Title: EGreat A10 4K HDR media player (with review)
Post by: desray on October 08, 2017, 13:42
I'm looking to get this player for my BD ISO and BDMV playback. And the recent firmware even manage to playback a ripped 4K UHD bluray rip with full menu navigation successfully (but that's old news since they only managed to showcase the Smurfs 4K UHD bluray title which at this present point, is STILL the only one that has its encryption defeated by the jailbreakers. But that's besides the point.

This one comes with HDR10 and HDMI 2.0a full bandwidth support at 18 Gbps. I decide to keep my Oppo BDP-203 unjailbroken so that I can continue to use it as a true bluray player and I have resisted the great many updates that Oppo had rolled out since its launch. There is little to no effort made by the Jailbreakers to release further updates (at least from the way I look). So I'm gonna revert to media player. Whilst scouring the web for info, I discovered this product by Egreat, a quick glean on their so-called support forum and the developers and staff seems responsive to some of the user's remarks/comments. Their firmware support seems pretty "stable" and frequent to a certain degree.

This mode that I'm looking at cost around $400++ which I'm fine with the pricing as too low, I'll be more skeptical with their claims. China made products are no longer a 2nd grade science fair project these days, many have improved leaps and bounds. The only issue comes with their end user support if I might add. But judging from the maturity and developments i have experiences in the past couple of years, I think media player is STILL the most VFM product for every Home Theater enthusiast to own.

The product was released to the market in early qtr of this year, so I am wondering any member(s) own one and how does it perform and hold up after months of usage? Pls share your experience and I will appreciate it.

TIA...

They also have this A11 model, supposedly contain Hi-Fi DAC quality...but I will definitely not gonna get this as I'm fairly certain that if you truly an audiophile, you won't settle for anything less...but here's a pic of the A11.

Was contemplating in early July to get the A10 but held back since my TV and AVR are not HDMI 2.0 and will not enjoy full 4K support. :P

Sitting on the fence now :)

I didn’t opt for the eGreat, in my recent Shenzhen trip, but handcarried the HiMedia Q5 Pro instead due to past experiences with eGreat product reliability due to heat and firmware issues during the popcorn A-100 era.

Pretty sure they have improved in these areas by now. ;)

Wow...that era is almost a decade ago. Hopefully there is no problem with the heat issue you described.

Look what just arrived today at my doorstep...i will do a mini review on this awesome media player during the holiday. Initial impression... The best $350+ I have ever spent on a media player. The built quality is top notch coming from a China brand.

I can finally retire my oppo 203 from its jailbreak "free" now.

Thanks kelvinsin for the word of caution. I will take a look at that. It’s odd that the HDMI port will be affected by the media player unless there is physical removal and contact with the AVR hdmi ports...but definitely a concern for user if this really happening to many users of A5 and A10 models.

Hi Kelvin, thanks for the links you have sent to me via PM. I have replied you regarding my 2 cents worth.

For the rest, to be safe on the side of caution...pls do not get this media player lest it cause issue to your AVR. The review will be based on my personal opinions through my usage experience. I'll not be answering question regarding this "HDMI problem" (if any) to begin with since I've not personally encounter it myself at this point. But if by any sheer streak of bad luck that this media player did something untowards to my AVR, I will be sure to report here immediately. But until then, I will refrain from commenting this issue.

Thanks for understanding.

What you are referring here is the Egreat's proprietary s/w player (in a app format - i.e. apk). This "beta" version you are referring is already included in the latest firmware update at (1.2.5.6) just released a week ago.

As promised, here's my short review on the Egreat A-10 media player.

This is the latest offering from Egreat and I have been using it for the past few days. The A-10 is undeniably the best built and most well thought out design I have ever seen in a media player. At its very core, it is running an Android OS Lollipop 5.1.1.

Unlike the Popcorn Hour PCH A-500 which utilize its own proprietary which is pretty “limited” in terms of features and functionalities, the Android OS provides a  more versatile propositions in this area. If you have been using Android phones like Samsung and tons of others in the past years, then the OS should not sound “alien” to you. In short, you can download, install and play Android games (sideloading of apk installer) on this device and pairing it up with a wireless RF remote controller with a typical D-pad design (arrow keys + Enter key) and you are pretty much good to go.

But that’s besides that point, this is NOT what we are here for. We are here for its main selling point - i.e. the ability to navigate a full BD menu of a BD ISO or BDMV file structure from this media player. And they are not kidding when Egreat boldly claimed that this is currently (at least for the last couple of years) the ONLY media player that is able to playback a 1:1 ripped of a true 4K UHD bluray title back in CES 2016.

Besides its ability to playback a BD ISO/BDMV with full menu navigation, this media player also comes equipped with the latest HiSilicon VXE chipset which features a quad-core 64 bit architecture which means it is very powerful and able to handle and process demanding apps concurrently. This is important if you going to market this A-10 as a media player and not just a cheap Android TV box which cost less than $50 to get in Sim Lim Square these days.

Other key features of this media player include...

HDMI 2.0a (this is important for HDR content playback and even Dolby Vision to work!)
Playback of 4K resolution (3840 x 2160p) at 60fps
Up to 12-bit color depth to reduce color banding
HEVC H.265 hardware decoding on-the-fly
Supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X and other hi-def lossless audio codecs like DTS-HD MSTR and Dolby TrueHD
Preloaded with VidOn codecs for the best Kodi (XBMC) experience!

On paper, all these features culminates to a powerful media player running on steroids and a dream machine for home theater enthusiasts like us. I’m happy to report that all the features I have mentioned above all passed during my testing phase.

Playback of MKV movies
This is the one key area that will either make-or-break this media player and I’m happy to say that the A-10 handled it effortlessly. It loaded extremely fast and there is no video/audio syncing issues on all the materials (in the likes of 24fps, 30fps, 50fps and 60fps) I have thrown at it. Even with MKV remux of H.264 and H.265 codecs with HD lossless audio like DTS-HD MSTR played flawlessly.

For MKV playback, A-10 is using Egreat’s proprietary player app and it is light-weight, meaning it is not CPU intensive and yet provides us with all the essential options like chapters, subtitles settings, audio track switching and time-seek to name a few are just a click away. The ability to select 10-bit as opposed to 8-bit color bit depth proved to be vital as it literally removed all the unsightly color banding which can be very apparent if we watch a movie with a 8-bit color bit depth with a 1080p encoding clip. Interestingly when it comes to selection, there is no “Auto” option for the Color space (YCrBr and RGB), it will default to conform to the display monitor and in my case, my JVC X7000 DiLA 4K projector which is capable of accepting 4K UHD resolution @60fps at 10-bit. For those uninitiated, all bluray discs are encoded with a 8-bit at 4:2:0 chroma sampling rate (color space) while 4K UHD discs are encoded at a 10-bit 4:2:0. Depending on the video upscaling and processing capability of your display monitor (OLED TV or projector), PQ will be much better if the upscaling and image processing are handled by the TV and projector. Unless you know what you wish to achieve, you can choose to allow the A-10 to do the video upscaling from 8-bit at 4:2:0 (for normal 1080p movies) to a 10/12-bit at 4:4:4 with an upscaled 4K resolution of (3840 x 2160p)24fps. As I have mentioned before, there is no “Auto” option for color space and color bit depth in the Video Settings of the A-10, hence the player will “automatically” switch to the optimum mode based on the type of display you used. This is something you need to take note of. I guess Egreat engineers decided to do away with this “Auto” option since not many user is going to be bothered with it except for some hardcore HT enthusiasts. But I’m glad that Egreat allows the latter group to have full rein with the options avail for even better PQ.

The PQ and SQ looked and sounded much more “cleaner” (due to the 10-bit color bit depth which further upscaled by my JVC Projector to a 12-bit which eliminate or greatly reduced video artifacts like color banding in the skyline for instance) The shades (gradients) looked more natural and smoother all around. The best PQ I have seen on a media player playing a typical 1080p using the normal H.264 video encoding.

Playback of a HEVC or H.265 movie at 4K resolution encoded in 24fps and with HDR (in a BT 2020 container) instantly activates the HDR mode on my JVC X7000 with no problem (thank goodness!) The A-10 is able to pick up the meta-data which sends a flag to activate the full 10-bit at 4:2:2 to my projector for further upscaling to a 4:4:4. A comparison using the Pacific Rim 4K MKV rip on the A-10 and the actual movie playback on a 4K UHD disc on my Oppo 203 is nearly identical except for a much richer tone (gradients) on the Oppo 203 playback. This is understandable since H.265 is but a form of compression algorithm at work here. Hence a lot of video “information” will eventually be “lost-in-translation” during the video processing bit. The classic "garbage-in, garbage-out" saying applies and you can’t escape that...

Surprisingly, I have not encounter any quirks when it comes to playback of the newer Object-based sound mix in the likes of Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. This is rather surprising as often times, these Object-based audio mix is notorious for not playing nice on most media players. So far, my A-500 has no issue with the playback on both audio formats and the HiSilicon quad core chipset (model: Hi3798 V200) have no problem decoding it (thank goodness again!)

Playback of BD ISO/BDMV file structure
Now comes the most important aspect of this media player that sets the others apart (most, if not ALL media players ONLY provides a BD-Lite menu navigation function which often stripped off the Special features found on a physical bluray disc itself). ISO rippers have waited for the longest times (since PCH C-200) when suddenly the licensing by the BDA forbids playback of a full BD ISO with menu navigation. So to conform to the industry requirements, most media players and even Oppo bluray players which was once touted as the best 2-in-1 player that allows BD ISO full menu navigation playback have to remove this feature from their players and since then, many of us have been searching in vain for that “elusive” BD ISO with full menu navigation to come back on media players. And Egreat manage to do the impossible (I don’t want to know what has been done or change or whether is it even legal for Egreat to implement it) and I’m happy to report that it worked flawlessly!

Take a look at the latest 1:1 BD ISO rip from the Spiderman Homecoming bluray disc. I am able to navigate using my air mouse to access the special featurette in the Spiderman Homecoming rip with no problem. Surprisingly, the loading time for a 40GB BD ISO took less than 8 secs to load up...2 times faster loading speed compared to my jailbroken Oppo BD 203!!! That’s pretty impressive for a media player.

Any “cinavia bug” on A-10?
I know I know, the next burning question in everyone’s mind will be the infamous “cinavia bug”. Unfortunately I have not yet try out a BD ISO with known cinavia bug at the time of writing this review. But rest assured, I will try out one of those Lionsgate rip to see whether the cinavia bug rear its ugly head. Personally I don’t have much confidence with this considering that cinavia is digital DRM (or water mark) implemented “within” the disc itself. What this mean is that UNLESS there is a ripping software (used to be Slysoft’s AnyDVD HD) that is able to remove digitally the cinavia flag, there is nothing you can overcome it AFAIK. So I will not have high hopes on that A-10 will not encounter this bug. I’m pretty sure it will succumb to the “bug”. Nevertheless, I will still try out and report back if I have the time to sit through 2 hrs of movie produced by Lionsgate studio. Off hand, I have the Vin Diesel’s The Last Witch Hunter and the Hunger Games series to test out. So stay tuned…

Latest Update on the cinavia bug

Color me impressed! Sitting through the entire Last Witch Hunter released by Lionsgate and there is no cinavia code 3 error throughout the entire movie. I believed it has something to do with Egreat using its own proprietary player to bypass this cinavia flag.

The best features in A-10
(+) Comes with Bluetooth 4.0 LE which allows you to pair up with an external pair of bluetooth headsets/speakers when you just want to watch a TV series like the Big Bang Theory without powering up your AVR and engaging your 5.1/7.1 speakers.

(+)  Sideloading of apk files from Google Playstore to run your favourite Android games.

(+) SATA HDD front loading bay for HDD and there is no need for any kind of screws or HDD enclosure housing, the design has been re-designed to allow ease of loading and removing the HDD as easy as opening the bay door and closing it! Neat!

(+) Automatic poster wall with nifty movie and casting info panels. Very comprehensive and nicely layout. According to Egreat, it is fully “automated” as long as there are movie files residing in a folder and the built-in poster engine will run recursively in the background either on startup process or during operation (invoke by user). There is no need for user intervention. It got pretty much most of the titles in my collection right 90% of the time except for those non-Hollywood titles like HK, Korean films etc. Fortunately, user can easily “replace” the poster and movie synopsis with ease of a click by hitting the edit option and choose the right poster and movie synopsis.

(+) Provides an additional SATA 3-to-USB 3.0 input for an additional SATA HDD to be connected for your movies.

(+) The VidOn runtime for Kodi (XBMC) allows for an alternative BD ISO/BDMV file structure playback with full menu navigation using the VidOn’s very own player. It comes in handy as an alterntaive player to Egreat’s very own media player. There is some limitations with the VidOn’s player when it comes to full menu navigation as each selection of a feature will result in a pause and screen blankout. This is likely due to the way the VidOn player handles navigation via software decoding which excludes itself from utilizing the 4 cores of the chipset for hardware decoding. Well, at least there is an alternate solution. I won’t complain…

(+) Allows for remote sideloading of apk files using just your smart phone or laptop. No need to upload to a SD card and then do a transfer to the A-10 to execute the installation. Out of the box, the “Installation from Unknown Sources” has already been activated to run any apk files from within the media player itself. No other 3rd part app required. Neat!

The nitpicks I have with this media player…
(-) We are at the mercy of Android OS...for instance, even the hardware components found in the A-10 are deemed top notch but because its core is still running an Android OS and the worst is it is still using the dated Lollipop firmware (5.1.1). What this mean is there is no way we can sideload the latest Youtube app which can playback native 4K content with HDR! Bummer!!! For that to happen, the OS has to be upgraded to at least Android 6.0 or higher. Fortunately, the company has announced that it will be upgraded to Android Nougat 7.1.1 very soon (hopefully by this year end) to allow for more compatibility with the latest Android apps to work with the A-10.

(-) It seems that there is some network bandwidth bottlenecks with the Ethernet connection. I’m having problems streaming a 1080p content with high bitrate from the Terrarium TV app without suffering from freeze and stuttering. This is probably due to the way it handles network traffic as I have no problem playing back 1080p or even 4K sample footages from my NAS via the home network.

(-) Stock remote controller is using IR-technology which in my opinion is a shame considering that A-10 UI which allows Android apps to be installed natively requires at least an air mouse capable controller for ease of navigation.

(-) Unlike my PCH A-500, there is no SACD and DSD playback support. Sorry audiophiles...

Conclusion
Will I recommend it? Of course I will...At $350+ bundled with so much power and great hardware specs, it is a very worthy proposition for any serious movie buffs and HT enthusiasts. The fact that I have decided to “retire” my PCH A-500 (put up for sale now) and coupled with my decision to do a firmware update for my jailbroken Oppo 203 speaks for itself on how satisfied I am with this media player.

My basic requirements for a great media player requires it to playback my movie files (be it MKV or BD ISO/BDMV) with ease and as consistent in its performance as possible and A-10 proved that it can deliver it. In addition, the continued firmware support which addresses many bugs by the Egreat developer team has been very encouraging and promising thus far. Now I have to wait patiently for the Android Nougat update to allow me to playback Netflix and Youtube 4K with HDR content (hopefully by year end).

I will try to watch a Lionsgate rip later in the evening and sit through the movie to see if there is any cinavia error message. I will report here later.

By the way, the A-10 does support Dolby Vision at 12-bit however it is currently not activated due to licensing issue with Dolby's Lab. At the moment, Dolby only licensed out Dolby Vision to bluray players and TV and projectors. All media players has been excluded at this point. So any media players that claim support for Dolby Vision is bullshitting you.

Sadly this is not sold in Singapore.

Yes guys, this is indeed a very VFM media player that does pretty much everything very well. Full BD ISO support with full menu navigation plus support for 4K content and also object based sound mix like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X and to top it all up, it seems to be free from cinavia bug as well... Its every home theater buff's wet dream. LoL...but the only gripe is no local warranty support so if u get yourself a lemon or DOA, you will have very little recourse.

I bought from Lazada because it fulfills the order for consumers here and also provides assurance that if the item is defective or not the item the consumer ordered, the latter can return the item to the designated collection centre run by Lazada for refund or help to liaise with the China supplier of the problem with the products... Peace of mind.

When shopping in lazada, make sure u look at the track record like years in operation serving the Singapore mkt as an indicator to see how many products over the years have been sold to Singaporeans. Naturally, the higher the better as it is more reliable. Avoid those with less than 6 mths even though the price is much more attractive than the ones with better track record. The A-10 can go as high as $400+ depending on which supplier you get it from. For me, $350 is a well balanced figure imo.

Bro,
I’ve seen UHD Rip in mkv container. It says 10 bits HDR in x265.
Are these real 4k HDR quality?
Have you tried such files on A500 and Egreat A10? Do they look significantly better in PQ on Egreat since it has hdmi 2.0a?

Thanks

Sorry, I am referring to a full 4K UHD rip in an ISO container. If you are referring to the mkv rip using the HEVC H.265 and BT2020 container (HDR), then yes, there are indeed many. I only have Pacific Rim (mkv rip from the original 4K UHD disc). A-500 has no issue playing back but it did struggle in certain scenes with too many actions. The key question that need to be asked is the bitrate of the rip itself and how powerful the chipset can handle the high bitrate. This is something that I will need time to look at.

Some nerd stats...For instance, a typical 4K @10bit H.265 (10-bit is the minimal bitrate to trigger the HDR mode of your display) should run a bitrate of about 14 - 16Mb/s on average...I realized A-500 did struggle a bit and suffered some framerate drop for fast moving scenes if the encoding bitrate hits a peak of 17.5Mb/s because the HDMI output does not conform to a full band HDMI 2.0. But it is hard to come up with a concrete figure since Pacific Rim is a very fast-action packed flick. A typical dual-layered 4K UHD disc bitrate is around 60 - 80Mb/s if played back on a dedicated 4K UHD player.

A further check on the Sigma chipset used by the PCH A-500 showed the following:

Sigma Designs SMP8758 Dual Code Cortex A9 processor is able to support
10-bit HEVC video decoding up to 2160p @30 fps (4K)
- derived from Cloudmedia official website

If it is ONLY able to support up to 30fps, then it is most definitely not HDMI 2.0/a compliant. It is probably a HDMI 1.4b specs. This might explain why 10-bit color depth @60fps suffers serious stuttering unless we revert to 8-bit which is a SDR (stripped of the HDR meta data). But for normal 2160p (UHD content) @24fps (film refresh rate), it performs okay as long as the encoding bitrate is not higher than 16Mb/s.

Long and short of it, A-10 with the higher end specs like quad-core (4 cores) as opposed to the dual-core (2 cores) and the implementation of HDMI 2.0a (full bandwidth at 18Gbps) vs the HDMI 1.4b (at 10.2Gbps) simply made PCH A-500 feel like an old mule...

Yes, you got that right.

Remember this is a media player. I have tried to connect an external bluray drive to it but i did not recognize though I heard that Android firmware Lollipop 5.1.1 allows one to attach a bluray drive to the USB port but in this case, it failed to recognize. But it didn't really matter if it work as future firmware likely going to break the connectivity once upgraded to Android Nougat (if that's gonna happen).

Besides the connection only for external HDD (Sata based), the eMMC (flash drive) is higher in A10 and of course A10 comes with  a physical on/off power button while A5 does not. Apart from these differences in "design" choices, it sports with the same HiSilicon chipset and RAM and GPU.

flashed 1256 firmware via USB.

1. This firmware rocks - it make the whole bluray menu posters AWESOME :)
2. Overall is super awesome- decodes ATMOS and DTS-X all solid stable
3. Andriod Based- Tons of Solid APPs :)

Need to set back to only 1080p 24Hz  which works for my 1080p BenQ 1070+.
Any above will have handshaking sync video signal issue

Yeap...version 1.2.5.6 is the latest firmware and also happen to be the most stable version to date. I'm glad you like the A10.

And yes, the resolution part is important to set it right the first time to get the display monitor (i.e. TV or projector) to work properly. Make sure you enable the Auto Frequency change option (by default it is OFF) and switching between different media contents with different refresh rate can be done on-the-fly with high accuracy rate.

Now we need to wait patiently for the Android Nougat 7.1 to arrive to make this media player even more powerful.

tried to search but no results, whats the advantages compared to nvidia shield? thks

We are talking about 2 different chipsets here. Tegra X1 chipset is designed more for gaming. It is extremely powerful and not to mention more RAM to boot than the A10 and all the other MIC media players. Furthermore, the A10 is built towards media consumption rather than gaming as its main priority. Hence the customisation on software player (app) for playback of all kinds of media files. The only similarity is the base OS is built around the ASOP.

2. can play hi10p files compared to egreat
3. is bundled with separate remote and gamepad

any disadvantages compared to egreat?

i had nvidia shield gen 1, i used it for awhile before i sold it off. the image was grainy and i didn't like it at all. as desray mentioned, it is designed for gaming than for media despite being more superior device. if you're going to play games along with it, go ahead get it.

Bro, I thought I have already mentioned that the difference and in a way benefits (differentiating factors) of nVidia Shield 4K TV is gaming vs media. In terms of value propositions, NVidia Shield 4K TV is definitely way better than the MIC Egreat (w/o a doubt). You need to know what you really want to get out of these devices. I can't believe I'm repeating myself all over again...if you play Android games more than anything else (in fact these days, more game developers are looking into developing mobile gaming as our smart phones get better and better with each iterations - so powerful that it can now even act as a personal desktop - take a look at Samsung S series and Note series with the addition of the DEX Station with Hauwei Mate 10/10 Pro making its foray into desktop computing by plugging the USB Type C charging cum data cable...but all these are besides the point. I just want to put thing into perspective on how powerful NVidia Tegra X1 chipset can be for a mobile gaming solutions these days).

The main "target audience" in the likes of A5/A10/Zidoo/HiMedia/Zappita 4K is geared towards movie buffs and for those who wish to have the versatility of sideloading 3rd party apps like Kodi with all their TV Addons etc...NVidia Shield 4K TV also can do that as well...dare I say the faster RAM and with a more up-to-date Android OS (like Nougat 7.1), it can easily win the race with its more powerful specs over all the MIC media players....but that's the not the point of this review. A10 knew they can't compete with NVidia in this race but if you look closely, they are not bringing the "fight" to the big brother, they are just focusing on "one aspect" and do it well - i.e. better media consumption and to be the best in that regard. If you look at the marketing and advertising material, you will not see any hyperbole and sensational over-the-top kind of emphasis on gaming for the A10, instead they talked about the full menu navigation for BD ISO/BDMV during last year's CES exhibition held in Germany. NVidia does not subscribe to this benefits of full BD ISO support but 3rd party app like VidOn client utilizing the backbone infrastructure of Kodi/XBMC to make it work, all because it is still running on Android OS (which I've already mentioned briefly in my previous post).

For Nvidia, content streaming from providers like Netflix, Hulu, Vudu etc is MORE IMPORTANT than native media playback in the likes of mkv files for instance (this part can be easily fulfilled by 3rd part app - Kodi with Addons). In short, the emphasis and the marketing focus is different if you compared NVidia with A10 media player. So you need to ask yourself what exactly are you looking for? If you are a gamer and subscriber of Netflix content streaming, then it is a no-brainer, I'll say go for Nvidia Shield 4K TV and don't look back...but if you like to download mkv files from Bittorrent and other P2P platforms because you wanted to keep the movies for repeated watching for great classics like The Shawshank Redemption, JAWS and that LOTR trilogy etc, then A10 and the current batch of MIC media players which I have mentioned in this post will make you a very satisfied customer. I'm not a gamer, hence the review is geared towards movie watching experience from a home theatre perspective.

Hope I am clear.

Gaming on the eGreat/HiMedia and those MIC 4K HDR players is great and acceptable. But as an avid game fanatic then these devices are probably not the ideal Android box or gaming powerhouse for you.

Bro, that's an old news...eventually Netflix claimed they will support Atmos. Even Roku streaming also can, I really don't see an issue with Atmos pass through making its way to Netflix. Perhaps Netflix think PQ is more important (like Dolby Vision) than SQ at this juncture.

It seems more and more members are interested in this media player as I have received several PMs asking me where to buy. Frankly, I don't have any China supplier contact so I just ordered mine through Lazada Singapore (for peace of mind) due to their return/refund policy assurance.

For those who want to save on some $$$ (frankly just a few dollars difference imo), you can try other online stores to purchase but at your own risk just because you want to save a few bucks.

Some have asked me to show proof the playback of a HEVC H.265 4K clip encoded in 10 bit with HDR (BT2020 container). Here's a look at the mkv clip encoded using the those settings running on the A-10. The projector I'm using is the JVC X7000 DiLA projector.

Observe the video bitrate hovers at a constant bitrate (CBR) of around 34Mbps - 42Mbps. I am streaming this clip from my NAS over a Powerline network and surprisingly, it played flawlessly w/o a hitch even though the audio track is in HD lossless (DTS-HD MSTR). Fast forwarding and rewinding never once cause any stutter. The difference of a Quad-Core processor truly make a difference in decoding performance. This clearly explain why HDR, Dolby Atmos and 4K compression using HEVC codec (H.265) by content streaming company like Netflix, Hulu and Vudu spent so much time into 4K.

It seems more and more members are interested in this media player as I have received several PMs asking me where to buy. Frankly, I don't have any China supplier contact so I just ordered mine through Lazada Singapore (for peace of mind) due to their return/refund policy assurance.

For those who want to save on some $$$ (frankly just a few dollars difference imo), you can try other online stores to purchase but at your own risk just because you want to save a few bucks.

mine arrived yesterday from shoppe

Not at this point...need to wait for Egreat to upgrade the Android OS to at least Nougat 7.1. Currently, still using the Lollipop OS. Hopefully by year end, Egreat can deliver what it promised the consumers. HiMedia and Zidoo already using Marshmallow and Nougat, so Egreat better hurry!

Do I still need this if I can run Netflix via my OLED TV?

Also, this is actually more expensive than an nVidia Shield - which goes for under SGD 300 via Amazon. The Egreat A10 is around $50 to $100 more ex.

What's the benefit of the A10?

So the main draw is the BD ISO Menu support. I did a quick search and apparently Shield can't or doesn't to that well.

If you are not aware of this ... please take note that eGreat no longer has the HDMI licence for their product and not sure what this mean for future product.

Hope they didn't pay the licensing fees promptly resulting their licence was terminated in August 2017 and this can be confirmed at HDMI.org.

No experience with eGreat but believe there shouldn't be any network share issues with Synology NAS. Basically, just include the eGreat as a user with the appropriate rights and is good to go. :D

Yes, the concept is the same like any other media player platform. Egreat A10 is quite easy to get the NFS and SMB and even DLNA working so long in the past, you have no problem playing on other types of media player, say PopcornHour or Himedia as an example.

Thanks for the info Sunblock. Based on this information, I would not recommend members to get the Egreat media players. This is indeed not good for future development. For peace of mind, I strongly urge members to consider getting the Himedia or the Zidoo.

I have posted a query to the Egreat team regarding this HDMI adopter status and its implications, if any for future development of their products...but until there is some positive updates from Egreat regarding this HDMI licensing issue, Egreat will not be a brand that I will recommend in spite of the positive experience I have with this product :)

I will post any update on this issue as and when I get a response from them.

Don't worry bro, you'll still get the product when it arrives. It appears that it will not hinder the developments of the media player itself except in some countries, particualrly those in the N.America where there is some kind of stop-order imposed on media players that have not renewed their latest HDMI licensing adoption. I am waiting to see if Egreat staff will respond to my query on this issue. Chief of all, whether it will affect future developments of the media player itself.

The reason I am putting a caveat in the title (i.e Not recommended!) is to give members a heads-up should they feel uncomfortable getting one. The last thing I want is to be blamed for a DOA product that I recommended. I have no affiliation with Egreat and my review are entirely based on my personal experience (a positive one notwithstanding) but I will not hesitate to put a disclaimer to my review if I happen to come across some negativity on the product I am using.

But rest assured, Egreat team will continue with the development of their A5/A10/A11. Hope I did not give you a fright...LoL

Here's some follow-up from me to Rita, one of the staff managing the Egreat community forum. Although she did respond to my concern but I am still not convinced and satisfied. For those interested to follow any further updates on this HDMI licensing thingy, you can visit this link from time to time to get the latest updates (if any).

Follow the discussion here: http://en.egreatworld.com/comunity/index.php?threads/hdmi-lost-licence-usa-seizure.1036/ (http://en.egreatworld.com/comunity/index.php?threads/hdmi-lost-licence-usa-seizure.1036/)

Meanwhile this is what I wrote to Rita in a separate conversation.

"Hi Rita, you need to be more open with this as it becomes increasingly hard for me as a reviewer to recommend the A10 media player to my peers if this HDMI licensing issue is not resolved soon. Consumers these days are very resourceful, any negativity on a product will quickly reach the masses these days, thanks to the internet era. I think Egreat should, at the very least, issue an official statement in your official webpage to come clean and explain thing clearly to the consumers. It will show Egreat's future commitment on their products and instil the confidence back into the market or else your rivals like HiMedia or equivalent will topple your company in no time.

I really liked the performance of my A10 and what it can deliver but seriously I really cannot bring myself to heartily recommend this product to my friends and colleagues if Egreat is not an approved member of the HDMI Org. As you can see, it will affect the product credibility and hurt the sales eventually. I urge Egreat to get this sorted out as quickly as possible or at least broadcast an official statement addressing this to calm your consumers.

What say you and and Egreat management team to truly show what Egreat is make of? Hope to hear from you and your management soon."

Frankly I don't have much faith that Egreat is going to respond in a positive light. We'll see how it pan out...meanwhile I still do not recommend anyone to get the A5/A10 at this point.

Be warned, its quite "painful" to watch...LoL!!!

On the side note, interestingly they even dare to sell their own version of HDMI AV Splitter which featured HDMI 2.0a when the HDMI adopter status still "questionable" ??? Sigh...

Looking forward for the continued developments in firmware updates.

By the way, just a quick bug to inform, many users can’t seem to lock in 4K 60Hz at 10-bit. Every time the device powered down or reboot, it will revert back to 4K 60Hz at 8-bit. Pls get the engineers to look into this for a prompt firmware update. Apart from that, I really have no complaints about this media player.

Hi Desray,

Thanks for your support on our Egreat.

1. Yes, we do have worked for a long time on Android 7. Hope that we can have a beta firmware in Jan, 2018. You know, our Egreat brand devices are professional Media Player, which is not like Himedia or Zidoo OTT Box. You can feel the difference on the price and functions. As our all users feedback, the most important thing for our player is stable. So this is why we won't test our users until the Android 7 firmware is stable enough.

2. Also, the new function music player is coming soon.

3. We must state that HDMI license won't effect our Egreat devices developing and selling. Egreat devices are selling good in EU and North America market. Also, as you can check, most of Player manufacturer is expired on the website, such Dune, Zappiti etc. HDMI interface is only the part of our player, and the HDMI interface supplier is paying the license fee directly. So don't worry about this. :)

Yours faithfully
Rita

Hi Rita, since the forum is down and I can’t post...can you share with me the likely timeline for the Android 7.1 OS firmware to be released for Egreat A10? Roughly when can we expect it to roll out? I understand that other rivals like Himedia and Zidoo already rolled out Android 7.1 a long time ago...From Aug Egreat have mentioned that the engineers are working on it, now almost year end, how long more to go?

The next question lies with the HDMI licensing with HDMI.org. Has it been resolved? Any negative implications for buyers as I will like to recommend the A10 to my friends and colleagues but I can’t if Egreat not going to give any kind of assurance moving forward. Egreat need to instil confidence into consumers when such news surfaced. I hope you can give me some updates on this? Is there any plan to renew the license with HDMI.org?

Thanks for the update on the forum.

Hello Desray,

Thanks for your attention on our forum.

Yes, the forum is attacked by the hacker for days. No one can post or edit on the forum. Our engineers are fixing it. But still need a little more time to recovery.

Hope it will be okay soon.

Since Egreat has responded to my queries and I think it did instil me with some sense of confidence with their timeline for future developments. I have decided to "lift" the "Not Recommended" caveat off from this thread for now until there are confirmed sources that the HDMI licensing (adoption status) does indeed affect the overall reliability of their products.

The latest firmware 1.2.6.0 should resolve most of the network share issues. But even at 1.2.5.6, I have no problem detecting files from my Synology DS-212+ via NFS protocol. Make sure you do all the necessary NFS permission settings in your NAS.

Thanks KR for the link.  Soon after I forwarded my fan review to their lady staff, Rita. I also receive the same invitation template from Egreat as the AVSforum reviewer for the Singapore market.

"Egreat asked me to add contact details in case someone wants to sell Egreat products. In case you are interested please contact Morgan Lee (sales1@egreatworld.com, WhatsApp/WeChat +86 131 2885 1772, Skype: lijuan19890320)."

In fact, if I may point out obvious, just in case members didn't realize it until now. Although I maybe using Egreat, Sunblock is using HiMedia and Wilber using Zidoo...all 3 are actually utilizing the same Hisilicon SoC. The only difference comes down to the interface (GUI), implementation of the features, Android OS versioning and its very own proprietary software player to support its broad range of new and old video formats that presently exist (e.g. VP9 for YouTube 4K, HEVC H.265 etc) and of course lastly its build and end user support. If you decide to pay more, it is simply because of its built (e.g. 2 HDMI inputs vs one or 3 USB 3.0 ports vs two etc).

In terms of software developments, this is the biggest challenge that all MIC media player manufacturers will need to stand out among the rest of its competitors. For hardware capabilities, ALL should be the same - meaning if I can implement BD ISO full menu navigation, I dun see why the other rivals using the same SoC chipset unable to do so...

For synology NAS
Go to Control Panel
Select Shared Folder ( U will see a list of your shared folder)
Select the shared folder & click edit
In the popup window, click NFS permission tab
Click create & you will see a pop-up window
1) Host: 192.168.XX.XXX (enter Your Egreat IP, check in Egreat player under network)
2) Privilege: Read only or your choice
3) Squash: map to all users or your choice
4) Security: sys or your choice
Check all the 3 boxes below & click OK
Note down the volume no & folder name

Go to Egreat & select add NFS server and follow the instruction
Input the volume & folder name as " \volumeXX\Folder name "

If I miss out a step let me know

Hope the above helps  :) :) :)

yes updated 1.2.5.6

Unable to playback BD ISO files though
Those which I had created all cannot play.
When I start to play, whole screen turned blank it just stayed that way till I hit RETURN button to quit playback
I used IMGBURN to create the ISO files
Btw, the ISOs are Region B movies.
Changing the Region Setting on the Egreat didnt work

If u followed the instructions to add NFS privilege permission to the dot, it should work. There is absolutely no need for the second step to  manually add NFS server in the A10. Use the browse for network function will do. The A10 should be able to detect the NAS shared folder.

I have tried several times adding NFS privilege permission to a specific folder by specifying the IP address of the A10
While the A10 was able to detect the NAS, it showed ERROR when I tried to open the folder
It seems that some reported similar problems in the Egreat forum.
Anyway, I will remove all permissions and redefine this weekend.

I have similar problem with my Syn 1815+, Egreat detected the folder but when u click the folder, no files is displayed

That's why have to manually enter the shared folder info from the NAS.

Yes. That was what I encountered. I seem to be having problems with The Network Share and Add NFS Server options on the A10.
Add SAMBA Server is ok and was able to define and access the shared folders on the NAS.
I will check the NAS firmware but am pretty sure its the latest

Can share how you "manually enter the shared folder info from the NAS"?

Did you notice it also ?

Perhaps it might be due to my normal SONY LED-TV (1080p/60) ?

You can try Qoo10. I bought a Q10 Pro, though, not an EGreat A10. The interesting thing is that although the seller does not provide a warranty, you can buy a sort of short term warranty/insurance when you place the order. The insurance is from NTUC Income. Of course, this increases the cost, but I thought it was worth it for peace of mind.

Hi ALL, just got my A5 a few days ago and was exploring through it, overall I was happy with the performance in terms of the PQ and SQ but one thing that is annoying me is the wifi connection. I tried to stream video from my WD MYCLOUD and it keeps on loading and suddenly hang and a pop up message come out indicating egreat player not responding and asking me to wait or quit. My A5 is just sitting next to my router and was wondering could it be some configuring issue I need to do ?? Any advised will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Instead of relying on Wifi for movie streaming, pls do consider getting a much more "reliable" connection using Powerline. It is not expensive and I guarantee that it will resolve all your streaming issues. Just remember to get one with the gigabit connection. It can even be the cheap TP Link brand.

Just curious how does a 4K HDR media player stack up against mini PC?
Title: Re: EGreat A10 4K HDR media player (with review)
Post by: desray on December 07, 2017, 07:35
Just curious how does a 4K HDR media player stack up against mini PC?

This is NOT an apple-to-apple comparison. There are stark differences if we look at it in a more profound way. For instance, what does a HTPC does vs what a "media" player does? The answer is clear, HTPC does more than just "Home Theater", it is a "PC" in its very core form. Ask yourself what are some of the bugbears you have with using a PC (in your daily life), there are a lot of "system services" which takes up a lot of resources and CPU power etc...not to mention the risk of malware (but I'm digressing)...in short, if the "objective" here is for home entertainment as in "media" consumption and nothing else, then media player is the way to go. The PQ of a 4K HDR on a media is contingent upon the capability of your display card which can easily chalk up $1K but you are buying for that gaming experience for high-frame rate gaming 4K experience. For me, 4K is 4K as long it is in its native resolution (can be 3840 x 2160p or PC resolution at 4096 x 2160p), so long it is a 1:1 pixel mapped to your display which is capable of true 4K presentation, then there is really not difference in terms of PQ between the two.

For me, it is very clear that if you want good 4K PQ, media player should suffice unless you want to do "more" than just viewing media content and wanted to do a display out to hook up to a gaming compatible (high-frame rate that utilize Freesync for instance) display monitor - i.e. dual purpose but don't want to have a separate device to play media and PC gaming, then HTPC is the way to go but be prepared to shell out more $$$ which when properly setup can buy you a high-end 4K bluray player.

Hope I answer your question...

Yes, the A10 does HDR but at HDR10 at the moment even though the HiSilicon chipset is capable to handle DV.

Sure you can but be mindful that we are talking about 2 different chip makers here...HiSilicon vs Sigma. In terms of R&D developments news front...very little is heard from Sigma. I have not Google Sigma on its future or upcoming roadmap, maybe it’s a good time to Google for more info now.

Eh bro...why did you sound so surprised that this media player can playback true 4K UHD content? You do know that this thread is talking about this little device's ability to playback 4K UHD content with HDR10 (but not Dolby Vision due to licensing issue with Dolby have yet to get green light for the go-ahead)...

Not just EGreat but also HiMedia Q10 Pro and other compatible devices utilizing the HiSil chipset.

This is in response to those who have previously asked me whether is SMurfs UHD 4K BD ISO with full navigation menu support the one and only title supported by Egreat. It appears that there are plenty others as well based on this screenshot.

Quite confusing as it advertised as 4K Blu-Ray HDD Media Player.
So i thought it was a physical UHD Blu-Ray disc player with HDD media capabilities.

Not at all...if it is a 4K UHD "player", it would have advertised as 4K UHD bluray player...and NOT 4K Bluray HDD "Media Player". Make sense?

For those who are annoyed by the fact that Egreat is still using Lollipop 5.1.1 Android firmware which prevents you from getting that 4K resolution for your Youtube clips. You may want to try to install the Youtube for Android TV app. You can replace it the stock Youtube app from Egreat A10/A11 and switch to this much more friendly and easier to navigate version of the Youtube app. More importantly, it allows full native 4K playback on your 4K OLED TV/Projector.

Download here: https://goo.gl/vW23iv (https://goo.gl/vW23iv)

Simply download the apk file and navigate to All Files and select the thumb drive where you stored the apk file and hit "Install". Done!

For those who wish to buy A5, I would advise you to go for A10. I just received my A5 and the remote has no backlit!! It's a different remote from A10.
Sian.

For those who don't like to use the physical remote or like Jagdpanzer who have a A5 without backlit remote controller. You may want to download this app to control your A5/A10/A11...in fact ALL Android based media players/TV boxes will be able to use this app as a Wifi-remote. I am currently using this app (free but contain ads). For an ad-free version, be prepare to shell out US$5.00 but I personally think it is worth the purchase. The developers are from HK/China, so Egreat, Zidoo, HiMedia, even Nvidia Shield TV also no problem.

I'm happy to report that the 4K@60 YCbCr420 10bit has been resolved in this latest Beta. For those having problem with OTA, you may wish to try the USB update route. **Do bear in mind that if you decide to choose the latter route, use the USB 2.0 port instead of the USB 3.0  port for update to be successful...**

Bro, you need to share more details on the Dell monitor like what model for starters...Did you go to (More settings) under General option and check the HDMI Auto Adaptation option? By default it is disabled. Check it and let me know whether you able to get any image.

Why not consider HiMedia or Zidoo? Both are more value for money and iirc they all updated to Android Nougat firmware while Egreat A10/A11 still using the Lollipop 5.1.1 firmware. Of course, that is not to say that Lollipop vs Nougat will affect the PQ of the 4K image as image processing lies with the chipset - and ALL 3 of them (HiMedia, Ziddo and Egreat) all using the same chipset.

Still doing some final read up. you think HiMedia or Zidoo is more VFM and yet don't sacrifice PQ/SQ?

By the way, found this side by side comparison:

Bro, I can't answer that except that I know bro Sunblock is using the Himedia Q10 Pro and he is quite satisfied with its performance. Bro Sunblock is one of the members that did a lot of research and have the opportunity to play with numerous media players over the years hence I urge members looking to get a media player to consider the Himedia Q10 Pro as well.

As for Egreat A10/A11, I am very satisfied with its performance but this is NOT to be construed as a thread to promote Egreat products...but if you are comfortable to join the Egreat user community, I'm more than happy to welcome you on board. :)

Layman explanation. This is to ensure 4K content is displayed at its native resolution (3840 x 2160p for UHD resolution ONLY). For 1080p content, it can be upscaled to 4K and output to a 4K display - e.g. a 4K Projector or 4K OLED TV.

You can allow Egreat to do the upscaling in this case, do not engage video upconversion in your AVR.

To those having problem (i.e. got sound no picture) playing back 4K clips encoded in HEVC H.265 or 4K BD ISO AFTER the latest Beta firmware update, pls make sure you do a full factory reset. It will clear the memory and cache. This action will resolve this "got sound, no picture" issue.

Hope it helps...

Not sure what happen there...but I have no problem with 4K60 @10bit 4:2:0.

Select 4K@60Hz and it confirm then select the colorspace and bitrate.

Thanks Desray. The problem was solved via a factory reset. I find that normaL BD content, if set to 4K resolution the picture quality seems to be out. Is there any other settings that should be considered?

I heard from another user that he did have stutter playback issue when playing back media content from a local HDD. However I did not experience it myself. According to him, it happens mid way through some of the movies. Not immediate. I need to test it out myself before I can comment on this...since most of the time, I am doing streaming from my NAS and playback from my external USB HDD using a HDD docking station.

I have checked with my friend and he told me that the most recent firmware updates resolved all his playback woes. So it is not an issue associated exclusively for playback of media using a HDD connected to the device itself.

For your case, it has something to do with your HDD.

There is no clear definitive answer to your question...the only recommendation I can offer is to ENSURE that you do a proper safe removal of the external HDD (connected using USB connection) after use. This will help to reduce the instance of bad sector formation and of course media file corruption.

Good.  Buffering always linked to cable, file corrupt or not good when transferring. Redownload the target file will be ok.  Cheers

This is probably due to the Auto Adjust for display frequency upon change in media content or switching from a film (24Hz) to the menu GUI (60Hz). If you want to "avoid" signal change which result in "loss" of signal, you may wish to disable that option. iBut mind you, this will playback all content in 60Hz which may not be ideal for movie playback.

By the way, how come the Next Chapter button on the remote control does not work? It does not work for all the files. I have to use the slider button to skip.

Guys, you have to more specific with your line of questions...for instance, pls state the type of media files (e.g. BD ISO or MKV, TS, MP4 etc) For the MKV files, it really depends on whether there is any inclusion of the Chapter markers to begin with. NOT all mkv movies comes with embedded chapters. Please hit the Option menu to bring up the left menu and go to Chapters and see if there is any Chapter markers avail. If there is and hitting the Next Chapter doesn't work, report this bug in the Egreat community forum or comment here so that I can consolidate and forward it to Rita of Egreat.

my A10 arrived today and I'll get a chance to fumble around with it when I get home this evening. my primary use case is to play files that my Oppo 105D can't handle. this would be the 2nd android device that I've ever owned - the first being the Onkyo DP-X1, which is a pretty cool DAP. most of you guys here seem to be very savvy with Android so do share with me some of the essential apk that you guys have installed, to maximise the capabilities of the Egreat. thank you :)

I have also purchased base on the good reviews here and used it for almost 2 weeks. I must say this is truly the exact type of media player that I am looking for.

Apart from the occasional glitch, I think this is a very good product and worth every single cent that I paid for.

This thread has almost covered most of the problems that I faced with this product and fortunately there are solutions provided by desray and other bros so setting up was a simple task.

Thanks for the brilliant recommendation.

The remote control has a next button but it does not work even if the file online menus (mkv, BDMV etc) have Next Chapter option.
I don't have this issue with Popcorn remote control.

For BDMV and BD ISO file, I have no problem with the chapter functions based on my personal experience with about 7 to 8 BD ISO files I have been playing... But I do agree with you that for Mkv files, its a hit or miss. Due to the different software used for encoding the mkv media files, it becomes hard to find a solution to it. One way is to do remux it using mktoolnix aka mkvmerge utility to add the chapter markers to see if it works. I haven't have the time to do remuxibg these days.

And I also agreed with you that in terms of stability when playback Mkv media, PCH is still the KING!

I am able to view egreat in my windows network explorer, however I am not able to access. I have a 4 TB 3.5" HDD attached to A10, both A10 & Win 10 are in the same network, also checked all setting in A10, believe samba setting is tick.

you need to change the audio output setting in your AVR for this to work.  and make sure your TV setting for internal speakers is set appropriately as well.

There is a possibility that your Egreat media player has been "compromised"...hacked if you are connected to the internet 24/7! Did you ever switch off when not in use?

Yes. Literally switch it off from the mains when not in use. What router are you using? Be careful with the recent VPNFilter threat that infects some of the routers - e.g. Linksys, TP Link...

No worries lar, this is just my worst case scenario assessment. Probably not the case.

But these days as long as u have IoT devices or equivalent - constantly connected to the internet 24/7, the hackers would actually attack such devices like Set top boxes, media players, IP Camera to name a few in order to gain access to your main computer which houses all your important personal data like credit card details etc.

It does make a difference when you want to playback a high bitrate file...

bro, would you elaborate on your comment above which was about the difference between NFS and Samba? I haven't been playing with my A10 since the World Cup started. today when I turned it on to update to the latest FW, the OTA update said I am already at the latest when actually I am at 1.2.9.0. I think I will try the USB update method later.

meawhile I also notice that I couldn't login to my Disk station anymore. previously I was connected via SMB using the search function. I don't remember making any special config on my NAS for that to happen.

it was only when I was searching for a possible solution here when I saw your comment. I've since enabled NFS on my NAS and followed the instructions posted by another bro. now I am able to map to my shared folders and I can see the folder contents. poster view still doesn't seem to be 100% though...

there is a free alternative to the physical remote called CetusPlay - do give it a try. it is available for both iOS and Android I believe. Desray also posted about it a few pages back. hopefully that would solve your current issue.

After waiting for the longest time...I have just received news from Rita that Egreat finally released the new Android 7 (Nougat) beta firmware for the A5 and A10.
Here's the download for those who wanted to test drive it: http://data.egreatworld.com/A10BD_EN_N_Firmware_20180824_v2.0.1.2beta.rar (http://data.egreatworld.com/A10BD_EN_N_Firmware_20180824_v2.0.1.2beta.rar)

Some of you may encounter problem updating the firmware if you use the normal route - i.e. USB 2.0 to do the update via USB thumb drive. This won't work as you are most likely to encounter update error. Fear not, use the recovery mode method instead.

 ;)

Hi Desray,

Use the recovery method.

First of all, format the thumb drive in FAT 32 format. Upload the 4 files into the root of the thumb drive.

To go into Recovery mode:

1. Switch off the device. Use the on/off toggle switch at the rear of device.
2. Plug the thumb drive to USB 2.0 (white colored) input.
3. Use a sharp pointy object like a safety pin or paper clip. Insert into the RST pin hole.
4. With the pointy object still inserted inside the RST pin hole, switch on the device. You will not see the VFD display on the device showing anything like HELLO.
5. Instead watch out for the circular ring (with rainbow effects), once you see that on your display, you know the device has picked up the new firmware image from the thumb drive.
6. To verify, hit the App Assistant app hit Info and you will see that the firmware is now updated to 7.0 (Nougat)

 ;)

Guys, after you upgraded the firmware to Nougat 7.1. You will still need to update another set of files to get Google Playstore and Play services to work if you wish to install and play google apps. The package will also include the new Youtube.apk that will playback 4K clips flawlessly.

After updating to the new firmware 7.1. Download the service pack here (http://www.mediafire.com/file/6zpqx1w32qd2vc6/update_addon_pack%255B1.0%255D_for_Android_7.zip/file).

1. Rename update_addon_pack[1.x]_for_Android_7.zip to update.zip
2. Copy update.zip in to the root of a USB pen drive FAT32 formated
3. Insert the USB pen drive into USB 2.0 port of the Egreat box
4. Go to Setting/General/More settings/System upgrade/sda1
5. If update.zip is recognize Press OK to process update
6. Egreat box will show Android 7 circle rainbow and proceed to update the firmware with addon pack
7. Box will auto-reboot when update finished

Done! Now you can log in to your Google Play Store to restore your apps and play Youtube with full login credentials. You will see your subscription channels.

Bro,

I am trying to confirm whether the LG C7 is actually displaying video in HDR mode.

From the A10 I play Youtube 4K HDR video from the Youtube App (ver 2.03.06).
On the LG C7, it says 2160p but NO HDR indicator.

When I play back from a 4K HDR disc Oppo 203. The C7 will display a HDR10 info on the screen

What'e your experience?

Hi WIM, it's confirmed that HDR mode does not kick in with this beta firmware.

WARNING: Too many bugs...not ready for prime time release! Not recommended to members to upgrade to the latest Nougat firmware (7.1.1)

There has been a lot of bugs that need to be ironed out and now I know why Egreat was reluctant to jump from the stable lollipop firmware (5.1.1) over to the Nougat (7.1.1). It affects the most important thing which I simply cannot stand...the overall video quality on my movies and the screw up by Nougat on the video signal levels (RGB Vs Limited) amongst other bugs I have discovered along the way.

I have decided to revert to the last beta firmware using lollipop firmware and everything worked smoothly as before. The only gripe for the last firmware is the broken Google play services affecting the Play Store. But that is something I can live with.

Hello all,

What's the maximum hard disk can the Egreat able to read(front Built In-Tray)?
Is it 8tb?  ???

Which hard disk would you recommend to store 4k movies & to have a smooth playback?

Yes. Support up to 8TB hard disk capacity.

Any sata hdd with 7200 rpm will do just fine.

It took quite a long time to update via the OTA option. The only difference or rather new implementation is the movie wall poster aggregation and the presentation layers becomes more robust and faster in this latest firmware update. Apart from that, I don’t see any changes.

I'm quite pissed with Egreat development team at this moment. But that aside, I think the new Egreat A13 does indeed looked very well-polished. And as always, the Egreat team are very good with their hardware and build but when it comes to software updates...Sigh.

Looks like Egreat is still listed as a terminated HDMI adopter by HDMI.org. Based on this reason itself I would not consider this brand.

I wouldn't be too concern about this...as long as the player deliver what "it suppose" to do and do it e"great". At the end of the day, this is a media player as such my emphasis on "stringent HDMI certification" will be the least of my concern here.

You will need to go to the Poster tab. Re-add the location of where your movies reside.

Does the A10 support Dolby Vision? Seems it was supposed to but didn't, waiting for licensing by Dolby?

Yes, the hardware is able to support DV BUT like all MIC products, licensing from Dolby requires $$$ and Dolby has so far been very stringent in the licensing of their proprietary IP and in this case Dolby Vision to media player manufacturers. Only a handful of brands supported. So no, Egreat will probably never able to playback DV on all their media players.
