Title: Escooter
Post by: qflyer on June 07, 2018, 08:22
https://www.tnp.sg/news/singapore/pmd-safety-advocate-knocked-down-e-scooter-rider
I was almost knock down by 2 escooter twice in space of 2 hours. I didnt hear them coming from the back. Those 2 women on the machine went on their way as if nothing has happened.
I am not against escooter only those without leg(s) , only with doctors certs, bells are a must, speed reduce to 5 km/hr.
I could have been on the news, ended in hospital.

Having escooter in Singapore actually is a good way of transport for short distance travel.

Its not about the escooter per se. But how the G gonna regulate and enforce the usage.

Just like those cyclists which takes up the bloody full lane especially in a large group.

Just drive along Pasir Ris during weekends morning and you will know.

Scooter Hate Is On A Destructive Roll In California

The wave of shared electric scooters cramming sidewalks, blocking entryways and slamming into pedestrians has unleashed explosive scooter hate among usually peace-loving Californians.

The hapless electric gadgets are being torched, jammed into toilets, tossed off balconies, hurled into garbage and decorated with dog poop — and it’s being memorialized on social media, reports the Los Angeles Times.

They can come up with additional restrictions, no issue.

It’s all about enforcement. That’s where they fail big time.

In the good old days, when they come up with a new law, serious enforcement is put in place soon after law is passed, to drum in the law into people’s mind. Nowadays pass law then do a half past six job on enforcement.

And I notice all this bullsh*t about car lite society.

How many of these cyclist/eBike/PMD users who own a car will give up their car? I can make a guess - none will give up their car!!

On the other hand, those who do not own a vehicle may purchase eBike/PMD.

Net net, more powered vehicle fighting for limited road/walkway space. This crunch causes the strain & tension we are now seeing.

Seriously, these highly paid mini-star cannot see this??

Keep yapping about car lite society. Ultimate bullsh*t.

Probably a “mediocre” minister can do a better job with shaping future transport policies.

The current road/walkway infrastructure was built to cater to current motor vehicles & pedestrians volume.

If they wanna continue to support PMD/eBikes adoption, while keeping car population @ 0 growth; then they need to build a network of PMD/eBike path nation wide to support these new type of powered vehicles. It’s going to be a major infrastructure spend spanning many years. Once they realise this, and knowing how money minded they are, it will dawn on them that these PMD/eBikes need to be licensed & pay some sort of tax to fund the new infrastructure.

Spike in demand for e-scooter model that meets new fire safety standard

Among the dozens of e-scooter models being sold in the Singapore market, only one is currently compliant with the new fire safety standards set by the Land Transport Authority - and its stocks are fast dwindling, according to some local retailers.

Demand for the Segway Ninebot ES2 has increased after the Government announced on Monday that all motorised personal mobility devices (PMDs) that are not UL2272 certified will be illegal by 2022.

This is so sad - government's responsibility to ensure that anything that may be a fire hazard be regulated and dangerous device removed. How many more fires do we need before they act immediately? Retailers should also be responsible. And most of all, the public should be aware by now that such device post a danger and should avoid buying them altogether.
Title: Re: Escooter
Post by: Jagdpanzer on October 04, 2018, 08:45
Frankly, some retailers may not be aware of the fire hazards of some cheap PMDs of dubious quality.

What I'm disturbed is that why the authority is not aware that high capacity lithium battery which is not tested and certified poses a fire hazard and allow these uncertified PMDs to be sold on the first place. Samsung Note 7 lithium battery fire was already a warning of potential battery fire for PMDs.

You cannot carry large lithium batteries to the plane or install unapproved lithium batteries in your Prius or Tesla.

I find nowadays many devices in the home can be fire hazards because many have LiIon batteries in them. Compared to 20years ago, mostly dry cell battery powered devices or NiCd, which are less flammable.

Be careful

This woman komplain she got her scooter seized by LTA on 30/07/18 while she was heading to work. Reason being that it was over the allowable weight of 20 kg.

She receives this letter 2 months plus later and asking her to pay for :
•TOWING FEE – $150
•STORAGE FEE $21.40X77days = $1647.80

Total sum up to be $1797.80

Ho Jun Wei, 18, hit 78-year-old Wong Ah Jee when the latter did not give way to Ho’s e-scooter while both were on a pedestrian pavement in Yishun. The accident left Wong with a fractured skull.

This could have been very very  different. The poor senior citizen could have died. Don’t know if he is left with permanent neurological damage. The family should sue the teen.

What is LTA thinking? There is already such a big public outcry over the accidents and fires caused by e-scooter and now they are granting a license for a commercial operator? I think LTA has to draw up and enforce a workeable framework before allowing for this - have they not learnt from the bike sharing saga? Do we need more accidents and deaths or fire breakouts from battery charging before some affirmative action would be taken?

This evening around midnight, my block's haunted lifts so happening. Somebody's e-scooter exploded and burst into flames right outside the ground floor lift lobby. The security guards tried to put out the flames with fire extinguishers but it did not seemed to work and the flames got fiercer. I though at first that it was the lifts that caught fire when I heard the loud explosions and saw the smoke and fire from my floor.

These e-scooters are downright dangerous. The e-scooter was not even being charged and it could still explode and catch fire.  ???

I understand the calls for a ban on e-scooters, but will this really solve the problems we have today, which have been partly brought about by inconsiderate behaviour and a lack of graciousness? If we were to ban everything that has the potential to harm, the list will be never-ending.
https://www.straitstimes.com/forum/letters-in-print/banning-e-scooters-wont-address-lack-of-graciousness

This idiot is missing the point completely, not about graciousness. It’s all about someone getting badly hurt, some needing lifelong medical care. He will only change his position when he or his love ones get seriously hurt by escooter.

If LTA is serious about tackling this issue, there are many ways that it can do this - restricting the speed to walking speed so that one does not get hurt to the extent that hospitalisation is needed - this protects both rider and pedestrian, licensing riders, creating dedicated pavements for cyclist and e scooter riders... many things can be done before someone meets with a fatal accident. The suggested solutions does cater to both riders and pedestrians and strike a balance between needs. Frankly, until some VIP's relatives get hurt, I do not see them hearing the calls of the ordinary citizens.

Sounds good on paper. But it wont work. Escooters can easily fitted with more powerful motor and battery.
Only a complete ban can protect pedestrians.

Well right now, there is nothing done about this issue. Implementation needs to be enforced and strict penalites imposed so that there is a deterrence.

In the world of shared responsibilities, lta just like agc and nus board committee should also take blame for not putting personal and public safety on  top of the list. The education minister has shamelessly refused to act too.
So far they all have denied any responsibilities. Shameful and despicable.

https://www.straitstimes.com/forum/letters-in-print/make-pmd-users-dismount-near-bus-stops
Quote
I have seen several near misses as a result of dangerous cycling and PMD use through bus stops.

In the past year alone, I witnessed three incidents at a bus stop in New Upper Changi Road, a stone's throw away from APSN (Association for Persons with Special Needs) Katong School.

In the first, as a middle-aged man rose from his seat at the bus stop and moved forward to board an approaching bus, a speeding PMD rider, approaching from the opposite direction of road traffic, nearly knocked him down. The man shouted at the rider, who just zoomed away.

In the second, a secondary school girl was brushed by a speeding PMD rider, causing her to drop the books she was holding and nearly fall. After a few seconds of shock, she picked up her books with the help of a woman nearby, but the rider looked back and zoomed away.

In the third, about a month ago, an APSN Katong School student was nearly knocked down by a food delivery rider on a PMD. The rider stopped a few metres away and shouted at the student, perhaps for not looking back and giving the rider the right of way, before zooming away.

Commuters at bus stops instinctively look in the direction of approaching buses, with some suddenly moving forward when they spot their bus, putting them at risk of head-on crashes with cyclists and PMD users approaching from the opposite direction.

The Land Transport Authority should therefore consider making the following compulsory for cyclists and PMD users:

•Dismount at least 2m away from bus stops, and push their vehicles through the bus stops, or

•Ride very slowly through the bus stop, but only if they are approaching from the same direction as road traffic, as commuters would likely be looking in that direction.

And if all this still does not deter cyclists and PMD riders from speeding through the length of bus stops, then barriers restricting the use of PMDs, which do not affect the movement of wheelchairs and personal mobility aids, should be put up to force cyclists and PMD users to dismount.
stupid and irresponsible lta. this writer is rather naive, only a complete ban will work. we need to boycott food deliveries.

I cannot believe that it took so long for them to realize the adoption of UL2272 standard (only in September last year) to improve fire safety.

What about mobile and notebook batteries, which are also potential fire risk. Are they going to ensure these devices have to be listed? Many people use unlisted devices and charged them unattended besides combustibles e.g on office desks, besides bed, on top of their expensive HT/hifi etc. I always ensure mine are all UL listed, many years ago.

these PMDs are not much different from a car and almost like a motor bike except the likes of a Honda Golden wing or a Harley .

But riders do not require lessons, test and licence . The mental age of a toddler, no concept of safety, theirs and other road users, riding a automobile capable of speed of up to 60-70 km / hour.

How did the very first was allowed on our roads is beyond me.

so it seem more is being done to remind responsible use of PMDs.

Giving out leaflets, reminding of safety etc. Someone said it would be a knee jerk reaction to ban them. We read of injuries almost daily, and those are reported ones. And there are those such as the FB video above. I do not see how it would that be deem as knee jerk.

I think it was a mistake to allow them from day one.

Do you recall how you feel the very first time you were behind the wheels. That feeling came from knowing the potential of the machine you're driving, plus those around you sharing the same road.

These PMDs give a false sense that one is on nothing more than a bicycle.

This is the problem. Singaporeans are now too lazy and expect comfort and convenience. This is the reason why GrabFood and Deliveroo could thrive. Hawker centres are now closing early - 10 years ago, the food centres and coffee shops used to open till late. Now, most close early, citing lack of business due to all these food deliveries.

sometimes it's not about lazy. it's true that coffee shop or hawker center are always nearby but people will have craving and these food delivery services will satisfy them.

also, sometimes the coffee shop nearby doesnt serve food the suit their taste and so they resort to food delivery.

sometimes with discount, it's even cheaper than order from the shop itself or just slightly more exp. for the time and effort, it is more economical.

of cos, there are some who are very reckless but mostly are those teens that are rushing, also dont know what they rushing to.

Time to start banning cars?
Title: Re: Escooter
Post by: jonchew38 on November 07, 2019, 08:29
Food delivery users are a small minority and between offending food delivery users. Compared against the mass who has been incensed by the number of accidents and deaths due to e-scooters, the election maths is an easy one. What I do not like is the flip flopping of policies as they were not well thought out and safeguards put in place prior to implementation. Proper implementation could prevent such flip flops if the government has the foresight to think this through or even walked away from allowing e-scooters.

I was back in Singapore to visit family last year after 4 years staying in Australia, and I was truly appalled by the PMDs on the footpaths. I'm glad that something has been done about it.

I felt that it was downright dangerous for these people to be zipping by at very fast speeds down footpaths used by elderly and children. Food delivery is the worst, because they carry a large backpack and they are always in a hurry. With elderly parents in Singapore and very young nephews and nieces, I am very glad.

Just ban from footpaths but allow on the road. If bicycles can on road ... why can’t pmds? Let those pmd retards who speed and don’t follow the rules tango with the lorries and cars on the road.

LTA shouldn’t try to baby and protect everyone in this situation ... ie...pedestrians and pmd riders. Anyway... allowing pmds on the road is not a death sentence for pmd riders. Gotta move away from that thinking. Also still can tweak the rules to minimise problems for both pmd riders and vehicles who now gotta deal with those retards who break the the rules... sharing the roads.

did a quick lookup on electric scooter in Australia.

In NSW you can't use it in public spaces whereas in Western Australia, the e-scooters are limited to 200W power and below 10kph on public roads and footpaths.

Bicycle which are motor assisted are limited to below 25 kph.

If your e-scooter or electric bicycle are illegally modified or "zhng"ed, and you get into any kinds of mishap on the road, with cars or other pedestrians, you will be charged and be liable for all damages and medical bills that comes along with it

I believe that if the penalties for offences are strict enough, it may encourage responsible riding. A jail and hugh fine for accidents caused by e-scooter riders along with proper licensing may well reduce the number of riders to those who can ride responsibly.

LTA needs to make sure the e-bikes speed is limited to 25kph.

Other than that, knowing and understanding the traffic rules aka  Theory test etc is also key.

Without this plus minimum age being 16 and no insurance required, most drivers will have their hands full avoiding them if the.numbers is to be increased significantly.

Higher.speed PMDs poses danger to lower speed pedestrians on the same path, wouldn't now putting lower speed PABs to share paths with higher speed motor vehicles posed danger to them.

Yes there is, albeit expensive. Build new dedicated lanes for bike/PMD. In some parks here, there are dedicated lanes for walking vs. cycling/PMD.

The fallout continues. If escooters are banned much earlier it will not come to this. The useless transport minister and lta are wholly responsible for all the mess now.

Bike is no solution. Total ban is.

Now that the food delivery riders are attending every MPS to get themselves heard by their political leaders, the enterprising Marsiling-Yew Tee MP decided to make use of the opportunity to help Sing Post recruit more postmen.  ::)

https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/the-big-read-escooter-footpath-ban-where-go-from-here-12099792

A very very disturbing article, no remorse or apology from the pap and cohorts to those who have been hurt and died. This is the result of pap putting the so called car lite above the safety of the people.

Why no complete ban? That’s will be admission of failure. Again it shows pap disregard and contempt for the people. The so called experts Walter Theseira and others call for building of dedicated lanes for pmds, but there is no guarantee that they will stray into the pedestrian path and knocking them down.

I am so sorry that these people from the ministers, lta and “experts” are running public institutions now.
