It's all over man...

I thought in some forums, they have a neat trick where newbies can only post in the newbie forum and introduce themselves. And that's one way of vetting the bad eggs. Not a bad idea. This way they don't spam the forum from day one.

Like now.

But you cant get rid of pete's supermen tho :)

There is a chap bumping up his thread - actually TWO threads of the same item, HOURLY....
I always wondered if there is an inverse correlation of speed of sale or quality of the item to the number of bumps per day...

Running a web server is fraught with issues...the forum is running essentially as an add on to the web server, The problem is sometimes its hard to keep up with the contstantly changing exploits to the setups that we run.

Flaws and cracks are found all the time in the server and add on software modules. Sometimes these are published and other times not...if one is found and not published then there is always a risk that it can be used to a hackers advantage...but more typically they like to brag and word gets out about the flaw and it gets fixed.

Having a fix is great but it might get missed by those running the flawed software...and not corrected until a bigger update or version change.

Groups like anonymous take advantage of these kinds of flaws and exploit them to thier desired effect. The spam we get here is often the result of some "script kiddies" probably honing their skills for bigger and badder things.

System admin is not easy...sometimes a fix can break other things, so as with other things the cure might be worse than the disease until such a point comes that a combination of updates will work together.

We will strive our best to "contain" the spread. So please do report to us should you encounter any more spambot postings from time to time. As only myself and queks are "eliminating" the spambot postings only...so do expect some "delay" in removal. We will do our best to keep the forum in a "sane" state.
Thanks!

Thanks for the hard work, desray. Really appreciate it.

You know, if you guys are swamped, you could always delegate the job of killing spammers to some of us.
I know some of us practically live on XP and will be happy to volunteer to keep the forums spammer-free.

There is some Russian syndicate that is spamming all forums, they use some software to find forums, then they actually manually register an account to start spamming. I know because I manage a forum for a client and we've received an increased amount of fake registration attempts recently, and they are usually from .ru accounts.

Patching won't help. The trick is to make it more difficult for them to register and to start new threads.
You can start by having an email verification system for registration, so they need to receive a verification email and click the link before they can login.
Then for posting, just set a minimum number of posts before they can start a new thread, maybe they need 10 posts before they can start a new thread.
The first should be available as a free plugin for SMF, the 2nd should already be a feature.

This won't stop everything, of course, but it makes it more troublesome for them to spam.

What you mention here had been implemented many years back. It still does not stop spam from robot. There are many ways to spam and usually all these are done by spam software.

Don't think it's implemented, I still see spammers with only 1 post count being able to start new threads.

Actually what is the purpose they spam the forum just with some meaningless sentense and no url redirect to other website?

Queks,

Why not prohibit members with less than 100posts from starting a new thread?
Title: Re: Why are we allowing these spammers?
Post by: desray on January 12, 2017, 07:25
Agreed with Jag, of late there has been a sudden surge in spambots hailing mostly from Russia and even China. This is getting out of hand...almost everyday we have spam attacks despite the forum s/w upgrades etc. If we can't do it at software level, human intervention in the form of "lock down" on certain key features such as limiting creation of post or even at pre-registration stage should be "strengthened". You may need to spend some time to read the SMF community forum to see if there is any form of resolution to this teething problem which only surface in the last couple of months.

Good idea, maybe 50 is enough, as most spambots are brand new members..
