Very nice system bro and a nice room too.
Any reason for choose Emotiva amps to partner the fantastic 8805 instead of Parasound or Rotel, which might be more musical?

Hope you have some open house in November... cheers

Dear XP bros,

djblackfm has been an extremely good pal of mine. Got to know him unexpectedly via carousell, and from there we hit it off to became very good friends!

This is actually my humble little home and djblackfm has been extremely helpful in assisting to coordinate these sessions, plus some other stuffs which i really really appreciate a lot!

He is friendly, willing to share knowledge, and most important, he did it without expecting anything in return, which i wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU here! Thanks bro for the support most of the time when i needed help! He really live up to being "If we dont share or exchange knowledge we wont grow & understand. Be more open, Share & Learn." lol

Am actually a member in XP for quite sometime already but not been very active, until recently where i started my small online business named Ovation United (https://www.facebook.com/OvationUnited/), bringing AV gears to my friends. Some XPrians has already bought something from me already :), This is where my supporting pal here, plus another member which i did not catch his nick (sorry), urges me to be active all over again (which i am trying to :P) here in XP, and if able to, bring some awesome gears (like the AC Infinity Aircom T10) to the bros here.

So here i am, sharing my rigs, the purpose is for me to know more, learn more, understand more and more importantly know more good pals like djblackfm. Any comments, ideas, etc are all welcome. Be open, share, learn and have fun!

In response to Doggie Howser and about Marantz AV8805, well i was a AVR-X7200WA user for almost 4 years. which i personally think the 7200 was bright. I wasn't using Emotiva at that time, purely integrated AMP. The concept of separates intrigued me when i first saw djblackfm's setup last time and got poisoned. Lol... i was still using KEF R series at that time... and i've hence moved to Polk Audio since 6 months ago. Again thanks to my good pal, djblackfm haha.

In response to petetherock about Marantz AV8805 and emotiva, well... im more of an all rounder person, in both music and movies... plus, im also kind of oddball, you can say i like to try different combi, in order to know more and share with my pal... i have tried different pairing, Def Tech BP series with Mcintosh, Marantz Polk, Def Tech Demand Series with Denon etc etc... and majority of time sound reproduced are different lol..... i have not yet visit any of XPrians open house before and i most glad to be invited for one, if time allows of course... as i feel bad leaving my 2 young kids in care by my wife alone :P

As compared to 8805, i went full XLR connection this time instead of RCA from 7200...due to my smart home smart switches, XLR solved the static sound which caused by one of my smart switch, which of course am delighted. :)

Not comparing other AVRs apart from my 7200, in my opinion, the reproduction of the sound from 8805 is a little on the warm side which soothing to my ears now. The sound is accurate and clear (i guess it depends on source as well). With 8AK4490 32-bit stereo DACs across all channels, it doesn't lose out to my ES9028 DAC Raspberry Pie player either, just saying... I enjoyed movies and musics more than i enjoyed with 7200 now, maybe due to they are separates? or speaker change perhaps? In anyway, i enjoy more now than my previous rig, at least i don't feel fatigue when listening or watching movies long hours.

I am using 13.2 Auro 3D setup now, at times i will switch between Atmos, DTSX and Auro 3D using Atmos underlying format. Again, my personal opinion, i kind of liked Auro more, perhaps for the VOG. For Atmos listeners, it may sound otherwise though.. no choice, due to my speakers placement limitation, i guess it my best position. I did heed another XP bro's advice to bring my surround speakers higher by few inches, damn im glad i heed his advice and it sound whole lot nicer to me.

I guess i've typed long enough else you guys will start sleeping, but hey, i welcome this open house to XPrians here to share or exchange knowledge, and to grow, to understand, and to learn from each other. Comparison is inevitable i guess but lets all do it in a healthy way :) I just want to make more friends and learn more from you guys here heh heh.. Different listeners, different taste, different opinions...there is no best rigs or setup so to speak, more importantly is how the knowledge shared can make full use of our current rigs to maximize its potential 8)

PS: i still have my pair of KEF R700 around, hence we can really hear the difference between American designed Speakers VS England designed Speakers. For now, in order not to confuse on timing and availability, djblackfm will still be the POC, until the 1st 2 sessions are over, i will take over personally if i have the time. :)

Looking forward to my first sharing session with the bros here! ;)

Hiiii,
Im staying in 5 room flat, the rigs are in my living room. I'm more available during Sundays noon between 2 to 4pm. After that i will be bringing my monsters to visit my parents. Hence 2 to 4 will be the best time, maybe stretch a little to 430pm.

I am also open for Friday evening between 7pm to 9pm this week. Occasionally Friday evening is good, more quiet...provided my kids dont clown around at home. :D

Next month first 2 weekends is doable, will be overseas thereafter :)

Glad you intro yourself..
And I am much more gladful that i bought three T10s from you.. with your excellent after sales service responding immediately to my place when one of the adapter fails, i am sure you will make more frens here bro..
Btw, these T10s really helps my system.. my AVR remains cool after hours of movie play..
Hope to be able to join other bros to your rig one day when I am free.. (if my CEO allow.. lol..)

Hi bro,
I noticed you are an ONKYO receiver user and have heard the sound signature of Flagship Marantz Processor coupled with Emotiva.
so would like to hear your comment.

I was using one of flagship ONKYO from TX-NR model that's why I wonder whether house power (dynamic) of ONKYO is still in RZ model.
Won't mind to visit you so I can hear the power of combination setup of Flagship Onkyo AV Network Receiver RZ-3100 11.2
Rythmik FV15HP (it is a 'beast') and Definitive Technology PROCINEMA SERIES

 :)

Very nice, thanks for sharing.

You mentioned about the difference between British and American sound, between the kef R700 and the Polk Audio..

Possible to elaborate a bit more on the sound and character differences?

Hope to visit one of these days.

Thanks!

Impression:
Very cosy living envirionment. The back 2 DIY SUBS are MASSIVEeeeeeeeeeeee. 
Sitting sofa is in right position MLP

My review running though below track in sequence:

Music ( Not sure what track lol ) :
UK KEF : The KEF pair are smooth natural singers
US  Polk Audio: Bass notes are coming out via the Polk Audio drivers.
Somehow , find the PA bright suits HT more as the bass run muzzled throughout the notes

Here come the real “ HT “ beast test
I am not a really a “ graph” person.
As we know watching a movie, need to have Punch, Kick butt or chest hit slam. POWERR.

Movies:
13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi ( ATMOS)
Somehow don’t feel the “ punch’ of the gunshots
Bass felt good with “ butt” feel and

John Wick Part 1 ( Somehow its play at Dolby TruHD)
Gun shots are dynamics power. The full dynamics are rally Blown out  solid 

Fury (ATMOS) My favoruite Demo scene
Felt quite disappointed as the tank cannons firing from left to right or right to left are not distinictive enough. No separation.
Tank shots have no “ much punch ass” feel shots

12 STRONG ( Thor Lead actor)
The Mortar scene shooting front to back awesome scene.
Skate can respond on this as he mentioned in Cinema –
the BACK LOADING Mortor punch
are awesomeeee.
Somehow I feel the surrounds engaging are not engaging to their max.
Same as Fury effect.

My personal feel after audit:
I relly impressed by the BUILT quality of the massive 2 subs behind – Ported 18incher? 
Not sure if no atmos heights or no due to the surround KEFs at Front Heights and Back Heights ,
I find that the surrounds are not really full utilitzed in a way, no separtion distiniction.
Side Polk Audio SL \SR are bigger bookshelfs though.
The Emotiva with Marantz 8805 combo are awesome setup.
Howoever, I am not sure due to the Audssey or due to the speakers range or Marantz,
the Emotiva did provide the power which should up the extra DB but somehow still don’t feel the enough dynamics.
Surrounds wise not sure if KEFs are enagaging . may Polk Audio surrounds will excel more?

Maybe I am used to my “ Onkyo” RZ signature” whereby dynamics and surrounds are fully engaging.

Room for Improvement:
Suggest plan for 4 fasle Ceiling ATMOS Heights
Place 1 subwoofer ( as front firing) in front stage for “ more punch” in Front
Remain 1 Subwoofer behind sofa

Overall abovie is just my feel and input, open for sharing and improvement.
Definitely an enjoyable sharing sessions and really I respect the 2 gentleman Hosts super thumbs up!:)
Thanks a lot.

Nice summing up of your experience. I really truly hope that for each house visit to members place to experience their setup can also come up with something like this.

I m very excited to see and read for the first time “actual user experience” being shared here. This is where we finally can have a meaningful comparisons of how each brand, be it speakers, AVRs and its accompanying calibration algorithm, subwoofers etc.

Keep it coming...but make sure it must be an honest reviews without fear of antagoning anyone.

Awesome! Let me adjust the EQ a little more for the punch when I have time.

I will see if I can change the height to Polk as well heh heh. A more powerful one compare to KEF.

How I wish I could have the false ceiling too. It's the only reason why my setup is according to Auro3D/DTSX.

Awesome review. Will borrow your ears again after the minor adjustments kekeke

You are more than welcome to drop by again since we staying not far from one another 😁

My impression is really very nice setup. Based on the 2 songs I heard, I feel that polkaudio is brighter and the bass extension is more dynamic. As for the kef, it is warmer. The bass is lesser as compared to polkaudio. Both are great speakers, its really depend on each preference of sound.

For the movie part: Yes 13 hour is less dynamic than John wick 2. I believed is the source of the material where this morning, I re watch these 2 movies again at my hm. And from the -20 gain from my avr for both movies, John wick 2 actually sounded more dynamic and forceful.

For 12 strong, it is really a good movie to showcase his equipment. I can hear the rockets flying from left to right and back and front. Feel exactly like watching in the cinema. The bass is really good.

For fury like what rock123 has mentioned, the effect is not much as compared to 12 strong. I mean the cannon flying around.

Lastly for the movie ready player one. Bass is good but cannot really hear the surrounding effect. Maybe the movie was just played for a short while.

Overall impression very good and I still need to learn from everyone to improve my HT experience, therefore unable to comment much on what are the things need to improve. Maybe watching all the movies using physical discs can have a better experience as it is uncompressed instead of downloading files. This is what I think, hopefully never anger anyone regarding to this. Thanks.

Upon hearing Bro BadEnglish's advice, did some measurements using guided lasers to more accurately ascertaining the MLP for my fronts.

what i did was i moved the fonts a little further away from the walls to tame the bass, by that small amount of of movement (just inches ), the result was astonishing and i'm glad i spent the time!!

Am a very vocal and jazz person when comes to listening to music.. now the vocalist sounded more inline with the instruments, vocalist is singing and at the same time instruments hovers across the room just like a curve ball into the ear drum.

I moved the fronts as far as WAF limits the position, I believe this Polk of mine can achieve more if it isn't placed in the corners especially the left speaker.

Apology for the lousy photos...want to share this is how i do it. I took a cardboard (yes i am the cardboard) and draw the center line on it, and fire the laser to find the center, the rest is just measurements after measurements, listen and listen until the result being achieved.

Congratulations, glad you found the benefits of placement positioning tweaks.

One consideration, especially with assymmetrical room conditions, one side wall, one side open etc. Not necessarily both side symmetrical toe in angle for best soundstage and image.

Can experiment with different toe in angles between left and right speakers, and listen for the best sound. Cheers!

I did the speaker placement before this. Just that a little stubborn did not read deep enough how much to toe in according to my pair.. so when BadEnglish dropped by, he mentioned try to follow whatever is stated, if it's toed in better make sure it is toed in to acheive optimum result.

I was not using lasers at the first place. Only used now when I managed to get one. 😁

Will try to do other position when have the time again. Those are huge and heavy, moving them alone with rubber footing on my vinyl flooring is no joke.

Hi there. The acoustic panel comes with self adhesive back. Alternatively can use double sided tapes.

Nice, I think it's time for me to try. Have been apprehensive for fear of it coming off and hit my ceiling fan.

Oh dont worry. it is pretty light actually. more tapes will do if still feel paranoid. but in my opinion, not too many pieces as it will totally kill the dynamics, esp on the higher freqs.

Nice and cosy hall setup! What adhesive do you use for the ceiling acoustic panels?
If you stay in older housing with rough and uneven ceiling, you may consider using construction adhesive like Maxbond/Liquid Nails. My Ecophon panels have haven't fallen off since ~10yr ago.

Thank you rock123 for the comments

After hearing multiple feedbacks and sharing for knowledge, I am very glad that I can apply the knowledge, feedbacks and comments from the people that visited me.

Hopefully I can hear the comments from White Sox, djblackfm and rest of the people whom visited me the 2nd time upon hearing the changes after the 1st.

Oh definitely as what Rock123 mention bass is now more solid with much more impact feel...
The 2 channel music listening experience is very good after taking advise from Bad English on speaker placing. I can hear sound running round my head just for the stereo imaging.
The side surround have swift it position and height. MLP position also shifted by around 0.5meter forward This also improve the over all immersive experience when watching movie

Last week I have a privilege to audit Winthur new setup with 2 additional 10" DIY Subs. This was my 3rd visit to his place...
I remember my 2nd visit to his place with some re-align of speaker placement plus some tweaking on 2 18" subs the bass i feel can go much deeper and with lot of rumbling... his surround sound & bass had definitely improve a lot after my first visit.

This time with just 2 additional 10" subs... he has bring his bass to another level... this time the bass not only go deep but also play cleaner and tighter plus the rumbling feel.... this kind of movie experience is where you don't get it from the cinema... 8)
For those members who had visit him once should pay him a visit again.
Thanks Winthur, i enjoy every moment of your demo session.
Cheer!

Thanks Kennyluck2000 for the kind words. Could not have done it without the comments, feedbacks, constant questioning and answers in order to reach where it is today.

not only to kennyluck2000, but also to other members who had spent precious time in visiting my humble nest for audit.

still a little bit more to go before doing another Open house again after the arrival of diffuser panels arrive :)

Thanks all once again

yah agree with you Kenny bro.

Today happen to visit Winthur the 3rd time in a row. Got some solid stuff from him.

My Jaws drop.... The " presence " is really good.
The up front Dual 10inchers mid range drivers did perform with solid good quality bass
My thoughts as below:

1. The Twin 10 inchers sound natural and " felt " punch. :)
2.Have never heard such a dual combination DIY 10inchers
which Mids bass up to par or even > than some 12" subs out there.
3. The back 2 18 DIY inchers will rumble with Wind. :)
4. Driven by Model NX6000d Behringer power amp ( Channel A &B ) , they look really outstanding.

Really good job Winthur. V enjoyable session thumbs up.

Outstanding Amp :)
Saw on web this power amplifier delivers 3,000 watts/channel into 4 ohms or 1,600 watts/channel into 8 ohms,
giving you plenty of headroom to work with.

Ok... i finally had time to do calibration last night using the Marantz MM8077 power amplifier. I bought this power amp due to the following reason:

1. Testing, since i've seen quite a lot of review that this power amp is match make with marantz AVP and since i am using one, i would like to give it a try

2. Sound signature, to prove that is it indeed "heavenly match"

3. Additional channel, the more the merrier even though not using, who know i may need in future? :P

The specs can be found here https://www.us.marantz.com/us/products/pages/ProductDetails.aspx?CatId=avseparates&ProductId=MM8077

The channels are pretty pack to one another to be honest. As compared to the previous emotiva XPA 6 Gen 3 which i am using which are pretty spaced out. The Marantz has a left right switch vs a flip switch on the emotiva for balance and unbalance input.

The binding post seems a bit flimsy but it does the work if you using the banana plugs which i believe most of us do.

It has a little cooling fan on the right which i am not sure if it is even activated, since i am using the AC infinity T10, the temperature does not go as high as emotiva is what i notice despite playing at high volume.

The sound (Audyssey with dynamic vol and dynamic EQ off, marantz power amp for all floor speakers and emotiva for all heights speakers):
In my personal opinion, the sound is not as harsh when playing loud. using SPL meter playing at 80 to 85db ish, the volume from my marantz 8805 is around -14 to -13...which is already pretty loud.

For Movies, what amaze me is despite playing loud, the clarity, dynamics of high and low and the surrounds sounded liquid smooth and clear. Tested incredible hulk and john wicked 2, the sound is so clear and smooth, it is precise and i trust that at certain scene, some details i do noticed with the marantz but not the emotiva...or maybe it's just me for not noticing.... example, you can actually hear something when reeves is walking in the tunnel before meeting the lady whom showed the middle finger before the gun fight starts.

For music, all i can say is it's undeniably excellent! I can say they (MM8077 and 8805) is made for each other! May be there are better power amp out there which i've not heard or tested in my environment before but i can say that for now using 8077, when playing vocals and musical, maaaaan it just sound so pleasing and good! it's buttery smooth, no fatigue at all, listening at -23db is just right for my room. some tracks which i've played became even more lively, music sounded coming from surround sides and overhead but its actually stereo. For the first time ever i swear my Mrs actually commented about my gears saying "how come this track sounded so nice now?" We sat on the couch and listened for about 3 hours until she fell asleep.

I am not sure if emotiva sounded distorted to me when playing high volume but after a movie with emotiva at -15db and music at -22db, it does gives a little fatigue at the end. Do note that my dynamic EQ and vol is off.

During the audessey calibration pulse sound (pew pew pew), i do noticed that the pulse marantz gaves is like "smooth, taking its time, no hurry, soft," kind of feeling. The emotiva is like "com'on let me give all of it, i have lots to give, chiong arrrrr" kind of feeling LOL. But overall after the audyssey, all volume definitely balance out, which eases my worries for a bit. My guess is since emotiva is a USA machine, it should be more daring in producing anything.

Its not that emotiva is not good, emotiva is definitely showing that "look, give it to me and i can do more" kind of feel. i guess my preference just changed from hearing all action and loud, to hearing the details but at the same time loud. i enjoy more details now despite at low or loud volume. :) The watts does plays a part i agree but after calculating the distance, the 1w/1m and sencitivity of my speakers, it may not require so much of a power per channel at the end of the day. Depending at what is being output at the time of moment also.

I'm doing little change, tweaks here and there... as soon as i am done, i hope to invite forum members to my place for some refreshments and enjoy the movie + music at the same time.
