https://www.apple.com/apple-events/september-2018/

Apple has announced its next Special Event will be 12th September, 10 am PDT in Cupertino, California. We have all the details of what you can expect Apple to unveil, and the different events Apple holds throughout the year.

It has been confirmed, Apple's next major iPhone will be unveiled Wednesday September 12th, 10 am PDT (6pm in the UK). The event will take place at the Steve Jobs Theater at the Apple HQ in Cupertino, Californa. You can watch the live stream (or add it to your calendar for now) here.

Apple is also likely to let the audience know when the next version of the Mac and iOS operating systems will be available for download.

The rumours surrounding the date and time of this Apple Special Event were originally reported by the French Radio Station, Europe 1, that claims it got the information from two sources.

The difficulty is predicting what Apple will call the next iPhone (or iPhones). Below we will run through the products we expect to see at the event, you can read more about what to expect in our: What will Apple announce on 12 September story.

iPhone X Plus, 9, Xi, 11, or something else...
There are lots of rumours pointing to an iPhone X Plus - expected to launch at the September event. It's likely that this will be a next generation of the iPhone X, launched alongside the new version of that phone, perhaps the iPhone Xi. We may also see an iPhone 9 (or iPhone 9 Plus).

Now may be the time it ditches the numbers and refers to the iPhone simply as iPhone and iPhone Plus. What ever happens, it looks like all the new phones will have Face ID - and no home button.

Some rumours suggest that Apple will announce three new phones in 2018 - two high-end X models with OLED screens, and one cheaper model with a LCD-TFT display. All three models are said to have all-screen displays (although we assume the notch will remain).

Read all the news about the new iPhone for 2018 here.

iPad Pro
Apple updated the iPad back in the Spring, but it's now nearly a year since the iPad Pro was last updated. All the rumours point to Apple updating the iPad Pro at its September event, with the new model using a Face ID camera rather than Touch ID - and hence having no Home button. You can expect smaller bezels and the 10.5in version may get an 11in screen without a significant change in dimensions.

Read all about the iPad Pro rumours here.

iOS 12 & macOS 14
The iPhone usually shares its September event with announcements of when the latest version of iOS (in this case iOS 12) and macOS (Mojave) will become available to the public in their final form, having been announced earlier in the year at WWDC 2018.

Apple Watch
September is also a good time for Apple Watch updates, and in September 2017 we saw the announcement of the Apple Watch Series 3 with LTE.

After watching the event...abit uninspiring perhaps due to the leaks before the event. The better value proposition will be the iPhone X [R]...Liquid Retina but still a LCD variant. lower dpi and a single camera len. BUT hardware wise, pretty much the same as its more expensive siblings - the iPhone XS and Max.

AND LASTLY...Sigh, the notch is still there. :(

Hmmm ok, must be very unimportant for them. When I see the Apple website, under "Here's what we announced", it only lists the phones and watch.  :/

Same price discount as your subscription. Refer to note 9 price it should be about $200 discount for the cheapest plan. Nowadays people use $20 mysim plan because overall it's cheaper.

Yup, the same analogy with buying a $2k amplifier vs ones who spend $10k. Between those who buy a $5k 4K projector and those who spend $25K on the JVC.

It's targeting at Chinese Market. A status symbol never mind even if the specs lose out to some high specs Andriod phones. It's like comparing FM Acoustic amp and Emotiva amp.

But frankly, after using various Oneplus, Samsung Note 8, I still find iPhone a good phone. It is intuitive and does not crash easily when reading PDFs and Straits Times app and the firmware update is consistent.

It used to be spending more than $1k becomes a taboo for a smartphone a few years back... But now, a smartphone with no change in software as in iOS (literally since its inception almost 2 decades ago) but with incremental improvements made to taking better selfies, battery life of say between half and hour to 1hr + (without telling u the actual battery capacity) and top it up with a bigger screen to boot plus my favorite design of the year (the notch for Face ID as the best and only solution to secure your phone and make purchases as opposed to other forms of biometric feature like fingerprint)... iPhone has now ascend from an essential item to a luxurious piece of handheld "jewelery". This is not ranting but merely stating the way iPhone paved the way for smartphone industry and how it impacted us. I have to say it bluntly that we are part of the equation that leads to such preposterous pricing within a short span of 2 to 3 yrs... No matter what Apple churn out, we deemed it to be the best smartphone that anyone can ask for even though deep down we as consumers know very well that the price to feature and performance rarely make it justifiable... But we still choose to do it nonetheless.

We have to accept that this will probably be the trend from henceforth.

I switched to the Note 8 when it came out because I was tired of Apple. Android is not perfect either, I am plagued by battery life issues and it takes more work to tweak the system. But at least it feels more fresh and I still have my precious headphone jack.

I switch over to iPhone many years ago due to security too. Having too many apps that deals with credit card info and bank acct makes me think twice before going back to android.
Coming from a iPhone X user, there are no push factor to upgrade to Xs model. Will wait for another cycle for iPhone 11 to launch.

Don't play games on my phone. Generally apps are more buggy and slow on the Android. Have used Samsung, Acer and Xiaomi. Samsung is the worse.
Not to mention the above hardwares from fit and finish to durability are just not there compared Apple. My experience with Apple on the router (still using), iphone, ipad, apple watch and apple tv is they just work. Perhaps, I am at point of life where I'm more interested in well built products that just work. Still holding an iphone 7 and am happy with it.

Android till now is ram hungry. Yeah after so many years the OS is still not mature. Need to clear cache and junk once awhile and also restart once a week to clear some glitch. iOS glitch need to wait till the next update so I dun think android is so broken that iOS is the only choice. I am using a Sony btw and the body is covered with gorilla glass therefore no quality or fitment issues. Have used iPhone 3-6 till my wallet protested.

used one of the earlier android phones HTC Desire for 3-4 yrs. Switched to iPhone. Wife bought Samsung Note 2 when I started the iPhone.
Biggest deal breaker of Android : No Software upgrade after 1-2 yrs. and Somehow, the phone experience just nose dives after first few months. Apps are not tuned and nor is the OS. Maybe the newer phones all have fantastic specs etc but in almost every test a highest spec iPhone will blow any android away. Photos have always been better on iPhone until last couple of years when other companies have caught up. No replaceable battery, no problem.no expandable memory, no problem.  support has always been great. and great advantage is that hardware and software is owned by same company. Some things they fix via iOS update and some need hardware like battery replacement.
My wife switched back to iPhone after Samsung Note 2. She is never going back. I showed her Samsung Note 9 spec, and she said, never again. Same for me too.

iPhone just works.

Apple riding on this value proposition for quite some time.

At the same time, they are slowly jacking up ASP at every refresh cycle, therefore earning lots of profits , resulting in good stock price run.

At some point, the ASP may cause the market to shift elsewhere. When? No idea yet...

Enjoy while it lasts

The service charge is like 2/3 of the cost of a new set and that's before parts. Might as well buy a new set if the old one breaks down out of warranty. I think that's what Apple wants consumers to do by charging such high service charges.

Plenty of Apple critics often forget (or intentionally ignore) the fact that the iPhone experience can be had at much lower prices than just the flagship models. The 7s and 8s are still available at much lower prices! The over-1-year-old 8’s A11 Bionic chip + iOS is still faster than Samsuck’s current flagship phone for most applications! Not to mention the build quality of iPhones are so good that even-cheaper 2nd-hand iPhones are extremely popular. All of which transpires as Apple’s global smartphone revenue-share leadership (of well above 80%)! Android may have market share leadership, but Apple continues to be the one making most of the money ;D

Here’s Apple’s current line-up;

But it doesn’t have the A12 chip and the Lytro-like refocusing capability...

It's not Lytro like; it doesn't shift the focal point, merely change depth of field/bokeh (which admittedly others like Samsuck has already done).

Just bought mine and wife's via Singtel (Xs, not Max which I find too big), delivery on Friday.... Bloody Singtel never learns, year after year their system screws up big time when purchasing, took me 40mins to get it done properly.  ::)

Why do you sounds so happy when Apple suck the money from the consumer?

As a consumer, shouldnt we be united to ask Apple stop milking money from our pocket, lower down their phone price to give some value back to the consumer?

I made a mistake getting my X. The only one in stock was the 64GB so I took it.

Big mistake. REALLY REALLY HARD to fit all my junk in 64GB. Even without any music.

The X is still an amazing phone. And iOS 12 really makes the X zip.

So my friend in Apple is checking to see if I can get one of the XS on Friday. 256GB.

I’m not quite sure what you mean… their “register interest” was last Thursday… Singtel-prestige customers were allowed to “pre-order” from 2pm yesterday, which was followed by the actual online purchase slots, mine was a 3pm slot also yesterday.

My friend bought 64GB X on purpose because he calculated it is cheaper than 256GB if he buy 64GB plus iCloud storage which he said the experience is still good.

I don’t see how Cloud storage would be better unless I had unlimited data on the phone.

My biggest culprits are Whatsapp chat groups, emails and photos.

Anyway just upgraded IOS 12 and watchOS 5 yesterday. The X is now zippier than ever before. FaceID also seems snappier. And even my Watch Series 2 feels more responsive.

If I am not wrong, my friend said photo would be stored in icloud but you can still see it in the photo album streaming from iCloud. In this way, it does not take up storage in the phone yet you can use it just like it is in the phone itself.

Well, I look at it this way…

If not for the profits that Apple made from iMacs & Powerbooks pre-2007 which were hugely more expensive than WinTel PCs/Laptops, and iPods that were likewise a lot more expensive than Creative’s and other MP3 players, that Apple poured back into R&D…  We’d all be using these sorts of junk today;

Can't believe I am saying this...I am officially back to iOS again after almost 3 years of not using iPhone. My last iPhone was iPhone 7 Plus...admit I'm a bit not used to iPhone now but within an hour or two, pace finally picked and the familiarity all coming back to me now.

Bought the iPhone Xs Max 64GB since I do not play games or download many apps to play with. Most of my music streamed from apps and I do not subscribe to Apple Music anymore...so 64GB is actually plenty for me.

Still not used to the default Mail app from Apples and have to revert to Inbox from Google's for now...same goes for Google Photos instead of Photos app from Apple. All these little things aside, it is indeed another refreshing feel and look holding a 6.5" iPhone. Strangely enough, it actually feel a lot heavier than my Pixel 2 XL despite the looks...I guess the full glass lamination of the iPhone has to be the attributing factor.

Face ID to unlock the phone is something I really need to get used to. With no fingerprint/ Touch ID and the omission of UnderDisplay (UD) Fingerprint sensor in these new models, it's a pity that there is only one more "secure" way to unlock your phone. But I have to admit, it works flawlessly each time but the fact that I need to swipe up from the bottom of this 6.5" screen to go to the homepage makes my thumb sore a bit. Need to train those memory muscles more.

After playing for a few more hours, I really think that there is a lot of room for improvement for the gesture based navigation. In fact, Apple can take a leaf and learn from Xiaomi MIUI which also feature a gesture based navigation (optional) bit it performed way much better and more intuitive than Apple. For instance, I can't go to the previous screen on say an app or from within a settings page. For some apps, it worked but not consistent as some requires me to scroll up to the top of the page to hit that back button. Even the reachability feature is also non intuitive as it requires some precise finger gesture and location to bring the top half of the screen down. very frustrating...may need to spend more time to get used to it.

Another shocking discovery (at least) for me. To power off the iPhone X series models, you need to invoke 3 step pressing of the <Vol up>, <Vol down> and then press the <Power On/Off> button...and then the Power Off slider will appear. Wow...Apple u r goooooood! Talk about ergonomics and ease of use. Giving up the <Power On/Off> button to make a place for Siri. Brilliant...

This is quite an absurd reason to begin with and I can't believe what you are telling me...FWIW I beg to differ...yesterday, I tried to no avail for nearly 30mins to get my new Apple Watch Series 4 to pair it with my iPhone Xs Max for the first time. Like you, I thought there is literally no need for me reboot or even shutdown the iPhone...on the contrary, I thought the Apple watch is the 'culprit' and it turned out to be the exact opposite and the most annoying part of all,  i kept trying and reset the damn watch for 30mins when I should have just power off and on the iPhone to get it paired in no time. In the end, I chanced upon using the SOS method (pressing the power on/off button and the volume down button for a good 3 secs long, the power off slider appeared for the very first time. I turned it off and then back on...Viola! U know the rest of the story.

For a premium phone that cost more than mid tiered laptop...I expect nothing less from Apple which prides itself as the "trillion company" in its net worth...the iPhone gesture navigation is quite unpolished and dare I say not even as intuitive as Android phone like Google Pixel 2 XL running Oreo and Pie firmware. I can't believe that even my Xiaomi Mi Max 3 gesture based navigation is so much better compared to iPhone X gesture navigation. I still can't believe I actually sold off my Pixel 2 XL. LoL...I sincerely hoped and I am optimistic about it that Apple will make this gesture based navigation better with each iterations.

All is not lost, I'm very happy with the new Apple watch Series 4 performance...it has had improved leaps and bounds when it comes to performance, battery life and Bluetooth connectivity...the animation is also much smoother compared to the last one I used which was the Series 2. I did not try the Series 3 but heard very good reviews...Series 4 did not disappoint me with the latest Watch iOS 5.0. Well done Apple!

Yes, I only learned this ridiculous combo key just to invoke the <Power Off> slider on top of the display. What can be achieved in one easy step becomes using 2 fingers while holding on to a Max sized phone. Think about it...if this is coming from a PRC company...everyone probably talking trash about it but if it is from Apple, it is forgivable? Not in my books.

Bro, u really need to think it through before commenting. Wearing out the button?! What is the purpose of that button if we are not going to use it in moments like shutting down at appropriate times?

BTW I’m not offended by your comments lest you feel that way, I hope this is not a “fan boy” response. I know you in person so I know u know I’m a very reasonable person and I usually speak up for things which I think is not good when it comes to reviewing products I owned.

For me, I m brand agnostic, if Apple did well in certain aspects, I will give credit where it’s due but not otherwise.

Its not a fan boy comment. I do have an old iPhone with semi-responsive button. Especially the round button. Anyway, its a matter of getting use to the new gesture.
The button is there so that there is an alternative way to "talk" to the phone when screen becomes unresponsive.

Yes, I know where you are coming from and not offended at all. I do share your annoy - especially to those not savy ones, hard to do at one go. I'm sharing the possibility by using gesture to work around which I felt is useful. Frankly, I have not used those buttons as before. Nah, I'm not a fanboy but I do like their ecosystem.

I may be wrong but from what I read on Apple, they tend to focus in than out - I don't rule out the possibilities that they might duck all buttons totally.

U are lucky to be back into iPhone with ios12. Otherwise, u will be more piss with it. We need to press and hold the app windows till a small "x" appear and press the x to close the app. In ios12, things gone back to previous. Just swipe up will close the app.

Its not a fan boy comment. I do have an old iPhone with semi-responsive button. Especially the round button. Anyway, its a matter of getting use to the new gesture.
The button is there so that there is an alternative way to "talk" to the phone when screen becomes unresponsive.

The iPhone 5 is a known problem. You'll have to replace once in its lifespan.

Yes, I know where you are coming from and not offended at all. I do share your annoy - especially to those not savy ones, hard to do at one go. I may be wrong but from what I read on Apple, they tend to focus in than out - I don't rule out the possibilities that they might duck all buttons totally.

And yes, I am fully aware that you are suggesting an alternative. I think every consumer regardless whether Android or Apple users, should be "clear as day" on what is good and bad implementation. There is no doubt that Apple does certain things better in certain aspects of the design like the way it runs its apps which usually manage memory much better than its Android counterparts for years. Android is great in its customization but security may pose an issue in today's digital era. However, we are NOT talking about all these...rather we are talking in terms of the way we "interact" with our phones (regardless whether you are an Android or iOS camper). The moment it does not "feel natural" - i.e. intuitive, then it fails! That is what I am trying to bring the message across, we need to look at things like a normal human being look at things. Let's give a real-life example to depict what I'm trying to say here.

You are stuck at City Hall MRT station, there is a heavy downpour, you have no umbrella and you need to cross over to Adelphi to meet an important client of yours - it is a multi-million deal.

Option 1: Go down to City Link mall and purchase an umbrella from say a convenience stall like 7-Eleven.

Option 2: Call your client and explain that you are stuck at the MRT station and you have no umbrella, apologize and tell him, you will be late and hope that the other party does not mind. You wait it out until rain stop, then walk over double-pace.

Option 3: You are a cheapo and don't want to splurge on unnecessary expenses like buying an umbrella, instead buy newspaper and then use it to cover your head from the rain, other parts of the body drenched, never mind as long as I can make it in time for the appointment.

Option 4: I will share an umbrella with a stranger. I will ask around to see if anyone going to Adelphi.

Option 5: Call your client to meet half-way point so that you need not walk so far with just a few pages of newspapers covering your head and hope the client doesn't mind.

And the list goes on...BTW, there is no right or wrong answer, just stating the options like a normal "human being" will do under those circumstances.

Now imagine, in order for your to execute any of those above-mentioned options, I am going to tell you that you will need to call your supervisor first and explain to him/her and seek the latter's concurrence on the best course of action. Deep down in your heart, you probably already knew that the best option is simply to call and apologize to the client and inform him that you are being held up by the heavy downpour and hope for his kind understanding. But due to company's policy that any form of "deviation from the norm" will have to call up the company for proper advice lest the image will be tarnished due to the staff not acting in "an appropriate manner" in times like this. While your supervisor might tell you the "right" approach which probably coincides with your preferred option to take, it STILL doesn't make sense that just because there is a possibility that we might turn up late and worse drenched and screw up the client's first impression with the company's image, we need to call and explain things to a supervisor on what any "human being" with a reasonable capacity to think and act in the best interest and good faith under those circumstances will do. In a way, we (the iPhone X user) look stupid and incompetent as the company (Apple in this case) knows best that notifying the company in advance to ensure every move executed will always be "best"  route to take.

Hey, I totally feel you on the swipe and close app! I was so happy that iOS12 put that back than press and hold to click X.

See...you DO get what I'm trying to say here. Oh before I forget, this "intuitive" feature was already implemented in most Android phones featuring gesture-based navigation a long time ago before iOS12 rolled out...as you can see, Apple is no longer "taking the lead" but they are actually lacking behind and becomes a "follower" these days. That's why I am confident that all these navigation quirks will be ironed out in due course but IT SHOULD NOT take Apple so long to figure it out when a PRC smartphone makers can even do a far better job than their engineers!

And guess what, even when Apple does decide to change this "close app" gesture to follow what her rivals does, Apple still stubbornly refused to follow it "all" through ...it either deliberately or unwittingly left out the "Close All Apps" on-screen button to clear all running apps in the background in a single tap! Sigh...

LoL...we are ALL IN THE SAME FREQUENCY! But when one day, someone like "me" came along and state the "obvious" flaws and poor implementations, it became as if I am stating something that is "perfectly acceptable" as an iPhone user and I'm just here to create a scene :P

Here's a brief look at how the gesture-based navigation works on a Xiaomi Mi Max 3 phone...It is simple yet "effective" and "intuitive" imo. I actually preferred this over the iPhone X Series which I also owned. Pardon me for the no-editing as I just want to showcase the gesture navigation. It is quite hard to play with a 6.9" phablet using one hand while using the iPhone X to film it. :P

This year either the demand is not so good or Apple has decided to release more stocks of their new iPhones upon launch. The new iPhones are now readily available at the telcos for sale and recontracting unlike the previous versions where stocks were not easily available for months after the official launch dates.

That’s because the upgrade from iPhone X to Xs are incremental but the price increase is exponential (out of proportion from price to performance standpoint). Expect more of this to come.

My lousy Sony with 835

I have no doubt in Sony hardware. They dun bullshit like most of the PRC phones brands but that doesn't mean they are not up there.

The 845 is already doing 1.2 Gbps and the Kirin 980 will hit 1.4Gbps. I want to pay half the price for tmr product not double the price for a dinosaur.

Kekekek ;D… So, after all your bragging, your super Sony can’t get close to the 1Gbps of it’s Snapdragon 835’s spec… You do realise why don’t you? (Or maybe you don’t :) )

For inquiring minds, the iPhone Xs is averaging well above 200Mbps on Stinktel (at around Raffles Place this morning, around UOB Plaza area).

Can't believe I am saying this...I am officially back to iOS again after almost 3 years of not using iPhone.
...

Can't deny the fact that Apple's UI designs have gone downhill since it's best days, lots of inconsistency. That said, as a whole, it's still miles better than Android based UIs, but UI design is such a subjective topic.

As for shutting down the iPhone... I can honestly say in a year, I shut my phone down less than a handful of times... I can't even remember when was the last time I shutdown my X; iOS is a far more robust OS with few memory leaks that Android suffers from. Apple makes shutting down the phone intentionally difficult. They also don't recommend shutting down Apps; leave them running, Apple's memory management is stellar! :)

No, I am not expecting to use a phablet like device and expect it to work with one hand with ease. We all know that is not possible for some users with average to smaller hands. That is not what I am trying to convey here. The point I m making here is that a lot has changed since I last used an iPhone. If u read my earlier posts, u will know that my last iPhone was iPhone 7 Plus. Back then, there was no gesture based navigation yet until iPhone X came along. I did try out the gesture navigation at the store when iPhone X was launched but I didn’t find it to be intuitive back then. Hence I decide to stick with my Pixel 2 XL. When Pixel phone also released their own version of gesture based navigation from Oreo and now Pie, I found it to be rather good and intuitive. Hence I thought that iPhone gesture will be even more polished than the android counterpart since iPhone X was the first to release a gesture based navigation and based on Apple track record that focused a lot on great user experience and attention to details, I decided to give a go with iPhone XS Max since now I am not comfortable with gesture based navigation. Apparently it did not meet my expectations to say the least. I m giving my own personal opinions coming from my previous experience with the Pixel phone and various other Android phones before I gave my 2 cents worth.

In short, Apple gesture based navigation is not as well implemented compared to the android counterpart but I m confident that Apple will eventually make it more intuitive. I m not here to trash the iPhone as I m using one right now but merely stating what I feel as a user of both camps.

There are good and bad, pros and cons in every product but if we look at the “price to performance ratio” standpoint, I will be more critical in my review and have a much higher expectations for a phone that cost nearly $2K for the highest specs iPhone XS while android phone like Xiaomi Mi Max or Oppo Find X, Vivo phones etc, though not in that price bracket still able to deliver quite a seamless navigation.

When it comes to hardware improvements, Apple won hands down without a shadow of doubt. But when it comes to user navigation, I think there is room for improvement to an already near fantastic phone.

FWIW the power off slider button is just a surprising discovery from my experience and decide to share it here for those who have been like me switching between 2 camps of phones every once in awhile. I am simply asking why Apple need to change the Power Off slider button from a one button execution to now a 2 button press just to invoke that. This may seem minor to most but from where I previously came from, it is considered not intuitive. But that’s just me....

Hope I am clear in my explanation.

Well, here’s what I’m saying…  Someone tried to poo poo the iPhone’s real-world LTE performance by bragging about the Snapdragon chipset’s 1Gbps+ spec, but it backfired when his own phone with said chipset can barely scratch the surface of that spec…  That’s some hilarious self-pwn’ing right there… Hahahaha ;D

Apple bashing is tradition, its to be expected… especially from older folks who like to argue about smartphone specs like in the old days of PC vs. Mac; what’s the CPU speed, how much RAM, what’s the Wireless chip spec etc., it’s all par for the course in any online forums on any hobby topic (since even the Usenet/BBS days!) :).  Unfortunately some posters have fragile egos that get bruised easily… just look at this thread; they’re happy to come in and bash the iPhone left-right-centre, but can’t take it when confronted with real-world facts about their own phones… KPKB until like no tomorrow… kekeke ;D

...

I’ve seen the sporadic reports elsewhere of another potential Antenna-gate… Do you use yours naked, or with a cover over it (the phone, not your body ;D)?

A week into my Xs, I’ve got no problems with reception at all. In fact, its better than my X. And I don’t mean casual comparison, I mean actual radio reception information - from your iPhone dial *3001#12345#* and hit call… it’ll take you to the Radio details. From there select any of the major radio, LTE for example, then “Serving Cell Meas[urements]”, it’ll look like this;

(Reception measurements of the cell-site near my home screen-shot last Sunday).

The rsrp0/1 (Reference Signal Received Power) are dBm, the rsrq0/1 (Ref Signal Received Quality) in dB, and the sinr1/sinr0 (Signal to Interference plus Noise) are ratios. My Xs consistently shows stronger signal reception than my X (if I hadn’t already sold it, I’d show you screen shot comparisons).

The only Xs “issue” I've notice so far is that Battery life, appears weaker than I recall with the X when new… but my X was tweaked, and I haven’t really looked into and similarly tweaked performance on my new Xs yet.

I didn't claim my phone can do 1Gbps (or even 450Mbps even), you did, and failed to prove it.

Sorry your ego got bruised so badly :)

You just can't accept my phone is faster then your phone period. Fancy arguing specs with throughput.  ::)

It's obvious whose ego got bruised more badly since your phone is 2x my phone price and like CSCBB say grasping at straws.

Ok lah… don’t stress… let you win; I hereby solemnly declare that according to our dear damsel in distress, my iPhone’s LTE is so slow compared to her super Sony and her buddy’s sexy Samsuck which can do 1Gbps or 450Mbps in Singapore. Not only that, I paid double the price for my iPhone, so I must be a really stupid guy.

Happy? Ego soothed? Kekeke ;D

Wah… I just noticed these OT lines… Sounds like someone(s) holding a big grudge?… So PAP sounding some more; “reflect upon yourself”  ::)…  Well, I can really only think of one worthy response;

iPHONE NOT CHARGING USING A REGULAR LIGHTNING CABLE

http://www.youtube.com/v/J_lRJuQtBmc&fs=1

Another problem just surfaced for the new iPhone Xs and Xs Max but more worse for the latter model. The iPhone is unable to initiate a charge when in idle mode. With a raise to wake or a tap on the screen will get the charging going. There is inconsistency in some cases and not all the phones exhibit or able to replicate the same problem cum fix. Like Luke from Unbox Therapy, I'm also using Qi Wireless charging on my iPhone Xs Max and so far no issue.

Most likely a software fix should be working...Apple just recently released iOS Watch 5.0.1 to fix related battery charging issue as well.

Here's a (possible) fix to address the non-charging iPhone Xs and Xs Max issue:
One of the reasons for unsuccessful charging attempts could be caused by a new iOS 12 setting that allows users to restrict access to USB ports while the iPhone is locked. If your iPhone is locked when you plug it in, you most likely grab it to see what’s wrong if you don’t hear the charging confirmation. The Face ID unlocks the device and when you perform the second plug-in the process starts automatically.

Fix: Open Settings app and browse for Face ID & Passcode. Provide your Passcode. Next scroll for the “Allow Access When Locked Section” make sure that the USB Accessories feature is enabled (default it is disabled as a kind of security feature), to allow access to the USB port when the iPhone is locked.

Fact: If you apply the above mentioned fix and the problem isn’t fixed you might have to wait for a software update from Apple. The Cupertino-based tech giant hasn’t addressed this issue so far, but they will surly include a fix in the next update if we’re dealing with a software glitch.

I really hope I am not the only person facing this perennial issue which have been plaguing iOS user since my iPhone 7 Plus days and till now still can not resolve?! I refused to believe that. Usually I am quite resourceful with finding a solution from other websites but so far, no luck  I hope there is a simple fix in existence? I believe there are quite a number of members using iPhone or iPad that can point me to a solution so easy that I probably overlooked.

So, I borrowed my brother's super sexy Samsuck S8 to test out it's real-world LTE performance compared to the iPhone X and Xs performances I posted in this thread.

Same spot (Raffles Place, UOB Plaza), slightly earlier in the day then when I tested with my iPhone last week (well before the RP crowd hits). Unless I've mis-configured the phone somehow... so malu  ;D... no wonder no super sexy Samsuck S8 buddies wants to post their LTE throughputs... Kwa kwa kwa ... no 1Gbps, not even close to 450Mbps ::)... What about S9, or Note 9, any better?

I don't use tapatalk, so I can't tell for sure, maybe you want to post a pic.

That said, let me get this straight, you're blaming iOS for a 3rd party App not having proper keyboard UI management? Is that right? (Clearly your feeling is on the right track, you already know where the problem is... i.e. take it to tapatalk ;D)

Here's some help for them (key points in red bold);

https://developer.apple.com/library/archive/documentation/StringsTextFonts/Conceptual/TextAndWebiPhoneOS/KeyboardManagement/KeyboardManagement.html (https://developer.apple.com/library/archive/documentation/StringsTextFonts/Conceptual/TextAndWebiPhoneOS/KeyboardManagement/KeyboardManagement.html)

Quote
Keyboards and Input Methods

Whenever the user taps in an object capable of accepting text input, the object asks the system to display an appropriate keyboard. Depending on the needs of your program and the user’s preferred language, the system might display one of several different keyboards. Although your app cannot control the user’s preferred language (and thus the keyboard’s input method), it can control attributes of the keyboard that indicate its intended use, such as the configuration of any special keys and its behaviors

Managing the Keyboard
Although many UIKit objects display the keyboard automatically in response to user interactions, your app still has some responsibilities for configuring and managing the keyboard. The following sections describe those responsibilities.

Receiving Keyboard Notifications
When the keyboard is shown or hidden, iOS sends out the following notifications to any registered observers:

One reason to use keyboard notifications is so that you can reposition content that is obscured by the keyboard when it is visible. For information on how to handle this scenario, see Moving Content That Is Located Under the Keyboard.

There is no defined relationship between the timing of keyboard notifications and the timing of view-controller transitions.

Wow so much effort put in. Respect!

I'm usually early to my office, so it' easy to test out before I head up. I actually couldn't believe how badly the S8 LTE throughput was yesterday morning, so I tested it again, once at my wifey's office area (OFC) which was even worse, and again at UOB Plaza... Slightly better, but of course nowhere even close to someone's proclamation of 1Gbps or 450Mbps ;D

It gets worse, I compared the LTE radio signal reception between the Xs and the S8 (dial *#0011#); Unless I'm reading this wrongly, the iPhone Xs has clearly better radio recpetion all round! :)

(Timestamp differences are due to me stumblnig with switching SIMs and resetting phones just to be sure).
(http://i68.tinypic.com/29ojoxv.jpg)  (http://i63.tinypic.com/2vs1a8h.jpg)

With the iPhone x, Apple actually disabled (via iOS) a bunch of radio capabilities - I believe to synchronise performance between their Intel vs. Qualcomm modem based iPhones - and so performance was understably slower. Now on the Xs/Max Apple has switched exclusively to Intel's XMM 7560 modem chip and all radio capabilities are enabled via iOS 12. Performance seems to have caught up (or even exceeded) Qualcomms... Explains why Qualcomm filed a lawsuit alleging Apple leaked their IPR to Intel ;D

Singtel achieves Asia’s fastest five-carrier aggregation LTE speed
Peak mobile speed reaches 1.5Gbps

Singapore, 17 September 2018 – Singtel said today they have achieved peak LTE speeds of 1.5 Gbps using five-carrier aggregation[1]. This is the fastest in Asia and 50 percent faster than prevailing 1 Gbps speed.

[1] Achieved in a lab environment on a Viavi Solutions and Stellent Network’s TM5000 test system.

Their claim of “prevailing 1Gbps speeds” is of course bogus as you yourself have found out the hard way, and now they’re quoting 1.5Gbps lab performance, which again is not achievable in the real-world.

Hope you’ve learned your lesson :)

  • He then backtracks down from 1Gbps+ and posts a Stinktel article about achieving 450Mbps and claims it should be the “benchmark”; here (http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=276069.msg1279011#msg1279011)
  • When I explain that you can’t believe Stinktel’s numbers, and asks him about his own Snapdragon phone’s actual performance; here (http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=276069.msg1279119#msg1279119)
  • Only then does he do his own test and realises that his own Phone with a 1Gbps capable Snapdragon can only achieve slightly over 200Mbps in the real-world. Suddenly realising his booboo, he calls his Sony “lousy” (Kekeke ;D); here (http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=276069.msg1279322#msg1279322)

iOS need a firmware update. The LTE issue quite bad. Oh and the report is not from an android website

According to Singtel Samsung S7 and above support 256 QAM so compare S8 see how.

I am not rushing into the XR until it's proven to be trouble free, but I do need to replace my 7 Plus battery before the $38 offer expires.. Does anyone know how long it takes and which place has the shortest turnaround time?

Thanks
I just changed for my iphone6, 2 hours.

I wonder why XS is comparing to a nearly two years old phone S8? Because they know they will lose if it compare to a latest model?

Because it’s the one boasted by our friend that it could beat the iPhone “hands down”, here...

I very Gentleman we fight same place Raffles place. I am sure Samsuck S8 will win hands down.

Kekeke ;D… turned out of course in reality it can’t (for various real-world reasons). Besides, it’s the only “newer” Samauck phone that I had easy access to.

And by the way, who is the “they” you’re referring to?

This chap summarised very well all my thoughts between the latedt iPhone XS and XS Max and the Android experience.

I can confirm that the WiFi reception is indeed very very poor for the iPhone XS Max...as for LTE reception, it is indeed much faster than the Samsung flagship models and that's pretty much it is good at that...other stuff, the iPhone XS and XS Max is not worth the upgrade.

XS LTE speed is faster than Samsung Galaxy Note 8 which is the phone that reviewer use but slower than Note  9 as tested by other site. Knight rider did post this a few post ago.

After using iPhone XS Max for about 3 weeks...I have to say that I am starting to regret that I sold off my Pixel 2 XL. The interface and some of the apps which worked flawlessly previously on my Pixel phone did not work for me on my iPhone XS Max. The biggest improvement which I have to say that I truly enjoy is the Apple Watch Series 4 and I loved how it worked very well with the iPhone and I never have any issue with the connectivity and this year's improvements over the Series 2 (last owned by me) are by far the best! But sadly, in order to truly enjoy the Apple Watch, you will need the iPhone to pair with it.

Apple really need to work on the iOS interface and more work need to be done on the gesture-based navigation as quickly as possible. For those who have seen some of the postings I had made in the last 2 weeks probably realize that I am using my Xiaomi Mi Max 3 more so than the iPhone to type out long replies. As I am using Tapatalk app, the Android version is so much more faster and efficient with my typing...

How bad is “very very bad” (objectively speaking I mean)?…  Guess you might want to try updating with the new 12.0.1 release which has some WiFi bug fix before any further troubleshooting.

iOS doesn’t allow Apps to access the detailed WiFi information on the iPhone (for security reasons), but you can use Apple’s own “Airport Utility” App (WiFi Scanner mode enabled under Settings) to get the actual Received Signal Strength Indicator values... that'll tell you how bad (or good) you actual reception is... and maybe try Resetting Network Settings (Settings -> General-> Reset -> Reset Network Settings).  ;)

Wow! :o...

Quote
The Apple A12 is a beast of a SoC. While the A11 already bested the competition in terms of performance and power efficiency, the A12 doubles down on it in this regard, thanks to Apple’s world-class design teams which were able to squeeze out even more out of their CPU microarchitectures. The Vortex CPU’s memory subsystem saw an enormous boost, which grants the A12 a significant performance boost in a lot of workloads. Apple’s marketing department was really underselling the improvements here by just quoting 15% - a lot of workloads will be seeing performance improvements I estimate to be around 40%, with even greater improvements in some corner-cases.

Apple’s CPU have gotten so performant now, that we’re just margins off the best desktop CPUs; it will be interesting to see how the coming years evolve, and what this means for Apple’s non-mobile products.

iPhone XS Max vs. Note 9 camera comparison

So which phone has the better camera?
At the end of the day, both the iPhone XS Max and Galaxy Note 9 are significant improvements over last year's models. The iPhone XS Max has better image quality, wider dynamic range, higher quality video and its interface is a lot easier to to use. Those features are all really important to me, and even though the Note 9's camera is still excellent, the XS Max easily gets my vote as the better of the two.

Guess Fandroids will need Google Pixel 3 to come to the rescue liao ;)

Just to follow up on the Tapatalk iOS app for the iPhone. Finally, the app developer had released the fix to the keyboard covering the text field bug after so many years. I’m quite impressed with Tapatalk Developers as they really take in user comments of the bugs and worked on it.

I also asked the developers why there are always “more” patch releases for the Android counterpart as compared to iOS and to which he replied, “most of their user base are using Android compared to iOS and the former group constantly feedback to them on bugs to quash.” Now it makes perfect sense why after so many iterations of Tapatalk app released to iOS, this simple onscreen keyboard bug covering the text fields have not been resolved since I last used a iOS device (iPhone 7 Plus).

Interestingly, the rumours in a new iPad Mini did not make it to this event and I thought that piece of news was from Ming Chi Kuo?

Tech specs from apple sg website:
Support for the following combination of maximum concurrent display setups:

Up to three displays:
Two displays with 4096-by-2304 resolution at 60Hz connected via Thunderbolt 3 plus one display with 4096-by-2160 resolution at 60Hz connected via HDMI 2.0

or

Up to two displays:
One display with 5120-by-2880 resolution at 60Hz connected via Thunderbolt 3 plus one display with 4096-by-2160 resolution at 60Hz connected via HDMI 2.0

The HDMI port supports 4K60. The T3 ports can do 5K60. This thing is a pocket rocket!

Audio support specs:

HDMI 2.0 port supports multichannel audio output.

No details on whether it support Dolby Atmos, or DTS HDMA, etc.  I reckon that they will try to cover all possible audio formats that can be found in their Apple TV library, so as to support other parts of their business.

This looks bulky...anything of military grade will inevitably add bulk to the device. How’s the weight? I believe you will remove the tablet from the cover when you handle it with your hands?

I agreed that Apple’s offering of that keyboard folio is too expensive and the typing experience really doesn’t feel good. I preferred the butterfly keys on my Macbook Air 2018.

For the iPad Pro, I’m using the Logitech K810 for typing if I need to and switch between the profiles when I switch to my desktop PC.

Im using the apple folio keyboard on my 11" and while it does take some getting used to its OK on the move and when apps chatting and the odd web site, and forum posts but I wouldn't say its a workhorse for documents...not the 11" version anyway.

one thing I do like is the keys are only activated when its used in the 2 positions on a flat area...ie when its folded to the back for hand holding the keys dont mess things up being deactivated.

the other thing I really like is there enough weight and rigidity to have the iPad hang over the steering wheel in my car so I can use it while waiting in the car.

One hurdle might be not being able to put any magnetic plate behind to use magnetic mounts in the car on another surface. I tried a plate in place but not permanently glued and it might just work OK.

I believed I saw the Targus case folio you've mentioned for sale at the Challenger store earlier when I did some window shopping...Not exactly what I will say is an elegant design.

I just couldn't make myself to get the iPad's smart keyboard folio...way too expensive.I am currently using a clear TPU case which is light enough and provides adequate protection from any accidental waist height drop...

Yep...it looks clean in design and serves its function as a case. I'm still looking for a reasonably priced third party case for my 11" version. A word of caution for those looking to get a case, if you decide to buy the Pencil, make sure that the third party case supports and that I mean allow a cut-out for the Pencil to be magnetically attached to the iPad Pro for charging.

A couple of things i like about the folio keyboard...

1 you can hit a key twice and Face ID will open up the screen for you - no swiping.
2 you can cmd tab to swap apps which is great
3 you can use cmd held down to do things like refresh, open close tabs etc
4 you can opt scroll up and down a page at a time

I’m sure there are some others I haven’t found yet

I have never bought any Applecare for my many Apple products except for iPhone X and my son's Macbook Pro.  For both cases, I am regretting it.

Apple products are extremely reliable and I have never return anything.   They become obsolete before they break down.

I got my 12.9" iPad Pro, the week they introduced it.  Till now, many years later, it is still functioning very well.

I personally feel Apple Care is a good investment – especially for computers and iOS devices. My current 2016 15” MBP Pro w/ touch bar has some screen flickering problems so I will get a chance to exercise the apple care option for it this weekend.

I wish I had purchased the apple care for my son’s iPhone 7 when I bought it 2 years ago – he damaged the screen due to a fall about 2 months later and I had to get a 3rd party to replace it. His usage pattern is consistent with how mid-teens treat their phones so that was why I got the apple care for his XS last weekend.

I placed an order for the iPad Pro 12.9” yesterday and opted for the apple care too. This was because of a previous experience 4 years ago when my iPad Air 2 developed a screen flickering problem that was fixed easily since I had apple care for that.

So yeah do consider getting the apple care – it might save you a lot of grief that you may not be prepared for.

For me, i usually sell it before the warranty expire. I'm more of a "buy, review and then sell" type of techie...

The new iPhones, which Apple unveiled in September, cost more than previous versions. The $749 iPhone XR is the least expensive new iPhone, but it costs $50 more than last year's cheapest model, the iPhone 8.
The iPhone XS Max can cost up to $1,449. The higher prices -- without many more features -- could be driving customers to keep their current phones longer or buy last year's models.
they only have themselves to blame. all in one word greed. samsung is going down the same route too.

Under Apple Care, any damage to the new Ipad Pro will only incur nominal fee for repair or replacement.

AppleCare Plus has 2 elements. If its damage not due to accidental damage like drop or stuff, it covers any repair without additional cost. If its due to accidental damage, you pay a fee to get a new unit. I think for iPhone is $180 and you can have 2 times replacement due to accidental damage.

Finally caved.

Got the iPhone XS Max 512GB from Telstra. The 64GB X was running out of space every day. Deleting the tonnes of crap from my WhatsApp chats wasn’t enough.

It was on the unlimited plan so unlimited data and local and international calls which seems pretty cheap for $199 a month. For bundling my ADSL homeplan they even threw in an iPad 9.7” (Q1 2018 model) 32GB with 10GB data a month.

I think demand for the new models mustn’t be too high. Been in stock for a long time.
