Title: 4k media player NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV

The NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV was launched back in May with the intent to dominate the over-the-top set-top-box (OTT STB) landscape. Premium features such as full HDMI 2.0a support and HEVC Main10 decoding enabled the coveted Netflix 4K certification. No other set top box (including the recently announced 2015 Apple TV and the Amazon 4K Fire TV) has anything close to the SHIELD Android TV in terms of advertised hardware and software capabilities. Our review, however, pointed out a few missed opportunities. Aside from the experience with Android TV as a software platform (something for which NVIDIA is not directly responsible), we had indicated that NVIDIA could have done a better job of codec licensing and configurability to cater to HTPC enthusiasts. Today, NVIDIA is announcing an OTA update to address some of those issues.

Today's OTA update (v2.0) brings a notable set of features for local media streaming

Expanded codec and container support:
Adds pass-through support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio lossless audio*
Adds MPEG2, VC-1, and WMV9 hardware-acceleration
Adds M2TS, ASF, and WMV container support for VC-1
Adds WMA audio support (including WMA Pro, and WMA Lossless)
Currently, the above set of features are available for use in the native Android Video and Photo apps. NVIDIA is working closely with third-party app developers (including Kodi and MX Player) to ensure that these media players will also be able to take advantage of the newly added features.

The other important feature that is being made available is the ability to set the display refresh rate to 23.976 Hz. Currently, it is a static setting available under Settings > Device > HDMI > Resolution. Only 60 Hz (US) / 50 Hz (Europe) and 23.976 Hz are currently available, and the UI is also set to the selected refresh rate. However, NVIDIA expects third-party app developers to be able to dynamically alter the display refresh rate based on the content frame rate using the new APIs. This will be important since consumers should not be playing games or actually be navigating the user interface at 23.976 Hz. Syncing up the display refresh rate to the content frame rate should hopefully turn out to be a transparent exercise with the third-party apps.

The new firmware also brings support for overscan adjustment (particularly useful for display sinks that tend to overscan, resulting in a cropped view of the interface). Most TVs don't need this.

Other enhancements include native 4K rendering for select Android games (Beach Buggy Racing, Bombsquad, Hardwood Solitaire IV, Riptide GP 2, Kosmik Revenge, Video Poker Duel, Leo's Fortune, Machinarium, Meltdown, Never Alone, Samurai II, and Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders), ability to transfer data between USB storage and a microSD card, ability to manually turn off the SHIELD controller and lowering the audio latency by as much as 40ms compared to standard Android. The last aspect is especially important for gaming, and it will be one of the prime reasons to pick up the update before checking out the GeForce NOW cloud game streaming service that is getting launched today.

NVIDIA has also updated the table comparing the SHIELD Android TV to the competition. The latest version is reproduced below. As usual, these are NVIDIA's claims and need to be taken with a pinch of salt.

We did go through the various aspects with concrete 'yes' or 'no' answers and the table seems to line up well with the actual specifications of the competitors' products. The SHIELD Android TV continues to justify the premium flagship tag despite recent entrants such as the 2015 Apple TV and the Amazon 4K Fire TV. NVIDIA's willingness to also focus on local media playback is good news for the general consumers as well as HTPC enthusiasts. For this reason alone, we can and do recommend the SHIELD Android TV over competing OTT STBs.

Why would somebody with an existing Apple TV upgrade to new Apple TV when options such as NVIDIA Shield are present. The specs on paper seem to blow Apple out of water.

But nevertheless, most likely Apple will sell more units in 1 day on launch, than NVIDIA has ever sold.

But it looks a extremely competent product. Anybody tried earlier versions before?

The reason I still want the new ATV is because I can access my central music database and I can airplay too. If Nvidia can do these tasks I am more than happy to give it a shot. But for pure Android box fans, this is probably the top end stuff.

Got to buy and try it out, the price crawl me back though I'm tempted to cart out now. I have similar views with Dizzy over new ATV.

The willingness of Nvidia to work with Kodi Community(HTPC enthusiasts) is crucial as feedbacks had been taken to provide additional video and sound formats support for local media playback .

So if you take out the Apple Music, there is nothing in the new ATV that challenges the NVIDIA shield. NVIDIA will support 4K streaming, which even the new ATV does not support. I am a apple guy and have 4 devices in my house, but just cant get my head around lot of features which ATV should have had in the new version.

Kodi 15.2 RC3 now supports the correct Auto framerate switching.

But unfortunately, we have to wait for Kodi 16.0 final release if you want DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD support.

I just got a discount code from Amazon for US$50 off for Sheild TV/Pro.  I have put it in my checkout list and shipping is also free now.  So basically I will only be paying US$150 for this item.

You may want to check your email if you got this discount code as well. I think I put this item in my "Saved for later" list.  Will be confirming the purchase later in the afternoon.

I ordered mine on 1 Nov and chose free shipping.  It got shipped on 3 Nov and was enroute via iParcel.  When I checked today's status, the parcel got rejected by the shipping agent and has been returned back to Amazon.

Had a quick online chat with Amazon customer service as to why the shipment was rejected.  After checking, Amazon decided to ship a "replacement order" free of charge via Global Priority Shipping. Hope to receive it early next week.  So I am basically getting a free Nvidia Shield TV. Yeah!  That's what I call Customer Service.  I would have just settled for free Priority Shipping.  Didn't expect them to give me the unit for free.

Another update; I tried to playback 4K clips, direct output from Shield ATV->Denon 7200WA->Panny 4K tv. Clips are located in portable hdd, my desktop system and Synology NAS. The playback is smooth and no shuttering at all. I'm using Kodi app to playback.

Sadly, the audio codec still a bummer, Atmos is out, my AVR reflects PCM.

I received mine yesterday as well.  I wonder if the bundled HDMI cable is 2.0 compliant.  Now I need to go get another HDMI 2.0 cable since I have none at the moment since it will be hooked up direct to my new Denon AVR.

Its able to play 4K MKV files smoothly.  Nothing much to setup.  Go to Google Play store to download Kodi (XBMC) and you are up and running.  You just need to setup Kodi preferences to suit your needs. But will have to wait for updated Kodi to support DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD audio passthrough.

Shipping from Amazon to Singapore is free. Direct shipping.  Currently Amazon has an offer for SATV+Remote for USD175.

I had been playing with it on and off due to my workloads recently. I will provide pictures update when available.

I'm pretty pleased with the picture quality from Nvidia Shield SATV. Be it on upscale or 4K basis,  via USB connection by portable hdd or streaming off NAS/Desktop via DLNA.

The streaming via DLNA is smooth without jitter. The streaming I had tested so far, 4K streaming via YouTube, 4K Netflix via app & 4K video clips using Kodi. All are playback at native except 4K Netflix which is subjected streaming but definitely better 1080p resolution. I can't complain much on picture quality, it performs well.

Audio wise, bummer if you ask me. Why? True that Nvidia has updated DTS HD audio codec in fw 2.1 BUT it is available in its native video app. The ideal app in SATV is Kodi or Plex but they are capable of DTS or Dolby at the moment. However, there is update by Kodi that it will support DTS HD in next update. Fingers crossed! Like I mentioned earlier, Atmos is out, so far, Nvidia yet to comment on it BUT I believe it will be added, matter of WHEN?

As for playback of files, Kodi has no issues with usual suspects like MKV, ISO or MT2S BUT no go on BDMV native. For BDMV, you have to select the BDMV index file to playback the main MT2S file directly.

As for apps, I have tried Kodi, Plex, Netflix and Hulu Plus. Both Kodi and Plex are pretty good, if one prefers simple GUI, go for Kodi, if one prefers Artwork, no brainer will be Plex but do more that Kodi is able to load basis artwork. For Netflix and Hulu plus, the plus point is Netflix 4K streaming vs my previous Apple TV and picture quality by SATV is pretty good.

If one got no rush to for a 4K media player, hold your bullets on SATV if audio codec is your concern but no doubt it has the BEST specifications at the moment. It is the only media player with 60fps.

I will try out the gaming part when I got more free time.

Amazon is having a promotion at USD174.99 for Nvidia Shield SATV with Remote FOC till end of Dec 2015. I bought mine at USD149.99 for standalone Nvidia Shield. Paid additional USD49.99 for the Remote, it seems expensive but I had a hands on it, it is equally sleek if compare with Apple TV's remote. The pricey tag is due to voice enabled feature.

I am currently using Kodi on my Minix X7 on my treadmill setup and AcRyan as my main player.
My main grip on ATVs is the remote. My Harmony can be programmed with codes for Shield, but it does not seem to have a wide range of buttons. I cannot pause videos directly. Have to click OK first, bring up UI and then use cursor to highlight the button I want to access then click on OK. Pretty cumbersome compared to dedicated players like ACRyan.

Anyone has gotten around this? Also, does shield have smart remote that you can point the screen with?

Thanks!

I meant a remote which you can point at your screen and a pointer will appear. Kinda like an air mouse.
I don't think nVidia has it. Wondering if there's a 3rd party one which works with it.

This shield remote does not have dedicated fast forward/pause buttons.. so how is the experience with Kodi?

Enable HDMI-CEC function on the SATV settings menu and you can use the Start/Stop/Pause/Play buttons including the Left/Right/Up/Down buttons on your TV remote to control the SATV.

I just bought the 16gb model + remote. It's $150 now and includes free shipping. Sad thing is it will only arrive dec 11-18. Hopefully kodi on this satv will perform better than kodi (stuttering audio when passthrough) on my mini xiaomi box.

Based on my brief experience on Kodi in HiMedia, it is pretty decent, it is capable to output Atmos via pass through with no lag.

End of the day, it is up to Nvidia to push out the audio codec support and let Kodi for Nvidia to pick it up and release to Nvidia SATV users.

So far, aside from using it for Netflix and Hulu plus, I spent most of my time on YouTube. It is running smoothly.

Also, for future SATV users, good to buy a WIFI keyboard to pair it up. I'm using Logitech K830. Logitech Illuminated Living-Room Wireless Keyboard K830 and Touchpad for Internet-Connected TVs (Unifying and Bluetooth) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZOPVSKW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_eqpwwb1WTA2AB

Bro Tiktotape, I have varying experiences with Kodi on different devices.
Raspberry pi: no audio issues. Except slow performance cause of hw specs.
Mibox mini: audio stuttering on pass through but lag free user experience.
Since shield is android tv, and mibox also, I hope the stuttering issue is fixed Liao.

So far I got no issues with Kodi in Nvidia SATV aside from lack of audio codec support in Kodi. The next version of Kodi for SATV will support HD audio codec except Atmos iirc.

Kodi works differently in various Andriod media devices so it is very dependent on hardware manufacturer, so long they can push out the support, just wait for Kodi to get it through. Timeline vary again.

Offer is live at USD$149.99 now for the Shield and Remote.

During final checkout, the order will be broken into 2 orders and one will be eligible for free worldwide shipping while the other will not.
Just choose free worldwide shipping for the order that is eligible and pay extra shipping charges for the other which is not eligible.
Place your order.

After placing your order, talk to Amazon customer service and ask them to check why you were charged shipping even though individual items are eligible for free worldwide shipping.
CS will then proceed to waive the shipping charges.  ;)

i was charged 219.92 USD for the bundle. the remote was charged 49.96 USD. 169.96 USD for the shield.
so i used online chat, wasn't useful, couldn't solve my issue. called in and spoke over 30 minutes to solve it.
managed to reduce to 169.95 but refunding amount was incorrect, refund me back $19+USD. told her wrong and she went to clarify again. Gotten 149.99 USD in the end. phew, so much effort for explaining.

Or can I connect direct using M1/Singtel/Starhub fibre network?

VPN is required. For my case, I'm using M1 plus Smart DNS. My DNS addresses are inputted into Asus AC87, all I need to do is activate the DNS via Smart DNS webpage.

Just checking what is the version of the kodi app u guys are using? I m currently playing with my bro in law unit at home. The stable 15.2 isengard version seems to have issue getting 1080p 24 fps to play correctly for some of my mkv. Gonna try the Jarvis beta version later to see if it will resolve this framerate issue.

Ok looks like I will be answering my own problems and guess what I've managed to get everything working now - i.e. playing 1080p at 24fps - (now smooth as butter w/o any stutterint) and as a bonus, I also managed to get Dolby Atmos working on the nVidia Shield TV 4K as well. No more waiting for ver 17 and all that sort...This is now THE BEST media player in town.
I also managed to get NFS working for streaming high bitrate files like (m2ts with HD lossless audio - Dolby TrueHD and DTSHD-MSTR)...

Btw I'm referring to the use of Kodi here...

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

For those interested to give it a shot...follow the steps below:

Getting Dolby Atmos/Dolby TrueHD & DTS HD MSTR to work on your nVidia Shield TV 4K

1) Uninstall any version of Kodi that you have - assuming you are using the official ver 15.2 Isengard (Stable).

2) Install ES file Explorer or any other file browser onto your nVidia Shield TV 4K if you haven't already done so. This is required so as to allow you to do sideloading via ADB. (Make sure you allow for Unknown apk source file to be installed - this should be a familiar step for Android users. In the event that you dun see this setting, that is because you did not go to the settings to click (repeatedly) on the build ver...just hit a couple of times to get the "hidden developer" settings to appear in the settings menu.

3) Next go and download this "nightly build with bitstream passthrough enabled" from here: http://mirrors.xbmc.org/test-builds/android/arm/kodi-20151229-0fee423-adddroidPT-armeabi-v7a.apk (http://mirrors.xbmc.org/test-builds/android/arm/kodi-20151229-0fee423-adddroidPT-armeabi-v7a.apk) (save the apk file to the sd card or cloud drive)

4) Run the installer on the nVidia Shield TV 4K as per normal.

5) Next fire up Kodi and go into the Settings and change to Expert level. Look for audio section to ensure that you enabled "passthrough" and check all the 4 HD lossless audio codecs.

i) AC3
ii) E-AC3
iii) DTS
iv) DTS-HD
v) TrueHD

Play a file with Dolby Atmos and to my surprise, it works like a charm...even Roger Waters The Wall concert mkv file also worked!!! So you get both Dolby Atmos playback on m2ts as well as mkv. Something Oppo player (at present) can't do while PCH and AC Ryan can but at a very slow navigation pace.

Sadly, this ain't my player...it belonged to my bro-in-law and he wanted me to sell for him. I think with this new development, I'm gonna order one for myself and maybe just maybe...its time for me to retire my good old PCH-410 media player for good.

Getting 1080p/24 to work at the correct framerate

For those having issue with the 1080p 24fps playback, the abovementioned version will work for you. The trick here is to ensure that u put a 0.5s delay in the display sync in the setting for Video playback. This will trigger framerate to work in sync with the display and the content - i.e. mkv ripped in 1080p/24 and switched to 1080p/60 when navigating the GUI of the nVidia Shield TV 4K. The latter is important as you may wanna play some Android games or watch Youtube clips in higher framerate.

There you have it...Enjoy!

Right now, only BDMV file structure works...but cinavia maybe an issue here.

I think some of us have mistaken the BD ISO playback here...we're talking about BD ISO with full menu - which utilise BD-J (Java) Profile 2.0 which most BD menu interactivity is using. Based on some of my reading in the Kodi development community, only some titles are doing ok...not all. Hence it is still very much a WIP.

When you select BD ISO file, the player offer three options for you. Play main movie (which is no problem), lite menu, and forgotten the last one. The last two I think is not working.

Yes, the X4200W is the latest model which was purchased like 2 months ago. It definitely should support 4K as it has HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2.

It could be the HDMI input on the TV as not all ports support HDCP 2.2.  Will try it out later.

It seems that the updates is not release to the public...from the forum discussion, it merely states some form of "location bug" fix.

By default, Nvidia SATV does not support Hulu Plus. You need to sideload version 1.2.1 upon updating your SATV to the latest 3.0 OS. (http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/hulu/hulu-plus-for-android-tv/hulu-plus-for-android-tv-1-2-1-release/hulu-plus-android-tv-1-2-1-android-apk-download/)

It works for me, have fun!

Hi all,

Can I check with you guys whether this player can send audio output through its USB port to an external DAC without 3rd party USB apps? I'm looking for a player to handle video and audio files on my Synology NAS, sending audio signal to my DAC.

I have other android TV box but it needs USB Audio Player Pro to be able to do so.

Thanks.

The player's USB connections are meant for USB thumb drive/portable hdd, USB keyboard and mouse etc. It is not a multi-source player like Popcornhour (PCH) with digital output, which allows you to output audio to external DAC.

It is a strict and clean HDMI android player.

My bad, just checked Nvidia FAQ. It can output audio via USB.

https://shield.nvidia.com/support/nvidia-android-tv/faq/1

"SHIELD supports 7.1 and 5.1 surround sound pass through over HDMI. It also supports high-res audio playback up to 24-bit/192 kHz over HDMI and USB and high-res audio upsample to 24-bit/192 hHz over USB. On SHIELD controller, the 3.5 mm headphone jack supports a mic and stereo headphone combo."

Phil

You definitely need HDCP 2.2 for 4k video output via SATV.  I connected the HDMI cable to a non-HDCP HDMI port on my LG TV and was not able to output 4K video.

I'm asking because 4K Netflix can be played back on some earlier gen 4K TVs too.

Yes, you need HDCP 2.2 to decode the Netflix 4k signals if not it will be 1080p signals. Some 1st Gen 4k Tv can play back because they are manufactured after Feb 2013(HDCP 2.2 could have been injected), best to check your JVC manufacturer manual to confirm.

Phil

HDCP 2.2 is a DRM introduced to 4K content...there is a period when 4K content (unprotected source) been rolled out for a period of time when the ratification of the HDCP 2.2. has not completed. But that's in the past, now ALL 4K content, be streaming (e.g. Netflix) or 4K UHD bluray will require HDCP 2.2 to work. But having said that, there was a misnomer to back in the early 2012 - 2013 period when HDMI 2.0 is a requirement for 4K (that is true, u need HDMI 2.0 to playback 4K content as it requires higher bandwidth). Hence many are confused when they bought a so-called 4K TV with HDMI 2.0 specs (let's not go into whether its 10/18gbps lest make it more confusing), some have been misled that it will work when 4K content released in due course. Hence the confusion...Remember, both HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 requires an upgrade in hardware components...software upgrade via firmware won't work UNLESS of course the make and model of the 4K TV already have the hardware to support HDCP 2.2 upgrade...but AFAIK, not many TV manufacturers would do that. Even if the so-called sales guy from Courts, Best Denki or HN told you that it the manufacturer will release a firmware patch in due course to "activate" the HDCP 2.2 for 4K playback...chances are, it won't work...this is especially so if you bought the TV before 2014.

Hopefully this clears up the air...

Anyone managed to get audio working both HDMI & USB simultaneously?

Individually I am able to get either HDMI or USB (via Turtle Beach USB to SPDIF) working.  Just not both.

Objective - when I play YouTube to listen just music , I want to playback via USB audio into my Stereo amp only.

When I use Netflix and Kodi, I want to watch shows and movies in 5.1 or more via HDMI into my Denon AVR X5200W.

Help help

For the longest time, I have been looking for ways to have 2 "working" versions of Kodi on my nVidia Shield 4K TV...Well, I managed to find a way. I recommend this version of the Kodi styled, "Semper Media Center" or SPMC for short.

Compared to the original Kodi, this is much faster and yes, able to do bitstream passthrough for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X playback as well. It is currently utilizing the latest Kodi Jarvis 16.0 firmware. The developer is actually from Kodi team but he decides to do some mods of his own to push the envelope. For instance, the annoying issue with the original Kodi s/w which show the USB hard drive in a gibberish (machine name) have been resolved by using SPMC. It boots faster too!

So if you are like me who wishes to have 2 versions of Kodi installed...one with the latest built and the other one for playback of some clips which posed some "playback" issues perhaps...then SPMC is the one for you.

Here's the link to download: http://spmc.semperpax.com/

Cheers!~

I realize the remote is sold separetely. I wonder whether we can use the game pad or a wireless keyboard to do the selection? I presume this is more design for gaming hence why the game pad instead of remote is bundle?

What version are you using? the latest Jarvis 16.0? By the way, make sure you did not enable 8 channel DTS-HD support. Just enable passthrough.

Just to add further, for ALL stable Kodi versions released in their website, none of them will feature full HD bitstream passthrough which will allow for DTSX and Dolby Atmos to work. Maybe that's the reason why it won't do DTS-HD MSTR. I have been using Kodi using it Nightly build which will include all the HD bitstream passthrough hence I didn't realize that DTS-HD MSTR cannot passthrough.

Just tested Mockingjay part 2 and it does output Atmos soundtrack.  :) But strangely Transformers AOE is not decoded to Atmos. I am sure it's an Atmos soundtrack as I was able to output it via an HTPC when I tested it last year.

Just placed an order for another Shield TV to replace my HTPC in my living room. It's now my sole entertainment device. With MAME4DROID app, I can literally play hundreds  of arcade games like 194x, Street Fighter, Galaga...etc.

Very happy with this device.

Tested the XP Demo Disc 7 and some ATMOS mkv files yesterday with SPMC 16.3.  SPMC still needs a lot of work when it comes to ATMOS soundtrack playback.  Often I encountered buffering issues during playback from my NAS (DS1812) and quite often there are audio dropouts.  No issues with DTS-HD soundtracks though.

Just go ahead and buy if you guys need it. So far I have nothing much to complain vs the initial launch period, I left it idle for months before firmware updates come through with support of Kodi and SPMC. It also did well on Netflix 4k and Hulu Plus streaming, the 4k picture quality in former is nothing to shout though just slightly better than FHD, if I playback FHD material using Kodi/SPMC, it still rocks  ;D I enjoy pretty much on the 4k streaming in YouTube especially by GoPro on extreme sports  :P

That said, I need to try out HBO Go and Amazon Prime when time permits. Also, it is currently the most "powerful" spec media player.

Have been pondering whether to get one as currently using the VTEN, ATV4 as well as the old Dune Base 3.0 (Non-3D - Full BDmenu capable  ;D).

Decided to bite the bullet and ordered one with free remote to test and try out.

Any bro can advise of any apps that able to watch HK series in FHD?

Only way to justify another media player to the misses.  ;D

The official Nvidia remote has too few buttons.  Personally, I use a Logitech Harmony 600/300 to control the LG TV and Shield TV.  The Shield TV codes are available in Logitech's database.

Alternatively enable HDMI-CEC on the Shield TV and use the TV remote to control the Shield TV.

Only way to justify another media player to the misses.  ;D

Cheers

Interested to know too

Does anyone feel that the image is not as sharp on Nvidia shield? Not sure if it's my setting but seems like the image quality is not as good as popcorn.

It includes 16 GB of storage (expandable up to 128 GB), the SHIELD controller, the SHIELD remote, and an HDMI cable.

So i think should have the remote.

There are few options, the one with remote + controller is 249.98 for now.

Am not good at reviews. But will do a small comparison between the VTEN, dune and the nvidia TV.

However, eta for the Nvidea is 11 July.

However, had compared the VTEN with the dune.

VTEN with the latest firmware is able to turn off video processing.

I used my denon for this.

To me, the dune gives a more natural colors while the VTEN tend to more saturation.

Both with default video settings.

Thanks. Colors perhaps not an issue as can calibrate. Sharpness on it other hand might be more difficult to fix.

If you are using 4K TV, YouTube will be better because the native YouTube app in Nvidia SATV is 4K standard iirc.

In short, it does well in native 4K app like YouTube since there are 4K video clips available. As for Netflix, I can't speak the same in quality, I'm on 4K subscription, the quality at most is just on par to FHD.

It does well in 4K native clips with Kodi and really good in my opinion. Having said that, I do hope Kodi will improves on processing because Nvidia SATV is capable of more that.

In my case, I'm under utilizing it because at most I use it for Netflix, Hulu, YouTube etc nowadays partly because my HT is down temporarily.

My Shield TV was upgraded to 3.2 yesterday night.  The only thing I tested was the HDMI-CEC function to automatically switch off/on the TV/Receiver when I power on/off the device.

Also tested Youtube which now support 4k 60fps.  Samsung's UHD Transformers clips looks so pristine. Me like it.

Sigh, I was hoping that they will improve the way how the SATV's powering up. Meaning when power adaptor is turned on, it will not power up but rather turn on when instructed when using a controller or remote to do so.

No issue at all. Though they are improving, just not good enough for me haha... IIRC, at ver 3.0 then they included power down option in menu for shut down. I like device that can power on or off when instructed. Can use smart controller like Logitech harmony mah.

In your case, since you dont turn off the system, will do fine even if using Logitech Harmony.

If you talking about the Vten, there is a physical on/off switch at the back.

To fully shut down the vten without switching the back switch, you need to hold on the power button till the red light flashes, if not it will only go onto standby.

Actually whether it comes with on/off switch, does not matter, it is more of the question of whether when you turn it on, does it literally boot up or just went standby mode? I prefer the latter because I will only engage from remote when needed as I instructed.  ;D That's just me.. :P

Hmm. Have to wait for the Nvidia to arrive to see what mean.

For the vten, I leave the physical switch to on.

On weekends, I mealy just push (once) the on/off on the remote and it goes to standby. And when powering on again on the remote, it immediate power on to home screen.

During weekends where chances to watch HT is limited, will hold the power (remote) till it shut down.

Basically, like the sleep for the first case and shutdown for the latter.

Both without manually switching to off at the back of the vten

Kodi v17 krypton in its alpha state is avail for download... And yes, it does come with HD audio passthrough for dolby atmos this time. Unlike in the past where it is only available for nightly builds. This time round, the feature should be part of the main build release from now onwards.

JUst a follow-up to the latest Kodi v17 (Alpha). I have tested the HD lossless audio passthrough and it is able to decode Dolby Atmos with no issue. BUT there is serious playback issue with video. It will freeze and the audio continues to play. So in conclusion, this Alpha version is NOT MEANT FOR NORMAL USE just yet. Please refrain from installing it at this point. You've been warned.

For my Synology NAS, I save my video files in Video folder, music files in Music folder and ditto the rest. What do you mean by you have to move everything?

When you are in Kodi, the initial part will request you to locate the shared folder and you need to input your user id and password. Before you finished it, make sure you click and saved the location if I remember correctly.

When I setup my Synology originally, I copied everything to a shared folder and accessed it that folder from my ACRyan directly.  It was a mistake to copy that way but it was done before I realized it.  It shouldn't be an issue to move them, I just hesitant to move that amount of files if I don't need to.  Thx

It will still work la , I'm able to access my shared folder from Desktop as well using Kodi. Nothing wrong is that's your preference.

If you seriously consider to move them over, make sure you use the admin page's file browser to move them instead of drag and drop via desktop. The former will move under NAS's environment and it is much faster.

You can sort the files (Photos, Music & Video) up into respective shared folders and permission granted, as per bro tik mentioned.

Accessing the folders will need to be set up via the player.

Thanks, I still need to work out how the player can access the folders directly.  If I do the search in Kodi for NSF, it finds my shared folder but I can't find any files but it never asks for a userid and password like the ACRyan did when mapping a folder.  But moving the files over to the Video folder doesn't seem to be an issue through the Synology interface.  I may just do that and take it as a opportunity to decide what to keep and delete

I had the guest account disabled so just enabled it and opened up my "Shared" folder but still didn't work.  It never asks me to sign in and save the userid/password like the ACRyan would.  But I am fine just to move my files.  A few quirks I can't quiet figure out but maybe try to resolve one at a time.  I set the player to to Passthrough Audio and when I am in Kodi, I have it set to do 7.1 Audio.  If I play a MKV file with DTS-HDMA.5.1 audio, my receiver is showing Multi-channel in and not showing HDMA like the ACRyan would. When I bring up the settings while the film is playing, I can see Audio Pass-through is enabled but my receiver is not seeing it as DST HDMA.

I have only done te basic install of Kodi, are there other Add-ins to install?

I am not sure why they have to make it this difficult but will try some more research.  Won't have a chance to do anything tomorrow though

I am likely to get an Oppo 103D as my only disc player (for both blu-ray and music CDs), but as most of my video content is on my NAS, I'll probably be mostly streaming local content. I mainly watch movies or TV series from MKV files, and don't really watch that much Youtube, and currently have no plans to subscribe to Netflix.

Am posting my question here (instead of the Oppo thread) cos I am curious - what are the benefits of having the Nvidia SATV to stream local video content, over the Oppo? I understand a better UI is one clear benefit (not sure if that alone is worth the additional USD200) - are there other clear benefits?

Thanks a lot for sharing your views!

If you use Oppo to playback atmos clips(mkv, mts2) straight to AVR via passthrough option. It will decode as multi-channels instead of Atmos. If you are using JB Oppo, your files hosted in NAS are ISO/BDMV format, it should be fine, I have sold my JB 105D so I can't confirm further.

One of the benefit in Nvidia SATV is 4k ready, you will be able to playback 4k clips if it is available in softcopy. Assuming you have 4k ready AVR and TV as well.

Thanks Tiktokape! That's exactly the information I was hoping to find out! Now considering if I should just get the Nvidia only and just rip the discs into the NAS

May I ask why you decided to sell the 105D?

My AVR is the denon x7200w. No HDMI 2.0 no HDCP2.2. I'd suppose that it won't play 4k content even if it's an MKV file, unless I take the upgrade...

Within 2 years, I owned 103D(JB), followed by 105D(JB) and now using 101Ci(modded) for disc playback in anticipation of 4k BRP. Concurrently, I was using Dune B1 & PCH A400 and now using Nvidia SATV for my ripped video clips.

With modded 101Ci, it does have better picture quality than my previously owned 103D/105D. Of cause, music playback is much better against 103D/105D, well, yard stick applies to each own. ;D I find the simple the player, the better in quality it performs. :)

I'm using Denon 7200WA and Panny 4k TV so I'm just waiting patiently for 4k materials to flow through well ;) Meanwhile, buying a few 4k BRs when price is decent at my discrete level.

Not entirely correct. You CAN still playback 4K content, especially so-called 4K mkv rips (2160p) as long as the DRM has been stripped. This applies to 4K content like 4K demo clips (w/o DRM). But for TRUE 4K content like Ultra 4K UHD bluray, HDCP 2.2 is a must to bypass the DRM so you can get the 4K image to play on your display. One way to overcome this is to purchase a 4K bluray player (when it becomes available locally) and connect the video (HDMI output) with HDCP 2.2 directly to your 4K displayer while the other HDMI output goes to your X7200W for audio playback only (I believed DRM doesn't affect the soundmix).

When I bring up the settings while the film is playing, I can see Audio Pass-through is enabled but my receiver is not seeing it as DST HDMA

I have only done te basic install of Kodi, are there other Add-ins to install?

First and foremost, what sharing protocol are you using on your shared folder that houses those movie files? Is it NFS or SMB? I recommend NFS and ensure that you go to the NFS permission setting and "create a new NFS rule". Input the IP address as "192.168.1.* and click <Ok>.

As for playback of DTS-HD MSTR track, follow the steps given by Tiktokape.

I am using NSF.  When I search on the Shield, it finds it no problem but then I can't seem to find any files.  But when you say "create a new NSF rule" do you mean on the Synology?  I didn't get a chance to look today but never saw an "Expert mode"  I tried every menu on either the player or within Kodi but can't seem to get it to pass through HDMA.  It always comes through as multi-channel input on the receiver even when I have passthrough set.

I'll try to research more tomorrow

Yes... The rule is to be set within the NAS. As for the 'expert mode', u must highlight the 'standard mode' radio button/tab and hit the enter button on your remote twice to cycle through the modes from 'Standard >Advanced>Expert'. Once the 'expert mode' is engaged, ensure the speakers setting with 7.1 is selected. And scroll down to enable audio passthrough and checked on all avail check boxes.

The settings are there... U just simply didn't get it right. U need to explore more thoroughly.

Thanks for your help, now have time to try to work it out.  Will leave NSF out for the moment and just use DLNA.  I now understand would you mean on the setting levels and have changed it to advanced.  When I go to Audio Output it looks like this:

If I choose a file with DTS HDMA, my receiver reads it as DTS Surround but not as HDMA.  Does anything look wrong in the settings?

Try using SPMC instead of Kodi for movies with HD audio. You will see the additional options to pass through HD Audio streams.

+1...try spmc instead. Go through the same steps to invoke the advanced/expert mode. U will see more options like e-ac3, dts hd ma and dolby truehd. Enable all to get hd lossless audio working. I have already mentioned it in the threads posted by Tiktokape. U need to read up...it will save u alot of time.

For NFS, u should not just use DLNA mode as the latter have too many restrictions in terms of what media codecs is allowed. Why restrict yourself? Explore further dun just give up so easily.

Yes, I am testing with a few MKV files that are HDMA audio.  even if I bring up the Now Playing menu, it says 1080  dts-HD Master Audio  5.1

The receiver is a Denon x6200 and the speaker setup is 7.1.4

I tried to un-install Kodi and reinstall it but still get the same results.  Kodi version is  Build 16.1

It's there a reason why NFS is used instead of Samba?

I've used Samba so far no issues with my other media players.

My Nvidea only coming next week so will test out.

NFS is a much more efficient protocol as compared to SMB/Samba. You will see the benefits when playing back high bitrate videos especially 3d/bluray iso files.

When I was using samba to playback Full HD videos on my raspberry pi which only has a 100mb ethernet, the video will stop and go. Lots of issues. After configuring NFS to stream the videos, these issues disappeared.

If you do not face and issues with samba, there is no real need to switch to NFS.

Solved the NSF issue which solved the playing from the BMVD folder.  Can't test Atmos yet as I don't have an Atmos file but I think I am almost there!

I don't mind it is lite menu or not, just as long as I can play is good for me

For local LAN, since enclosed network, always make sense to deploy NFS since it is fast and at the same time less CPU intensive on the server especially you are dealing with large file size video clips. SMB is more secure but slower in put through as a result.

The main selling point of SATV is a gaming console. Which is why it is bundled with game controller as default, however as it goes since launched, it has been tweaked with demand on what the buyer prefers hence the player with game controller, or with remote, or with both game controller & remote, two game controller etc.

For those simple apps meant for Nvidia SATV, it is simple and straight forward so the remote will do decently. For Kodi, which offer more control features, the remote lag pretty behind on the offerings.

Just stick to the GAME CONTROLLER will do.

Couple of questions again.

Can SATV play UHD ripped ISOs and 4k Mkvs? Do I need a 4K AVR to feed video and audio too? I see if I can join the fun with a 4k TV and SATV to start off. Not looking to spend on AVR or UHD player for the moment. ;D

Yes, with SATV, you can playback 4K mkv encoded in HEVC H.265 codec...but no, you can't playback UHD ISO as there is no ripping s/w capable of doing a 1:1 copy of the UHD disc, even if there is, you will need a AVR with HDCP2.2 - i.e. you need to get a "new" AVR that is 4K compatible to watch.

Note: I assume intend to get a 4K UHD Tv at the very least...

Not sure if it's my arse luck but my SATV is crippled and functionally unusable after applying the damm controller firmware update back on Monday.  Every few seconds it will prompt a Wireless Controller Not Found dialog box even though I have the controller connected with a USB cable.  Reported the matter to Nvidia support already and they are deliberating if it's faulty hardware.  Not sure if they willing to ship replacement unit to me in Singapore.  Sibeh Sianz..  Thankfully I got all the necessary apps installed on my E6 so it's not so painful right now.

Just got me Nvidia TV delivered last night.

Just 2 queries regarding some aspect of the player
1) Netflix - from my LG TV app, certain shows like House of Cards shows 4K. However, in the SATV it show HD only.
2) Games - Any bro tried games from Nvidia hub? Audio in games only 2 channels? No 5.2 at least?

Thanks.

Cheers. Will check.

Edit: Just checked the manual.

My LG930T has 4 HDMI ports.

1 (HDCP2.2)
2 (ARC)
3 (10Bit)
4 (MHL)

Know that 2 and 4 is out

At the moment, my AVR connected via HDMI 3 as per manual statingfor YcbCr 4:4:4 of 4K @50/60 Hz.

Will try HDMI 1 and see how.

I have the LG UB950.  You have to use the HDMI port with HDCP 2.2.  If not, you cannot get 4K output from Netflix.

How do I enable Netflix 4K Ultra HD on SHIELD Android TV?
Answer ID 3706   |    Published 07/28/2015 03:20 PM   |    Updated 07/28/2015 03:22 PM
How do I enable Netflix 4K Ultra HD on SHIELD Android TV?
Requirements:

1)     A 4K Ultra HD TV with at least one HDMI port that supports HDCP 2.2.
2)     A Netflix plan that supports streaming in Ultra HD
3)     Internet connection with at least 10 Mbps download speed (Netflix recommends 25 Mbps).

Steps:

1)     Ensure that you have the latest SHIELD Software Upgrade installed. Go to Settings > Device > About > System Update.
2)     Confirm that your HDMI cable is plugged into an HDMI port that supports HDCP 2.2 on your 4K TV. Most 4K TVs have at least one HDCP 2.2 compatible HDMI port. HDCP 2.2 is required for Netflix 4K.
3)     Check your Netflix plan to ensure that it supports streaming in Ultra HD. You can check which plan you're currently on at www.netflix.com/ChangePlan.

No need, you can cancel it before 30 days free trial. Read the fine lines carefully. I'm on Prime for US. As for Uk, I cancel recently so I cant really test out the free trial.

The Nvidia SATV from Uk, is almost closed to what Amazon US is offering during Black Friday. Worth the hoot.

I find the price is very good opposed to what I paid when released though I get a head start to it. Further, things like app support started to get better post 3-4 months. Can you imagine it sitting at my home doing nothing haha

The only advantage I get to use it efficiently is calibrate my Panny 4k TV using the supported android app to run my calibration patterns by CalMAN via SATV instead of playback the patterns via BRP. My Panny is showing me good results.

But if you want to ensure that you always get the latest (most up-to-date version). Visit here: http://spmc.semperpax.com/ (http://spmc.semperpax.com/)

The latest version is 16.4.2...but the Google Playstore is at 16.4.1 (as of last night).

Dear bros, does it matter if the unit is from USA, or from the UK? Are there region restrictions like for blurays, or difference in the apps available?
And lastly, got korean dramas via the Shield TV or not?

Thanks for answering my questions :)

Bro e24djenggos, I am watching Netflix via the E6T Oled, works very smoothly even though it's via wifi. But when I put my AVR to direct mode, I see that the input is a 2.0 signal (even with the 4K shows). That's why thinking of getting the shield TV

did you switch your TV's audio mode? For sony TVs, i have to switch speaker system option from speakers to audio system before the output toggles to 5.1.

I got this for atmos, as far as I'm aware it's currently the only one via SPMC (aka kodi) to play atmos (from files or online), for 4k TV dun need to be smart only 4k. I use Amazon prime which yet is not supported on NVS but I also have FireTV 4K and NVS more powerful

Never heard that there is a difference, I'd say no, I was watching prime sales on Amazon for both and ended with US for better deal. Also re apps all via google store and that is determined by your google account. As an ang-moh I dun fancy Korean dramas (also no Brazilian ones) but there are sources which you can add in SPMC and they should be available as many more is available

I have a Sony 4k I think X85b or something like that, I have it on audio system so everything comes through AV receiver, depending on your receiver settings it should capture the source audio signal, mine works with no probs. I have the Denon X2200, when your Sony is on speakers it will use the TV speakers which can't play 5.1

Bro cd_sg, thanks for the info!
Bro congsterz, i switch to audio output via avr, using the ARC. It is output in PCM. On avr i selected dolby surround which sounds very good, but in direct mode i see that the source is only 2.0

Seems like the main hardware difference is the game controller design.  Existing owners will get the same features via a firmware update later this month.

While most of us will agree with me that nVidia Shield 4K TV is the best bag for bucks when it comes to media playback like MKV and streaming apps like Netflix etc.

Some limitations that you need to know...
Do take note that even until now, Netflix app on nVidia Shield 4K TV still unable to support Dolby Atmos and the YouTube app also unable to support HDR due to the difference VP9 Profile level.

New firmware 7.2.3 available for update. Added the latest Kodi update which adds customizable home screen channels. Apart from that, nothing much to report.

The Shield remote controller also get a firmware upgrade to ver 1.41.

This mediabox works like a true champ...Can play all formats and also iso too!

Connectivity to my Synology was a breeze too.

when you say it can play ISO files, do you mean DVD ISO files or BD and UHD ISO files with full menu navigation capability like what other players like egreat can do?

Another neat feature of nVidia Shield TV 4K is the ability to read MaxCLL and MaxFALL on 4K HDR rip in MKV format and this is very very crucial for 4K display. No other media player like Zidoo or Egreat does that.

SATV cant play BDMV folder which is non-issue as I can just play the index file will do...No full BD/DVD/UHD Menu is non issue for me too.

May I ask what is offered in eGreat and zidoo that SATV doesn't have? (besides full BD Menu)

Thinking of getting the Shield TV & weighing 2 buying options:
1) via Qoo for ard S$280. Some customers reviews seem to indicate the set comes with SG 3 pins power adapter.
2) via US Amazon for USD190 (abt S$260) b4 shipping. Total costs will probably be abt same as via Qoo.

Like to check w bro who gotten their sets fr US....fr pics I saw seems like the power adapter is the “brick” type. Is the adapter universal voltage and if so, since it is the brick type can I simply swop the power cable portion with a 2 or 3 pins kind & reuse the actual adapter or is the power cable fixed to the adapter?

Finally other than the abv 2 buying options, anyone with cheaper lobangs ;)?

Not a brick type of power cable. Get the 2017 version with a much smaller footprint.

There are some limitations with shield. No DV or atmos support for Netflix, no hdr support for YouTube. You might want to consider chrome cast ultra or Apple TV 4K but check to see what they support first.

Yes it does...at least for Kodi. Did not try SPMC though as Kodi ver 18.1 onwards already way better than the Kodi fork, SPMC.
