 2-channel amplications for 2 of my ATMOS ceiling speakers.

oops.  cool!

At current moment you are still able to watch from your 4k UHD player . I think for now you should replace your current projection screen. It should be your first priory.

You could have asked Alfie to run a 2nd HDMI cable to the 2nd input of your projector and connect your Apple TV directly and then send the audio back from the projector via the TOSLINK. I did that. Unfortunately, it comes back only in 2 channel PCM, but at least I get 4K HDR video with the Apple TV 4K. The AVR seems to like the surround information in that signal, so everything sounds great and rumbles.

That's is one of the ways to do it , alternative a good 4k HDMI switcher also can ...those selling AVRs and Amp will be up set .

I somehow managed to get the AppleTV 4K to work in 4K 24hz SDR resolution. This allows me to at least playback YouTube and Netflix content in 4K without HDR for now. Guess this will suffice until the new updated Denon 8500WA is released and then I can do some switching around with my living room ATMOS setup getting the 8500WA, move the current 7200WA to my projector room, lelong the 4520 and gracefully let the 29xx receiver retire.

Thus far I have been loving the sharpness the Benq provides which unfortunately is affected if the lens shift is lowered to the max. The bottom 3rd of the screen will look slightly fuzzy when dealing with text. So that’s something folks may want to take note if you have a high shelf placement like mine.

Jeff, 4K 24Hz SDR will transfer fine on a HDMI 1.4 cable. You only need the faster cable for 4K/60Hz SDR 4:4:4 or 4K/60Hz HDR 4:2:0

Alife hung my projector from the ceiling at the optimal point so there is minimal lens shift. Its quite far down...

Mine is on a custom built shelving which is slightly high up and won’t have as much flexibility compared to your ceiling mount.

Hi Jeff you can switch position of shelf PJ at bottom shelf and AVR on the upper shelf that will help not to maximize the down lens shift .

Hmm.. A bit challenging as the bottom shelf has more power points available to connect all the barang barang compared to the top shelf.

Anyone able to share their settings on the W5700?

I’m still reading through hundreds of post on The BenQ 5700 on avs forum, this is probably worth checking out... but in French, try Google translate

https://www.passionhomecinema.fr/blog/index.php/15/04/2019/test-benq-w5700-lavis-de-gregory/

Brightness 45 with contrast 55 seems like a nice combination

Reading threads spanning hundreds of pages on a new toy is half the fun. Enjoy it while it last :)

Yes very true. It is actually my first PJ, I understand the trade offs coming from using an OLED. The real reason for my upgrade, however , lies with the experience that comes with it

This being my first pj, I’ve learnt a great deal on ambient light control, lumens vs luminance, brightness, contrast,  DLP vs lens, LCOS etc etc . The experience is fun, great and I enjoy it. This is what I enjoy most in HT, the experience, and then I share that experience with members here...

It’s been an excellent journey for me, from subs, to REW to acoustics with SMT, room EQ and now PJ, the experience is priceless. As with gears and equipment, the happiness when we have them is good, but it evaporates over time, the journey and experience however, lingers in our memories and to me, that’s what matters most, this for me, is the true essence of enjoyment

Huh? Don’t need to I suppose, there have been reports that some users are experiencing grinding noise when dynamic iris is engaged, I don’t have such issues.

There were some suspicion that those who ceiling mount them faced this issue

I’ve updated to the new firmware vide a USB thumb drive, it didn’t erase the factory calibrated settings , but reset the general settings

So far using dynamic iris set to high, brilliant colour on, WCG off, 4k enhancer off , so far so good, loving it, the tone mapping feature is very good on this BenQ

We are talking about 45% drop in light output when filter is engaged, I don’t think it’s worth sacrificing that for WCG

Do you have your pj ceiling mount ? I don’t hear any iris motor moving / grinding sound, some reported that the noise appeared after 40hrs of use.... so I haven’t clocked in 40hrs... will continue to monitor

I have the iris on for cinema mode and HDR10 , u can see the pic quality on black levels, not bad, I like what I saw...

Of course I’m contented and have no intention of comparing it to OLED black levels , but I can say that it can hit 70% of what the OLED can produce . I do however, compare for details on the OLED vs this W5700, and I can safely say that never once was I ever disappointed , details were ever present and I don’t miss the OLED

It’s that good for the price !

Yes sir that is for the USA market or that batch  , in Asia mounting is the same for ceiling mount but we have much lower ceiling height compare to the overseas houses which have higher ceiling.

In different regent has different issue I will not compare or base reference on one country people faces , which will we also experience.

As I have shared base on the all the unit sold by me , I do not have any complain or issue with the loud sound like what you share via you tube .

He he ... may be because we are the later batch on the units that is why . As this was launch much later compare to the bigger market country .  All I can say lucky us .

Again if there is such issue I am sure our member here will be sharing the issue in these forum .

Yes sir spot on again , base on what I have done in the past there were a lot of Brand’s and model of Projector bought in from overseas .

Some do ask for installation service and adjustment , we do notice there is some difference or funny looking which we don’t see in local set .

I Guess that’s is why there price difference on the same products on the same selling web page . ( don’t know what is the origin of it and history )

Yah ..better be save than sorry I Guess , re sending it back and get it fixed and logistics are just not worth it .

A big thank you for all the warm support, compliments as well as feedback. Regards the recent discussion on firmware update, allow me to share some update

Yes the new firmware for W5700 is available now; and Alfie is collating the name list to do upgrade as we speak. Among other enhancements, the new firmware adds 2.4:1 and 16:9 anamorphic mode to Aspect ratio options, improve Pixel enhancer and color performance, allow Iris adjustment – Off/Low/Mid/High etc.

As this is the 1st firmware update, we will need to update both the MStar and TI firmware. While some of you are already aware BenQ Australia had released a video to illustrate how you can upgrade the firmware on your own, this upgrade only upgrades the MStar firmware via USB. TI firmware will require to do via RS232. For this, we advocate that our service colleagues perform the firmware upgrade, as there are several SOPs to observe, less you damage the main board if miss out certain steps or what not.

Just a heads up, after we complete the firmware upgrade, the new version will not be reflected on the OSD. Instead you can only access it via the factory mode settings. We will indicate the new firmware version on the service report once we do the upgrade for you.

The YouTube video on the noise from Iris might well be an isolated case, but nonetheless, please do not hesitate to revert if you experience such abnormality.

Last but not least, for W2700, there is no new firmware as of now.

Thank you, and may your movie screening with BenQ continues  ;)

Just a heads up, after we complete the firmware upgrade, the new version will not be reflected on the OSD. Instead you can only access it via the factory mode settings. We will indicate the new firmware version on the service report once we do the upgrade for you.

The YouTube video on the noise from Iris might well be an isolated case, but nonetheless, please do not hesitate to revert if you experience such abnormality.

Last but not least, for W2700, there is no new firmware as of now.

Thank you, and may your movie screening with BenQ continues  ;)

Thumbs up for the excellent support from Alf and BenQ Singapore... :)

Thanks Darren for the awesome support from BenQ. I guess the Ti firmware is what the US people mentioned about the projector having to go back to the service center for an iris update.

As for the 2700 firmware, I note that there are already two firmware update for it in the USA. It allows iris adjustment and corrects some issues with a green tint on WCG mode as well as the split screen. Can we do the update ourselves?

Here is how it sound when dynamic iris is engaged on some sets, some grinding noise, if this is happening to your unit, then u need to send it back to BenQ

http://www.youtube.com/v/-5SujUfktAE&fs=1

Wow! First time watching this clip.
Sounds really bad.

Mine makes some noise when the scene changes but definitely not like that.

Trying to share here without uploading to YouTube but seems like I can only upload photos here. Not video clips...

This is the problem with using Dynamic IRIS (DI)...even flagship projectors like JVC can also encounter such issue albeit not so loud but definitely if close enough to your sitting position, you can still hear. As DI is a "mechanism" with moving parts, in due course, it will only get worse. Even for those w/o "this" issue now, it will happen to you one day through normal wear and tear. Fortunately, BenQ has a very substantial warranty coverage which should be able to cover this issue if it ever happen.

Remember no equipment (these days and age) can last forever...including those laser projector which claim to maintenance free. The greatest culprit to equipment prematurely failing us is our humid weather.

Hi all,

for W2700, yes there's a new firmware for upgrade, and you can perform it yourself. Pardon me earlier on.

1. Prepare USB thumbdrive, formatted in FAT32 format.
2. Download firmware from link (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1HHojXOhJTQGKkaksmoCOT4tyX8q3cuYB) to USB thumbdrive, and unzip it as “update_signed.zip”
3. Turn on projector, and after start up, insert USB thumbdrive in USB3.0 port in projector.
4. Go to OSD > System Setup: Advanced > Firmware Upgrade > OK > Yes
5. In the process of upgrading, the bottom half of the OSD may be hidden, or you may see BenQ Logo in white. It is normal.
6. During firmware upgrade process, PLEASE KEEP PROJECTOR POWER TURNED ON.
7. After upgrade is done, it will show "Upgraded to 0.0.44; Upgrade Successful".
8. You can also watch the online tutorial on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9MNz3yK1iI&feature=youtu.be

Fantastic service there from local BenQ!

Got mine updated by BenQ, both iris firmware and overall firmware updates completed. The iris update should improve contrast. But so far very happy with the calibrated PJ on SDR, Very very good!

One thing to note is to take/jot down your settings, after the upgrade it will be gone. Isf calibrated settings were all back to default. So it might be worth noting it down before the upgrade. Luckily I have that. However the colours and default factory calibrated settings on REc709 and D cinema were intact.

Will have a quick check again on picture quality when time permits, so far so good, played some YouTube stuff all good

Another thing noted is that when HDR is not set to auto, apparently one can use the rest of the other modes available. So when set to HDR auto, it will use only a specific HDR10 picture mode that is grayed out. So gonna try to turn it off, see if I can use other picture modes. Apparently it is also different from the d cinema settings on SDR

PS:/ big thank you to Alf for arranging! Thanks a lot Alf, great service , much appreciated for all the efforts

Some reviews comparing it with LCOS projector and the confirmation that this w5700 is no slouch for its price to performance ratio

http://www.youtube.com/v/DUOCccWlbOc&fs=1

The only gripe i have with this PJ is the quality of the tone mapping. But I cannot expect it to rival the OLED LG tv at home , the HDR is in a different league on flat panels

In coming years, evaluation for a PJ with good tone mapping implementation is critical to deciding whether or not one goes for it

Using the Panasonic UB820 has made a lot of UHD movies watchable. Too bad it doesn’t pass through/process another input like my media player.

Yes the other thing is it doesn’t support a lot of formats vide it’s USB port, no dtsx or Atmos passthrough vide USB, that was a hindrance for me , for disc playback it’s good

Ok clarified last night on the above. Not setting HDR to “auto” mode will strip the metadata , and display switches to REC709. No longer in REC2020 mode, tone  mapping is turned off

So HDR have to be set to “auto”, and there is only one picture  mode, ie  HDR10

Didn’t notice any significant improvement on contrast after the dynamic iris update. Maybe there is improvement, but I am not able to tell clearly between the past firmware version vs the upgraded firmware.

Most importantly, all is working well after the upgrade , touch wood so far so good

Very much inclined to fiddle with brightness and HDR brightness settings again after the iris update , it appears brightness set to 45 is quite nice in HDR mode and HDR brightness set at +1 seems to be clipping white , pictures looking slightly washed out at higher nits

I had a penny 420 Australia set, sold it , didn’t work out for me, as I needed USB playback for MKV / TS flies in Atmos/ dtsx

Apparently the sets from japan are different, they have better specs and components

Some 3D disc arrived from amazon , bought on prime day cheap... mostly documentary stuff.

One of my favourites, though, is the legends of the Guardian , owls of gahoole, very good 3D

We watched it for like 20mins, didn’t want to expose the kids too much to 3D stuff, but they have been pestering me.

Boy, it’s amazing on 3D on the 135”, I can see strands of feathers from the owls, unbelievable 3D quality from the BenQ. My boy says he can catch the feathers !

It’s my first watching 3D on the big 135” screen. Previously watching it on the tv, not really the same. Size matters again here !

Very immersive 3D experience, lotsa flight details from the sound track and vocals tracking on screen action, mesmerising 3D experience.

Am not really a fan of 3D, but for the first time in years, opinion has now changed after watching it on the BenQ

Ps:// 3D mode is also calibrated at factory, nice ! Pic quality is very very sharp and detailed. But it’s in rec709, next up will be alita, 4k HDR in 3D

Yes...generally speaking, DLP produces the best 3D imagery. While you maybe late into the 3D game (which is actually a good thing now that many kinks of the past that plagued 3D had been ironed out), it’s never too late to enjoy good 3D titles in the comfort of your home.

Glad to see u are loving your projector so much these days.

Oh, so one of the strengths of DLP is 3D. I didn’t even bother to read on 3D stuff, as wasn’t interested from the beginning. But it’s really nice, wasn’t expecting this type of quality. Caught me by surprise

It’s a treat for those who love 3D, u will enjoy it on the BenQ 5700!

Ps:// coming from someone who doesn’t like 3D at all

The settings are very simple and not complex but yet allow you to have variation on setting Rec 709 , moving forward like HLG settings to HDRs .

The best you are able to set to low lamp like eco or smart eco depending on the pre settings .
